actually, there was an "ape-mentality" defense used for some of the rioters.
no lie.
and, actually, many of the rioters were more upset over the defense, then they were the charges.
in short (and this is paraphrased from a similar episode of that god-awful 'the practice' in which they referred to the la riots)...
there is a gene in the male, specifically the black male, which is also found in dogs and great apes and pihranna (i think?) that 'takes over' the brain when there is a mass of 'fight or flight' adrenalin. it supposedly 'forces' people to riot or act mob-like if there are others around doing the same thing in their environment.
i guess its similar to a legal pleading of 'temporarily insane' or something
