Should drag the Primary Existentialist, Cliffy, over here for this. He says humans are ultimately meat machines, and that there are no such things as souls, nor a purpose to life. His argument is extremely persuasive.
As a pending father, I have recently discovered my life is much more fulfilled. As a thinking animal but nonetheless an animal we are here to perpetuate ourselves.
There is no spiritual reward for this. At death, there is nothing.
Which means enjoy yourself while you can.
I am prevented from amoral behaviour (from no fear of divine retribution) because I think I have a moral duty to leave the world in a better place than I found it. But even then I recognise that that duty is ingrained in me by my upbringing, not by some sort of God-imposed imperative.
