I think a re-union would of been stupid, and they knew it. And they didn't do it.
Definitely better that they did split up, added to the mystique (or whatever)

I never said they were better because they rocked harder. I said I *preferred* them cos they rocked harder.

I also said that the Beatles didn't invent every subtle twist and bend in the rock and roll lexicon. Others were doing some things in a rock context before the Fabs.

The Beatles's greatest contributions to rock actually come in the production and advertising of albums. They were the first to record the music and vocals as well as any additional background music, like a string section, seperately and mix them together later. Before, it all had to be done at one time. They also pioneered music videos. Since they were in so much demand for TV programs world-wide, they made these little films set to their music to send out to shows they could not attend.

As far as a reunion, I know that John and Paul had been considering it after Lorne Michaels of SNL made the running joke of having them reunite on his show to the extent of having George Harrison on. I think it would have worked. Just one night where they play everyone's favorite tunes, and they go back to their respective careers afterwards would have been perfect. Look at the Simon & Garfunkle reunion in Central Park back in the early 80's. It was one night of the two of them just jammin' out their old tunes to a shitload of fans. After the show, they went their own way. The show neither bolstered or hurt either man's career. They were in the same situations as they were when they came in.

My opinion...had Lennon lived, they would have reunited eventually. The money would simply have been too great for them to pass up, especially considering that none of them were big chart busters on their own in the 80s.

McCartney was a chart buster in the 80s.

I'm generally against bands getting back together without key members. For instance The Doors are currently touring with two of their founder members and Ian Astbury of 'The Cult' replacing Jim Morrison on vocals. In a magazine interview Ian said he was helping Ray (keyboards) & Robbie (guitar) to play their songs live one last time. That's fair enough but what they're doing is nostalgia. There's no substance to it - they're playing the Doors songs stripped of their meaning and context.

The other day, my friend Matt and I were listening to his Talking Heads box set. There were a couple of tracks that the band recorded towards the end of their career - 'Sax & Violins' & 'Lifetime Piling Up' that didn't make it onto albums and they were fucking great. I made Matt play 'Lifetime piling up' three times in a row because I thought it so brilliant.

I said it was a shame that the band had split up when they were still recording near the peak of their powers and that they were unlikely to get back together.

I remember David Byrne (Former lead singer of Talking Heads) saying that being asked when you're going to get back with your old band is a bit like being asked when you're going to get back with you're first girlfriend.

Matt reminded me that Talking Heads had reformed as The Heads, minus David Byrne, and made a terrible album with guest vocalists. Byrne was such a focal point in that group that it seems madness that the other three members would try to carry on without him.

I'm only really into bands reforming if all the key members are able and willing to get back together and they still have something to say.

Sad man that I am, I was really pleased when Donald Fagen & Walter Becker reformed Steely Dan because they've put out two great albums that stand alongside the seven albums they'd released a couple of decades earlier.

The Beatles would've reformed... at least once. Be it for charity, greed, whatever. Rememnber, three of 'em reformed and laid down tracks over John's vocals in '94 for Anthology... who's to say if Lennon had lived, it wouldn't have been a full band reunion for Anthology?

And for the other front... all bands reform. It's inevitable. No matter how integral a part of the band dies, all bands reform.

Queen is in the process of recording new material. Freddie Mercury was Queen. Yet, the remaining members are reuniting with a new lead singer as Queen.

Lynyrd Skynyrd lost half the band in 1977, including the voice of Skynyrd, Ronnie Van Zandt, yet they still continue on today with (questionable) replacements.

The Allman Brothers lost half the Brothers (Well, Duane Allman and Berry Oakley), but kept going. However, this was a good thing,because the 90s version of the Allmans gave us Gov't Mule.

Kiss, who swore the make-up (and Ace and Peter)was left in the 80s, reunited in 1996 for big money, joe!

Greed overrides all. And believe me, if someone came up with enough money, Plant, Page, and Jones would be on the road calling themselves Led Zeppelin faster than you could say "Sellout".

also FNB it should be noted the rest of the Beatles returned to do a tribute for John there is a big leap for doing a tribute to a dead friend and actually reuniting when you have creative obstacles. i think the beatles are one of the few bands that gave less of a shit about $ (as they are all set for life anyways) than the creative process....
