I remember that quite vividly.I was stationed in California at the time & was only 5 hours away from L.A.. There was definite concern over if the riot would spread beyond L.A. & what would happen if it did.Hell,I even remember Tom Petty's "We Need Peace In L.A." song that they played on the radio a few times.Hard to believe it's been 10 years.Whether things have improved or not since then...I have no idea.

there was a whole article on cnn's site i was reading this morning about the 'advanced' korean / black relations in LA (it was the koreans who suffered most of the physical and fiscal damage during the attacks, as it was their stores being burned and their store owners being beat up). it discusses the MAJOR community outreach program put out a few years ago between each side, and highlited the discussion with one inparticular korean store owner, who now happily sits outside his store on a stool, greeting the black customers who come in (i assume he greets all the customers, but, thats how the article read). LA-wise, i have no clue if things are any better or worse, as i've never been there. locally, id say with each passing day things get better. i dunno if they've reached a point to state that they're "good," but you can certainly note improvement with each year that goes by.

10 years already? Lord, my wasted life is flashing before my eyes... As for whether we have improved, all you need to do it look at Chewy's "Where's the line?" thread for answers.

It's also been 10 years since Jay Leno took over the Tonight Show.I wonder which event realy caused the riots? Just kidding. TO me rioting doesn't make much sense.Let's say The goverment makes a decision that makes me mad,soI go bash up my neighbors car or throw a rock through a store front window. The owner's of the property I damaged don't have a demn thing to do with what made me mad in the first place. I suspect many of the people who were rioting are just as stupid today as they were 10 years ago.

actually, there was an "ape-mentality" defense used for some of the rioters. no lie. and, actually, many of the rioters were more upset over the defense, then they were the charges. in short (and this is paraphrased from a similar episode of that god-awful 'the practice' in which they referred to the la riots)... there is a gene in the male, specifically the black male, which is also found in dogs and great apes and pihranna (i think?) that 'takes over' the brain when there is a mass of 'fight or flight' adrenalin. it supposedly 'forces' people to riot or act mob-like if there are others around doing the same thing in their environment. i guess its similar to a legal pleading of 'temporarily insane' or something yeeup.

Now that sounds like either the most highly creative defense stategy I've heard since "If the glove don't fit..." or the most offensive, insulting load of stinky, steaming horse shit I've heard since "If the glove don't fit..."
Hmmm...
Better or worse since the riots...on an individual level, I'd say better. I think that more people are able to accept others based solely on who they "are" rather than what they are perceived to "be".
Culturally...things seem to be better. America has been going thru a sort of HipHop-inization for the last few years. Madison Avenue has discovered the wisdom of usuing Urban music and symbolism to sell things, the current generation seems to be more culture blended than in the past. Music, fashion and culture in general are benefitting from the blending other 2 or more diffent cultures into a true...melting pot of experience. The suburban white kid can enjoy Biggie or Jay-Z as well as P.O.D. and Creedance tapes without being called a wigger, while the inner city black kid can get into extreme sports as well as B-ball and lust after Brittney Spears like everybody else without being accused of being a sell-out. not the best examples but, you get my point.
On a societal level...nothing has changed. If anything, things appear to be getting worse. even as more individuals seem to be reaching a state of enlightenment with respect to race relations, our society and government seem to being doing more and more to create divisions where there need be none.

That's because governments are concerned with special interests, none of which are run by minorities.

No, it isn't, and yes, it is.
"Herd mentality" is real in human beings. And if you teach people over the course of their lives that they're supposed to do what everyone else is doing, that's what they'll do.
On the other hand, if you try to inspire them to act like human beings and not animals, you might get human beings.
Unfortunately, I don't see much of a chance. Trash some neighborhoods, everybody goes along. Drop bombs in Afghanistan, everybody goes along. It seems pretty much the same to me.

this is above and beyond the herd/mob mentality idea, tho.
it wasnt stated as an acquired trait, but rather, a physiological one that you're born with (and can't be rid of).
whether or not thats an actual distinction is the question -- but the show (and other reports) have made the claim that its a real deal.

I'd have to correct you there. NAACP is a special interest group devoted to a minority. The same is true with ppl of Jewish, Arabic, Muslim, and Asian descent or religion. And the government, Democrats mostly, listen to them and try and appease them to get votes. So does big business. Hollywood changed the bad guys in the Sum of All Fears from Muslim fundamentalist to Neo Nazis because, even before 9/11, the Arab Anti-defamation league said that it promoted the stereotype of the Arab terrorist. Sorry, I phrased it poorly. The lobby groups with clout are industry groups, because they generate large sums of money from commerce. Minority lobby groups don't have the same clout because they don't have the same cash.
I saw the footage of that kid in the US getting smacked out by the cop. Have things become better since Rodney King?
