Uhm, I forgot something ... As for the choice of Grimm for the mission, I can't argue about Danny's choice; but we can't just don't consider masks, banmdages and the usual comics/movie paraphernalia bacause they are "not real". What's not real "for real" is the Grimm character, because a skull without eyeballs and lips can't see and talk. I have no problem to accept Grimm, I find him one of the most cool heroes in the HR Universe, but I want the same "suspension of disbelieveing" that permit me to accept such character (or Turkish, Danny, Euro, Chance, Mxy, Priest and basically all the others) functioning for as many details as we need for the stories.

Obviously that's impossible. He will leave it in La Perdita, and then he will find that he can't stay separate from her.
Guess what, Euro, that's called addressing the issue. Good job. That's what I'm talking about. Doing it either in story or in the talk thread (which is the reason they were started, right?) is a good way to get things out of the way.
quote: Still posted by The Eurostar: And also that it was not NOW the moment to bring out the fact about passport.
It was something they had delved with when they began advertising their venture. You can't go on the market saying "we are the best at challenging the unknow" if you haven't provided to basic need like false identities.
Kit was new for this kind of work? Sure.
But Kristogar Velo was not. Sonja Ljzavet the same. They both had spy background.
But what of the new guys? When were they given these false papers? No one knows of Dirk's former involvement with the government because he hasn't told them nor his possesing of a passport already. Who came up with the idea to get them documents since Velo and Sonja are no longer around? Who had the connections to get them? These are little things that help build a world that seems as though these people could actually be living in it. quote: More from the Italian Stallion: As for the choice of Grimm for the mission, I can't argue about Danny's choice; but we can't just don't consider masks, banmdages and the usual comics/movie paraphernalia bacause they are "not real". Gee, I guess this would also be considered addressing the issue. Know what, Euro, knowingly or not you just helped demonstrate my point for me. I threw out something. You came along and replied to it. This is something that this group has been missing for a long time. For a while there, the Tuesday night chats helped with these sort of things. But now, some won't participate in them at all; or when the story is brought up, the room degenerates into nothing but quick on liners and the story is ignored. Maybe we need to start communicating more just like what has happened in the last couple of days. Maybe it wasn't the friendliest of conversations, but it got people talking and thinking. So, I feel that I have done my job. quote: The final bit from The Eurostar: You see, the team existed before Dirk Bell just entered the door without anyone objecting...
You know what? That's always bugged the hell out of me too. No one ever brought up the fact that a "gun maniac" (as some of you have refered to the character) and a skull-faced punker were just welcomed into the group with open arms and no questions. Now that's just plain silly.

Actually, doctor, I brought it up in the talk threads at least a couple of times. Anyways, they're in Italy now. If you don't like the way I handled the situation, too bad, you all had time to come up with something else. Now on with the story! quote: Posted by Prof. Sardella: As for the choice of Grimm for the mission . . .What's not real "for real" is the Grimm character, because a skull without eyeballs and lips can't see and talk.
I have no problem to accept Grimm, I find him one of the most cool heroes in the HR Universe. . .
I'm glad you like the character. It does mean a lot to me that people seem to enjoy him, if not fully understand him. I AM addressing the issue of him functioning without eyes and lips in the story, only in subtle ways. Just because he looks human, doesn't necessarily mean he still is human, or functions with human senses. ![[wink]](images/icons/wink.gif)

You know what? I did bring that up, both in the story (though in a limited sense, since Pete took little notice of such things, and Chance came in shortly afterwards) and in the talk thread and chats. It makes absolutely no sense. And I still have no idea why Dirk Bell or Grimm are with the group in the first place. You seem very quick to point out others' faults but you haven't addressed your own.

The only thing about your writing I've been able to notice is your tendency to throw stuff out there without explaining it and then disappear again, only to show up in the talk threads complaining that your idea is not being written correctly.
That's bullshit, Grimm. I've written enough in the past three years of stories for anyone to get a sense of my writing style(s), and the archives are there at the Yahoo Groups to read (and I know you've read some of them).
I've also participated in every story since Pete was first introduced. I don't write as often as the busier members here, but I have written my share.
As far as the last story goes (issue 10) -- I really should have had my character Chance leave the island before the story started, as I've had little time the last few months to do any writing due to schoolwork, and the story them didn't interest me anyways. But the character was in the story already near the beginning, and I couldn't pull him out of it without everyone making a big fuss about it or making Chance look like a coward or something.

Actually, I have given small hints about why Dirk is in the group throughout his presence here. It's something that will be revealed later on. When? I'm not so sure. That depends upon another writer on this board.
As far as letting Dirk in, since I was new, I didn't feel that I had a grasp of the other characters enough to write how they would react. I left it up to them. Yes, you and Danny did finally address the issue; but not until after Grimm had said something about it a few times in chats. It took the new guys saying, "Hey, are you guys just friggin' nuts to let our characters burst in like this? You know nothing about them." for that to happen though. Well, Mick freaked out big time... About Grimm mainly, but Turkish and Dirk gave him the creeps too. quote: Originally posted by thedoctor: or when the story is brought up, the room degenerates into nothing but quick on liners and the story is ignored.
Whoops.
Anyway... I'm going on vacation for two weeks (not for my own will), so obviously I won't be adding to the story. I'll PM someone (haven't decided who yet) with my plans for Mxy in this story, so that when I come back he isn't exactly where I left him, or isn't transformed into a japanese transvestite midget porn star.
See ya!

Well, anyways, I'm enjoying this story as much as I'm enjoying all this arguing... Seriously, while we disagree on a lot of things from time to time, people, I never take this kind of stuff personally. I think I've had my disagreements with just about all of you in the past (except for a couple of the newbies), but it's never something to hold a grudge over or get personal about. The bit with Danny being "Guido Sardella's" "adopted son" was a nice touch (heh), but Chance would more likely use his fake ID of salesman Paul Garrett (with dark hair and all) as he did in my solo thread rather than create yet another fake ID. Not a big problem, though. Perhaps in this instance he'd rather not compromise his Garrett identity and instead had a new one picked up in case the team got into some serious trouble with the law while on this mission.

Don't mind me. I'm just about the mundane business of character development. Not my fault if my subplot is more interesting than the main story thus far.

Today in my personal universe the doctors discovered that my father has not cancer but just a heart disorder, and at the same time in our shared universe everyone is friendly again.
Plus, yesterday rained as hell, while today the sun shines.
...what a wonderful world..
Hi guys, and especially The Doctor.
I am very pleased that talking it came out that more or less we have the same vision about the HR Universe.
The big problem, I think, is that we'll never have time to dig every detail. For example, when you say that Dirk Bell was easily accepted, I can agree. But it was shown when he and Grimm were formally "hired", or associated, to the team. I suppose shortly thereafter (which could means after the end of the hurricane story, because since Grimm's arrival only three days, I believe, passed before the end of the last storyline) they both could have been given false identites and other stuff I now I can't come up with, by a routine started by Velo or/and Ljzavet and continued even after they departed.
After the hurricane there have been an undetermined amount of time (which vary from the "months" referred by Grimm and the weeks that were not enough to hail Danny's ribs), where I believe paper works, even in the problematic days of the reconstructions, had to be made.
But if is important to show the admission of a member in the team, we could create a sort of admission test, and do it in the stories, at the end of the issue where the character first appear.
Obviously, that means we can't, like we did until yesterday, to any newbye that want to join, "read the previous post and write yourself in". To create a more credible universe, everyone which want to join should read all the previous issue. That's something that cannot be proposed, obviously.
As for the "new" characters, I really love everyone. I preferred the first Phil, the shy one, but I am adapting to the new one. Grissom is great, and Grimm is "real" if you understand what I mean. Dirk is still not enough "alive" for me, still too much a stereotype, but I had not the time, yet, to read his solo story, a thing that I will rectify as soon as I will have the time and I am sure I will grasp him better. For Tayden I have a soft spot (Euro, in the old Universe, was a fallen angel, just before the final story), and Blackwulf, aside my difficult for reading his posts, was cool. Priest I had not read enough from Gooz to really understand him, and his admission in the MBL is still the single thing that most bug me in all the HR timeline/universe. Ameristar is a bit too powerful for my taste (I like Mxy because for how much he is powerful, he is also unpredictable). Lot of powers without serious drawback don't appeal to me. But I played with her in the solo story of the return of Euro, and I love her personality.
Lastly Turkish. I hate Turkish. He is too damn powerful. I see him as a cross between Doctor Fate and the Kway Chen Kane (sp) from the original Kung Fu serial. He talks to nature and change the course of hurricanes, makes the sun drops below the horizon at will (I'm making this up, I know). Aurochs sent toward him the ugliest denizens of Hell, and he dissipated them like a breeezes. There's no way to stop him (well, there are millions way, but only in Pro's mind, nothing of what I can think would succeded in bring him down).
Have you read the above? It's all bullshit. The truth is that I hate Turkish because it "killed" the single character I really loved from the old Universe, the human Prometheus, the god who refuse godhood to be among the humans that he loved so much. Mithology at its essence. The best well rounded character ever to appear in the MBL/TOMB era. When he didn't return, revamped or altered or the same, in the HR universe, I felt like I lost a friend.

Good beginning for the trip, Grimm and Doctor! (I just had the time to read it now).
I hope to have the time to continue later this afternoon.

You've actually stumbled upon my character there, Euro. Yes, Dirk is a stereotype. That's intentional. The main difference between Dirk and the other stereotypes is that Dirk knows he's a stereotype. He does it deliberately. That's the fun of the character for me. I play off the action hero archetype and actually poke a little fun at it on occasion. A closer look at some of my posts will reveal that.

You're not the only one who has said that. The thing is that I never intended Phil to be that sort of person. I wanted to create someone who would continually defy expectations and break down heroic stereotypes. Phil is neither a hero nor an antihero, and you're never really sure if you like him. My goal is to dissolve the overextended black-and-white, good guy/bad guy distinctions we are so often trapped by in our writing. I have given a slightly different take on some of the characters here, but the purpose of that has always been to make them more human, more believable. You can make a character with as many inhuman traits as you want, but if the readers can't see some element of themselves in that character, then there's less of a sense of connection to the character, and that connection has always been one of the main characteristics of an enduring character.
I have heard many comments from people who say that they can't really understand Phil at all. That to me is a good thing, because there's a bit of everyone in Phil - and there's a bit of Phil in everyone. Don't be afraid to write with him because you don't understand every element of his personality. Phil is a very dynamic character, and if I were to make him more predictable or more "in the box", I would defeat my entire purpose for writing him in the first place.

Well said, Philsy! This is essentially the way I feel about Walker and the misunderstanding about his character that made me finally decide once and for all to make him a full-time supporting character. I've said something about this earlier, but, despite what I say, Walker will be an eternal "villain" to many of the posters on this board, no matter how many times I scream 'til I'm blue in the face or even try to prove otherwise in his character. Man is fallen and depraved. This is the basis of Walker's character. And, Phil, no matter how many times you try to make the distinction, unless Phil starts killing, persecuting, or undermining his teammates, he'll probably always be viewed as a hero/anti-hero by many on these boards. Not a fault of anyone, necessarily, but just an observation that I've made over the course of the creation of this new universe...
At any rate, I'm done now. Good work everyone. Keep it up.

Pro started this. Grimm and Sammitch followed it up. Now it's my turn. This is how I plan on writing the characters based on how I perceive them through my own mind's eye. Grimm: Big, street tough, and a down and out brawler. He's got size and strength and uses them both to his advantage. There is a golden heart underneath that undead body. He connects with some people more than others for various reasons. That said, he still prefers to keep things to himself. Maybe it's because of his former life as an enforcer. Maybe it's because he just doesn't feel like he truly fits in because he's dead. Mxy: A lot of power with little real understanding of how big of a deal it is. His power to manipulate reality is so natural that he thinks little more of it's effects on the world than we do a sneeze. He's connected to Mick's mind, and I see Mick as being very childlike in his demeanor. Therefore, Mxy is much more so. Though he does good with his powers, it mostly seems to be for his own amusement. Mick: As I said before, he is very childlike in my eyes. He's that guy you know who never really grew up. But he's slowly doing it. He's shown that he's mature enough to make a commitment, or is it really just that he thinks he's mature enough for matrimony? But the biggest example of his growth as an adult is Mxy. Without a sense of the moral codes of humans, Mxy relies on Mick to be his guide. Mick is now an older brother type character who tries to imbue Mxy with what it's like to be human and value life. And Mxy acts the little brother part by being annoying when not allowing Mick to have his body back and must be tricked to do so. Priest: Don't have much on him yet. So far, he's Bishop from X-Men. I, like Pro, don't like Bishop. So I'll probably mureder this character later on. Raptor: An original MBLer who longs for the old day. The team before him is not the one he knew, so he feels a little out of place. Being the guy he is, though, he easily accepts that things change and tries to go with the flow. He likes being a hero (maybe it has something to do with receiving the same rush he felt as an athelete during the Olympics) but yearns for a simpler life. I really do think that he'd give it all up for a chance to be a normal father to his son. Phil: Dirk sees too much of himself in Phil, so he doesn't trust the guy. I'm not too happy with the flip-flopping personality that Sammitch has given him so far, so I'll wind up giving him a little more solid foundation. Since he has no idea who he really is, I see Phil not wanting to give away what little he knows about himself. He's secretive, yet he slowly pulls out all these unpredictable things for the rest of the team to see (like the cars, for example). I see this as somewhat a childish game. He likes to confuse people and keep them off guard. It's all a ploy, and Phil is laughing to himself the whole time. Chance: Ripped from his own reality, Chance is stuck in a world that is almost a mirror opposite of his own. He no longer has the pull over the group that he did in his own world. Instead, he is constantly trying to find his place in this strange land where his true love is marrying another man. At times he's bitter. Others he gets depressed. But he is slowly building his life together here. The depression is less, and the bitterness is almost gone. But he will never accept this world as home. His mission in life is to restore the balance, bring Pete back to life, and return to his own world. Grissom: This guy is out to have a blast. He put his mercenary life behind him and started a security business. Though the money is good, it just doesn't fulfill his life. Even having girls constantly on his arm isn't enought to keep him happy (though it does destract him for a while). He needs the adventure. That's why he tossed himself into the MBL. His globe trotting days are far from over. He's Indian Jones meets Nightcrawler. Ameristar: She's a chick in armor. She likes to get in the middle of everything. Seems nice. That's all I've got so far. I don't plan on writing her much. Drax: He's new, so I don't have enough material to do anything yet. Tobias: Are you really planning on rejoining the team, or were you yanking our chain? Anyways, I need to go over some back issues to understand your character. I'll do that as soon as I have the chance.

From what Dirk has seen, there are few more accurate assessments that could be drawn. I have always appreciated the trouble you go through to develop an understanding of the various characters others have made. Phil is enigmatic, but only because he really isn't sure of exactly who or what he should be, and telling him to "just be himself" would obviously not be very helpful. But the truth is slowly coming out, and when we hear it, it'll be a shocker.
quote: Nugget of truth from my roomie: Man is fallen and depraved. This is the basis of Walker's character. And, Phil, no matter how many times you try to make the distinction, unless Phil starts killing, persecuting, or undermining his teammates, he'll probably always be viewed as a hero/anti-hero by many on these boards.
Good point. It always helps when you have frequent access to the person who helps you develop your characters! I think, though, that no matter how many confusing or disturbing things Phil does, everyone can see that he is trying to do the right thing, as best as he can tell what it is. And that's the essence of what it means to be human. We try and fail, but we keep trying. We fall, we get back up.
Even in Unidentified, when Phil did stuff that was pretty disturbing, he was always trying to find the right way to do things - except for that really dark period in the middle of the story when he was completely motivated by revenge. But in the long run, Phil's intentions have always been ultimately positive. He wants to become more than he is. And I think that's why everyone should be able to find something they like about Phil's character.
Good observations, everyone!

quote: Posted by Raptor: The truth is that I hate Turkish because it "killed" the single character I really loved from the old Universe, the human Prometheus, the god who refuse godhood to be among the humans that he loved so much. Mithology at its essence. The best well rounded character ever to appear in the MBL/TOMB era. When he didn't return, revamped or altered or the same, in the HR universe, I felt like I lost a friend.
I think Pro would be immensely flattered by this statement.
Euro, guys, I'll give you a little insight into the things that inspired Pro to come up with Turkish. Turkish has bits of Lei Mu Bai from Crouching Tiger, a little of Neo from Matrix (later Neo, near the end. This analogy starts to make sense if you think of the Scion character mentioned in Pro's interlude a while back as Morpheus.) a dose of Jedi Knights (Euro, if you're looking for ways Turkish could be beaten, watch the Jango Fett/Obi-Wan battle scene from Clone Wars) and a touch of Ambrose Chase from Planetary.
Having knowledge of what inspired the character and having the benefit of actually being able to talk with Pro and discuss it, I'm probably more comfortable with the notion than some of you.
Euro, glad to hear everything's ok. Nice handling of the Ameristar thing.

It made more sense than just writing Dirk's view. Most of those would have been only a sentence or two: "Doesn't like him. Smells funny. Doesn't like him. Looks funny. Doesn't like him. Period." Like that.
And you should know damn good and well that the "Weeelllll" is only to be followed by "you see, what happened was.....," or "it's like this....!" I thought you knew better.

Just reviewed my list and realized that I forgot somebody. Danny: Of all the MBLers, Danny is the only one Dirk respects. This is the guys isolated from his own time. Danny has to deal with a voice in his head that gets pretty annoying because Hal can't live his life the way he wants nor make Danny live it that way. Not wanting to be stuck in the 21st century forever, he refused to make connections to this time. I think he's come to grips with his abandonment in the past and is slowly, though he is most likely unaware of it, beginning to settle down in his new time. He's stepping up as a leader for the group. He's getting closer to his team mates. And he's beginning to get roped into a relationship by the opposite sex. As unwilling as he thinks he is to all these concepts, he's falling into every one.

Wow, this is so unspeakably cool...during my sabbatical, I've been working on a story called Jacob the Great that deals with this exact concept.

I guess "Bitch Fest 2003" aka "gettin it off our chest" brought on some good. The past few days of talk thread post have been some of the most insightful I've ever seen. Good job fellas.
I'm sorry I havent been contributing as much.....I haven't been inspired to write in the story.......I thought about haveg Tayden run in to teh guys who stole some of the weapons at the end of issue ten..and expanding Tayden's powers a bit..thats still an option.
I think while every one is in Italy though I am going to be writing using other peoples characters trying to get a feel for them. I try and do some fo that this weekend.
BTW......tell me what ya'll think of War is Hell...and feel free to post in it.

And I know that this is the mother of all delayed reactions, but... quote: Originally posted by Prometheus: K-VELO: You and I rarely have anything of use to say to each other. Glad to see you back to the writing, however. But, as you never write in the same stories at the same time with me, you only have a limited time before I come back, so, enjoy it.
Well, there was that one story where we were in HOBBES...before your character got killed and everybody else stopped writing... ![[no no no]](graemlins/nono.gif)

The Doctor, about your vision of Euro, it is exactly what I had in mind for him... due to some things I had to do, and with timing about some planned stories, it will be a little different, and that's why I brought in Ladnikia to scramble a too predictable future...
T5, yes, I was referring more to the armor than to the meta power of Jackie. If she can teleport only herself, that's something I don't consider a too big power. And about the armor, if it can be shown drained of powers, or malfunctioning after it has beaten up, I had no problem with that. As I said, maybe not too clearly, it's not the amount of power that bugs me, but the amount of power without drawbacks.
Grimm, I haven't seen the Episode 2, having a little child prevent me to go to the movies most of the time. Can you "resume" the battle you referred to?
And, lastly, yes, my father is out of immediate danger. The doctors now have to find what caused the damage and find an appropriate cure, but we are all relieved. Sadly, I don't know when I will have time to post (I am borrowing some minutes from my duty as a father, now). If my daughter will sleeep this morning, I will post in the story, if not, I will have to wait 12 hours or maybe even a day! [ 01-23-2003, 04:22 AM: Message edited by: The Eurostar ]

I'm not quite sure if drax has been made a member of the team yet. Will this mission serve as his test for membership?

It's a good idea, Drax. Feel free to continue from T5's post.

quote: Supposedly posted by thedoctor: Chance: Ripped from his own reality, Chance is stuck in a world that is almost a mirror opposite of his own.
Very astute, Doc. That's basically it in a nutshell. In practice Chance has become a more melancholy character than I originally intended, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.
He's also the kind of person who always has to be doing something. He doesn't go on vacations. Doesn't really relax. If he does take a leave of absence, it's a working holiday or something physically or mentally challenging (like climbing Mount Everest or writing a thesis on the properties of Polytetrafluoroethylene or something... he's a chemist). And due to his unnatural luck, he's bound to find some kind of interesting adventure along the way.
Part of the reason he always has to keep occupied is that, if he stops and dwells on personal things for too long, like he did at the New Year's Party, he starts thinking of everything and everyone he's lost -- his parents, his team, his world, his girl. He's only happy while on a mission or case, during which he truly comes alive.
Also, while in his own world he had quickly formed a leadership role in his team not long after their formation, owing somewhat to his having entirely funded the MBL there, he's only one of many newbies in this world's MBL. And while the Danny Hearn of his world wasn't interested in leadership, the Danny Hearn of this world has grown into the role very nicely -- something Chance can appreciate. Chance sees Danny as a younger brother who has tremendous leadership potential that just needs the right kind of support and loyalty in order to flourish -- and Chance is more than willing to help Danny grow into the leader this world's MBL needs.
(Plus, to use a Star Trek analogy, I've usually preferred my characters to play "Spock" or "Riker" to someone else's "Kirk" or "Picard" in the past as far as leadership goes. TTT made a good second-in-command but a very uneasy leader during the brief period he was leader of the MBL in the old universe. Leadership requires too much responsibility... ) [ 01-23-2003, 04:58 AM: Message edited by: TheTimeTrust ]

I should also add that one of the main reasons behind the creation of first Pete and then Chance (or vice versa as the case may be) was that I wanted to do something very different than The Time Tryst. Everything that could've been done with that android had been done by the time the old universe ended. As well, TTT was a great vehicle for character introspection and humour, but I constantly fell into the traps of writing story posts that were basically self-serving and building upon my own character's personal story rather than trying to add to the "group story," both in the MBL & TOMB stories.
Pete and then Chance were intended to be a departure from the introspective characters I'd written in the past which would force me to write posts featuring the whole team rather than posts spotlighting my own character.
Pete, for example, was the least "deep" character ever, at least on the surface. He was more of a happy-go-lucky guy which was fun to set against other people (such as Shirley who found him exasperating) but had no introspective life whatsoever... at least until after he "died", when he became a tragic figure... and subsequently took away all the charm he held for me. If I do end up using him again as a ghost, it'll be purely for humour value as he was meant to be.
Chance was intended to be nothing more than a story-book adventurer cut from the mold of Doc Savage or even (and I hesitate to say this) Indiana Jones... albeit with a somewhat "European" (or at least "non-American") touch with many talents and a sturdy confidence with no angst, unlike that of virtually every single Marvel Comics character, as Chance predates that tradition of heroism. In comic-book terms he'd be more like a golden-age hero (such as Captain America without the patriotism, as Pro put it) or a pre-Marvel Silver Age hero (like the early test pilot version of Hal Jordan).
However, I'd already set up a hitch in these plans when I did the switcheroo with Pete and Chance in the Castle of Crossed Destinies (which wasn't originally intended to be anything but temporary for that story only), as Chance swore his undying love to the Shirley of his own universe... That unwittingly set him up to be a tragic and somewhat melancholic character though it hadn't been my intention for him to be that way. It worked out for the best, though,
Unfortunately, after the first couple of stories with Pete, and especially since Chance took his place, I've ended up falling back into the old trap of focussing on my characters too much to the detriment of the rest of the story. I'm going to try to do less of that in the future, starting with the current issue...

Euro, I'm also glad to know your father's out of danger. I hope those doctors find out the cause of his ailments. I had a scare like that a few years ago myself when my father had a mild heart attack ![[eh... i dunno... ]](graemlins/ehidunno.gif) , but luckily he recovered from it. He's turning 70 years old this year, and he's still fairly active -- he continues to restore old rifles* as a hobby and has a shop outside of the town he lives in to work on them, and he was remarried a few years back with what seems to be a good marriage -- so I'm hoping his good health continues along with that. *Yeah, my father's very much a gun-nut. He just loves guns. In Canada, no less. Kinda ironic. [ 01-23-2003, 09:17 AM: Message edited by: TheTimeTrust ]
