It's a perfect exercise in how to first make a good point, and then undermine it totally by saying something stupid and ridiculous.

Case in point: He writes a sensible piece advocating Non-Violent Civil Disobedience for Palestinians, and points out how it would help both their cause and the general cause of peace in the region. Then he goes and suggests that the problems in Northern Ireland can be solved if a proportion of the Loyalist Protestant population converted to Catholicism!

Yes, duh, sure that would mean that a majority would reject British rule, but it's never, never going to happen. So, either he's trying to make a faceitious point about the Palestinian situation and suggesting that non violent protest there is as unlikely to happen as Loyalists converting to Catholicism (which unfortunatley, is probably true, but it's still more likely than the UVF hanging pictures of the Pope on their walls) or he's showing that he really doesn't understand the situation, and by doing so casts doubt on all his conclusions.

Ah, the Teabags thread. In an ever changing world (that we live in...makes you give in and...oh. Sorry.) it's nice to know that there are still some constants around. Even if it's constantly insane.

Haven't been here in a while, just thought I'd pop in and say hello. So hello!

IIRC, its ""Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pense"", a very threatening motto: ""You who think bad thoughts will get bad things."" I think Henry V said it when his court tittered over his gallant (read: sleazy) effort to replace the slipped garter of a woman with whom he was dancing. It led to the Order of the Garter, which is an honour still bestowed by the English monarch for gallant efforts.

Not too familiar with Moores work, but I've been meaning to get around to checking out Stupid White Men, a friend of mine who post here sometimes (topper24hours where ya been?) suggested it awhile back.

I would save the Teabags thread to my hard drive but the last time I did that (with the thread relating to Morningstar High and our Homework [homework there's something I'd like to see again] session) my hard drive crashed. Sure it was almost a year later, but I think the connection is there."

I have been saying than if the Palastinians used Civil Disobeideince and non violent means then they would have more support for years. I Dont like Moore anymore as he is so left it hurts. I loved Roger and Me, but i think the guy makes a stance and then gathers evidence to support that stance. Rather than gathering evidence and making a conclusion. I will not be going to see Bowling for Columbine as i know his take and its ""guns are evil"". As a gun enthusiast, i dont need to pay money to be told that.
I also dont like that he can make a book called Stupid White People, but if I wrote a book called Dumb Black People i would be called a racist. I have no time for people with double standards. PLus he looks to much like my Aunt Mary.

It's a shame Michael Moore isn't on British TV anymore. There's a British Comedian called Mark Thomas, who presents a very similar programme to TV Nation, only it deals more with stuff in this country.

I saw a trailer for Bowling for Columbine, when I went to see Donnie Darko, so hopefully i'll be able to catch it somewhere in London.

Balance in the media is achieved when other folks raise their own counterpoint.
Chuck Heston should do a film called ""Stupid Gun Fodder"".
As the commonly held wisdom in the US is that guns are good, there's a need for a film addressing some of the oddness that surrounds guns (eg a bank that gives guns out as an incentive to new customers !)

And as for the ""Stupid White Men"" being racist: yes in principle, absolutely not in context."

I thought I would steer this thread back onto tea for a minute.

A few years ago I was working in Vietnam, on the Mekong Delta.

I moved about quite a bit and i found that the bottom-end hotels would always leave these gigantic flasks of hot water and a pot of loose leaf tea, in your room.

In some of the more upmarket places, you were expected to pay for it, but the cheap hotels nearly always gave it away for free.

It was tremdously welcome, because the humidity in that part of the country is intense. It makes you want to drink all the time and when you move, you can feel the moisture just getting drawn out of your body by the heat.

When I got back to my room, I was always so thirsty. I used pull the curtains closed, put the air conditioning or the ceiling fan on and gulp down this tea which always tasted like the best thing in the world.

I believe the simple act of putting this tea and hot water in the room everyday shows true hospitality.

Aaaaah, ""Six feet under"". I've only discovered it three weeks ago and already I am addicted. Fantastic stuff, and a lot more ""adult"" than what one usually sees in american television. Great acting, great writing, convincing dialogues and drama. Me likes.

Please congratulate me, as I am no longer a Teabag Virgin. I have popped my cherry, put it in my mouth and am now currently foaming and gasping, as I had forgotten that I'm allergic to cherries. Some random observations I've made:
1. You are one of the friendliest internet communities (commun-I-TEA-s) I've yet encountered.
2. Many of you seem to know each other from RL. Is this true, or am I being fooled by the friendliness?
3. No. 1&2 are probably interrelated
4. Some of you should check out http://home.pacifier.com/~ntierney/oksoda.htm
5. The ""Lost teas""-section is brilliant. WHERE do you pick up all this stuff?
6. Being a philistine, I mainly drink Lipton's Yellow Label bags. Before you stone me, consider the fact that I'm sadly allergic to most more exotic teas. (I USED to drink Twining's Earl Grey exclusively, but can't tolerate the Bergamot)
7. The best tea I've yet to drink is made in Palestine: You take a glass (they serve tea in glasses down there) with hot water, add tea (Lipton's again) and fresh mint leaves, plus sugar. Nothing beats it!
8. The Arabs also, alongside the Cubans, make the best Coffee in the world (Black as the Devil, Sweet as Sin, Strong as Temptation)
9. I share birthday with Thomas Paine, John Davis Rockefeller, Tom Selleck and Oprah Winfrey.
10. Anal seep hell is an anagram for my name (in english)
11. I'm off to have luch and drink tea right now. (Yes, Lipton once more, so sue me)
