One thing I thought I should point out about the PSI-Unit: Although they're all quite young, the Unit has been in existence for a while now, protecting La Perdita from any and all threats, mostly external ones. Of course, the island is a fairly peaceful one (or was, before the MBL got here... ), so it's somewhat true that they haven't really "gone public" all that much. But the public IS very well aware of their existence. They've been around longer than the Revolutionaries have been.
