Y'know, I was about to just post one of those eye-rolling emoticons ( ) and be done with it...

...but then I had a thought: Perhaps the reason we haven't seen "The Great American Novel" in the last 50 years (and I'm assuming we haven't -- nobody's offered a viable candidate for anything published RECENTLY) is because the NOVEL is no longer the dominant expression of a culture. Perhaps only movies can speak for the culture?

Atlas Shrugged was published in 1957. Can you think of a Great American Novel more RECENT than that, rex?

You're so literal. But my point is made -- so far nobody's named anything recent. Nothing from within the last four decades.

I can think of one candidate from the early 1970s -- Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas -- but I'm not sure it qualifies as "the great American novel"...

All this thread moving is ridiculous.

Interpersonal conversations drift. Threads drift. It's the nature of human interaction.

Do you force people in dinner party exchange to move to various areas of the room once their conversation drifts?

"OK, you're now talking about TV shows instead of football. You must now move over to that group over there. They're talking TV shows."

Good lord people.

Most dinner party rooms don't have areas designated for different subject areas.

And your last sentence should have a comma.
