since the passing of john, some 25 years ago, there are always discussions and rumors, and even tv movies, that the beatles were headed towards a reunion. not a one-time deal, but a band reforming. fans are left to wonder "what could have been?"
my question:
were music fans better off because the beatles did split up?
the individual talents of the fab four was so outstanding that the music they produced (and are still producing) outside of the beatles was classic in its own right.
but would the music of the re-unified beatles have been better for the music world as a whole?

While I feel the post Beatles stuff is underrated, I think that in general it's not as good as the stuff they did together. The bad side of them staying together would have been that George probably would have still gotten only two songs in each album, which means that it would have taken him like ten Beatles album to release the material from his first solo album alone, and that stuff is really good.

The break-up showed who was the real talent between Lennon and McCartney.
Without Paul, John did "Imagine".
Without John, Paul did "Silly Love Songs", and "Ebony and Ivory".
Right now, Ringo is the most talented surviving Beatle. Say what you will, but he was a competant drummer, and he hasn't demeaned himself as much as Paul has post-Beatles.

Paul has had lots of huge chart hits, tours the world selling millions of tickets at extortionate prices & has married a gorgeous young model!
Ringo has voiced a kiddie programme, has starred in shitty films, cant sing & is lucky if he can headline his local pub!
So who has demeaned themselves exactly?

Or being nominated for several Oscars.
Ringo Starr is just a punchline.
Rimmer: Will they be be exactly the same as us? Holly: No, there will be differences. This is a parallel universe, innit? Rimmer: What do you mean? Holly: Well, for instance, in this universe, it could be that Hitler won the Second World War. It could be something even more incredible, like perhaps Ringo was a really good drummer.

Lets do the math here: John Lennon was shot in 1980 The current year is 2003 Now seeing as its now December & Lennon died in December we are talking full years,I make the equation 23 years!
Some more math for you goes like this:

Personally, I'd take Caveman and Shining Time Station and Ringo's All Starr Band over any of the crap McCartney has released the past 30 years.
I mean, by your standards, the Backstreet Boys are the best thing since sliced bread, seeing as how they have chart hits, and fuck Britney Spears, and all that.
Note: Chart hits do not mean quality!
Lessee, what else... marrying a 20 year old carbon copy of your dead wife... yeah, admirable.
Millions of tickets sold... to people who wished they were attending a John Lennon show.
Get my drift?
Paul sucks. Ringo was a good drummer. Fuck off.

However, you're probably one of them uppity Dream Theater/Neal Peart is God drummers.
Or, even worse, you're a speed metal/punk drummer... waste of a drumset, they are.

Ringos All Star band was put together to disguise Ringos lack of talent!
Lennon wasnt half the talent you seem to claim, most of his solo stuff was pure shit! Once Ono got into his head he became a prententious prick.......Give peace a chance was such a great song with the same line repeated over & over again wasnt it!
Your assumption that that Backstreet Boys & Britney are in league with Paul cause they sell loads or records is pure crap as we will see where they are in 20 or 30 years time,Paul has consistantly been a big seller!
I will admit though Pauls last few albums have been pure shit, but his stuff with Wings was great!
As for drummers, give me Cozy Powell,Tommy Lee or Eric Carr any day of the week!

Paul has spent his post-Beatles career writing what he writes: well crafted pop music. There is quality in at least some of what Paul has done.
John spent his post-Beatles career coming up with a few classics and a lot of ill conceived crap and bad pop (DOUBLE FANTASY is not a good album, pop or otherwise). And the rest of the time, he spent under Ono's thumb wasting away his talents in the Dakota.
I'm a drummer, too. Seems there are several of us here. Ringo's a competent timekeeper who's got a novelty voice.

My roomie and I came up with a theory about Ringo's involvement in the Beatles. How fucking great were they even with Ringo? Think about how above awesome they would have been with a good drummer? Music would of had to of died because it had reached a perfection that no one else could ever hope to meet. Everyone else would have just given up. The Beatles would have been the only band left.
I imagine a conversation much like this one shortly before they hired Ringo:
George: Whoa, whoa, wait, guys. Paul: What is it, George? John: Yeah! We're in the middle of rehearsing. George: I don't know. There's just something not right here. Paul: What are you talking about? John: No, Paul, George is right. Something's not right here. Paul: But we were right on the mark. No one hit a bad note or anything. George: It's not that we're bad. It's just that something isn't right here. Paul: We sounded perfect. We were really jamming. It was our best performance yet. John: That's it! We sounded perfect. I've never heard music sound so great in my entire life. We've hit the pinacle of human musical acheivement. Paul: Yeah, I know. We're good. John: No, Paul, we're better than good. We're too damn good. George: Can't you see? What would be left if we showed up for our gig next week sounding like this? Paul: We'll blow them away. George: But they'll be too blown away. No one will ever pick up a guitar again if they can't play a song like we do. We'll kill the musical art in the hearts and minds of millions of people. Paul: My God! You're right! What do we do? John: Simple. We've got to make ourselves sound not perfect. Paul: I can't play any differently from what I do now. George: Neither can I. John: Me neither. (They all look at the drummer who is adjusting his stool and not paying attention to them) John: We need a new drummer. Paul: The guy who cleans the toliets at the factory has a drum set. George: What's his name? Paul: Ringo.... something or other. John: Is he any good? Paul: Hell no! John & George: He's perfect!

Considering the kinds of music the three Beatle songwriters did post-Beatles (when they could literally have their pick of the lot of drummers worldwide), I have to think that Ringo pretty much gave the Beatles what they wanted: a timekeeper who stayed out of the way musically.
Plus, the kids loved Ringo...

Well if its 23 years why say roughly 25 (even though some & roughly do not mean the same thing)?

Oh shut up! Why must you constantly harp on about them not being "rock"? Maybe just maybe Keith Moon would have been an innfluence on them & wouldnt have needed containing!
Anyway,The Who hardly did a good job of "containing" him as you put it!

"Oh shut up! Why must you constantly harp on about them not being "rock"?"
Because it's true. The late, great John Entwistle said of the Beatles: "They made better records than us. But we would have blown them off the stage."
"aybe just maybe Keith Moon would have been an innfluence on them & wouldnt have needed containing!"
Maybe. Maybe not.
"Ayway,The Who hardly did a good job of "containing" him as you put it!"
Moon fitted with the Who. I doubt he would have fitted with the Beatles. Except that he would have had more $ to destroy himself at an even younger age.
BTW, I'm sorry, I thought this was a forum to express opinions...
