But how much of Korea's contemporary crises are due to the world's love affair with capitalism?
And I don't really know much about Russia, it's true. I do happen to know a girl from Russia, though. Mentioned the other day what a drag it was when the place went from communism to capitalism. I could be wrong, but it does seem to have worked out rather poorly for them, doesn't it? They went from free housing and radios for everybody to standing in line for moldy bread. Yay, Capitalism! It did what Mutually Assured Destruction and the executions of innocent Jewish folks could never accomplish -- it toppled the Evil Empire! Millions of people, cold and starving! Woohoo!
I thought we were on to something when we just wanted to send hot actresses to have sex with the head of Russia, but as it turns out, McDonald's is twice the bad-ass that Mimi vanDorne ever was.
The only thing I've heard indirectly in favor of capitalism lately is that the thing about Russian lightbulbs never burning out is a myth.
P.S. When bankers go hungry and the term "working poor" is an oxymoron like it's supposed to be, I will believe in capitalism. As it stands, it looks like just one more excuse for a privileged bunch of snapperheads to kick around the other six billion people on the planet.
Zod loved those free radios with only one station owned by the Soviet government! Viva la Soviets, they never lied or tried to cover up anything like those capitalist pigs do!

There was a theory doing the rounds of the intelligensia in Russia about 3 years back, reported in Foreign Affairs, about how basically the one billions Westerners are being supported by the 5 billion other people living below the poverty line.
Even if its true, which I don't think its is, its still about 99% more people living in the lap of capitalist luxury than there was in feudal times, say, 300 years ago. Your perspective is too short. People are generally much better off now under global capitalism than under feudalism, and better off than under communism.
The "working poor" have better health, longer life spans, and colour TV, whereas their equivalent workers in North Korea have jack shit (one in ten are near death), and much much much better conditions than the feudal peasants in Medieval France.
So I suppose, Zod, that you think everybody should do it the way we do? 500 stations owned by the same three-and-a-half people, who also own the government?
We don't have different crap than the Russians -- just better versions of the same crap. It's still crap.
...jack, your really are an idiot with your made up Russian Girl story, they had breadlines, blanket lines and ALL that crap when there was communism, it was moldy then, and now.....
OK according to some folks.. the US is a terrible and evil place.... According to other The Middle East is a terrible evil place... Smart folks leave the Middle East if they think they cant change it... I wish the same could be said for those in the US.

Frants, that's not true - lots of smart folks can't leave the Middle East.

The three and a half people actually are corporations with shareholders. If those shareholders are unhappy with the way things are going, they vote the guys off the board. Classic example - look at the headaches the head of Vivendi is going through right now. His French head is going to roll.
...and Jack, I've got to call a foul on you. If we're debating, you need to meet what I'm saying, and not bounce around and jack-knife (pardon the pun) from topic to topic. When you raise a point, I dispute it or agree with it, but you move onto something else. Its no big deal, but it just means its easier to keep track of what we're actually debating. If you want to keep zig-zagging, go for it, but it just means we won't reach a resolution on a topic.

You're 100% right...but all the "smart" folks sure CAN leave the US!!!!!
Kind of reminds me of how residency visa applications from the US to Australia post 11 Sept. jumped threefold.
As someone living abroad, I can't really appreciate what is happening in the US. Arabs arrested and held in custody without trial, no fly zones, Ashcroft and the Homeland Security guy issuing alert after alert...
Serious, serious question: Aren't you guys dead worried that something will happen again?

Serious answer: I am convinced something will, something big too, Terrorist(read:oil companies for Jack since he doesnt believe in terrorists) I think are focused on this, so its bound to happen, the real race is between wether the US has the will and the might to wipe them all out. To which I think we turned it up a notch after 9-11 but it will take more than what we are doing now.
oh but the question worried? nope. I don't worry bout stuff outta my control, if a nut wants to kill you he will....no sense in not enjoying life till then....

Worried,no do i think something else may hapeen, yeah I can live in fear day after day....then who wins without even striking a blow. Hell people in other countries who have dealt with this far longer than we have, go on and live their lives. But the daily "alerts" issued in the US media have become more than tedious, I know most Americans are stupid, but enough already.

wouldnt it have been easier for you to have posted, "nu-uh you are"?
You're right, I'm zig-zagging, and I apologize. It's just that we both tend to make more than one point in any given post, and so I don't always remember to answer all of yours.
Be fair, though, you still haven't answered all of mine. At least, not that I've noticed ... it could have easily been lost in all of this weirdness ...
I can answer one of your points, which was that the Afghanistan-route for the pipeline just isn't good. I'll be honest and say that I don't know enough about building pipelines to say whether that's true or not, so I'll take your word for it ... HOWEVER ... we aren't discussing whether or not it's actually a good idea. We're discussing whether or not Unocal and Enron and the other big contributors to the Shrub's campaign think it's a good idea, and they apparently do. If this makes them idiots, well, hey, that's what I've been saying all along. :)
Unless you want to hypothesize that Haliburton doesn't really have that contract (as they themselves claim on their website), or that Unocal and Enron didn't ever tell congress that they think Afghanistan is the preferred route as long as they can just get rid of the Taliban (the statement coming from a government-run website), I think you have to accept those sources as reasonable, y'know? If they aren't reasonable, then we're into a completely different conspiracy theory. :)

may one deign to assume you actually capable of reading? save yourself the frustration, and back off. eventually your buddies shall tire of having to read everything themselves, that they may then attempt to explain it all to you. despite your rather paltry efforts and the fetid stench announcing your dubious presence, jack isn't interested. try to forget him and move on. he's way out of your league.
