I've got some shares. I don't ever speculate ever since I was royally screwed over by a stockbroker who told me to invest in a mule of a stock, which consequently dived (he was trying to bolster it for his institutional clients).
The shares we have now I'm sitting on, like bsams, until I retire. No desire to sell them for a short term profit. My personal opinion is that this is the only sensible way to invest in the sharemarket.

...unless a person has the time and resources available, i think timing the market is silly, buy shit that you think will grow, and stick with it.......

Yeah, I totally agree. I think it just depends on your mindset. My dad spent a fortune on a software program designed to calculate dips and swings in share prices. I told him he was crazy. I bought some shares in QANTAS airlines, and the next week their main competitor went under and my shares rocketed. My dad was annoyed because through arse dumb luck I made some money while his shares just floated about, and he couldn't understand why I wouldn't sell. I will sell - in 40 years or so.

I have some, but haven't made a big change.
It's gambling, pure and simple.

My grandfather owned an oil and gas company, so for my 12th birthday he bought me 20 shares of it. The company's value has risen by ridiculous amount, so I get a nice check in the mail every 6 months. Good stuff.
That being said, I will never invest my OWN money in the stock market, ever. The fact that the economy is kept intact by speculative buying from a madhouse in downtown New York is absurd, almost terrifying. I just don't see the "fun" of it all, but then again I was never into slot machines either. If I ever go to Vegas it'll be for Wayne Newton and the showgirls.

Once I found out that credit cards were invented (which happened well before I was born anyway -- growing up in the woods tends to leave one out of the loop), I decided that money is pure black magic and ought to be avoided. So no, I have nothing invested in the stock market. Somebody tried to give me some shares of something once, I told 'em to give the shares to Greenpeace and make everybody's life a little more complicated.
My great-uncle Louis, however, was heavy into Enron. Lost about a quarter of a million bucks, or something. Pretty much his whole retirement. Kind of a serious crack upside the grape to a guy in his mid-seventies.

Ouch.
One of my firm's clients lost US$100 million on WorldCom.
The idea in buying shares is to spread your risk. So when you retire or cash in, if the real estate market is bad, you have your shares, and vice versa.
Also, shares over the long term tend to be higher yield than real estate - of course, they're higher risk, too.

Yeah, that side of the family has no brains when it comes to money. Neither do I, but at least I know it.
Dave, I've got a question for you on the recent resurgence in the stock market: Who's buying the stocks?
