What DC Archives y'all recommend?

I've got the first two Plastic Man archives, Batman #1, and Supergirl, Vol. 2.

Where should I go from there? What was good back then?

Any news on a Lois Lane archive?

Inform us all!

I own 74 Archives, 6 Spirit Archives, The Tor Books, The Thunder Agents Archives and all the Marvel masterworks. I'm not saying that to inflate my geekiness only to say that it is an addiction and beware.

My own personal favorites are:
Supergirl 1 and 2
Wonder Woman 1 through 3
Hawkman 1
Atom 1 and 2
Aquaman 1
Teen Titans 1
Doom Patrol 1
Flash 1 through 3
Green Lantern 1-4
Enemy Ace 1
Sgt Rock 1 and 2
Legion 1 through 5
also Thunder Agents 1 and 2
The Spirit 1-6

I recommend....
Hawkman 1
Doom Patrol 1
Enemy Ace 1
Wonder Woman 1
The Spirit 1 and 2
Thunder Agents 1 and 2
Shazam Archives are also excellent

You already know about Supergirl and Plas....

I'm not a big fan of the early Batman stuff, but the Neal Adams Batman, GA/GL, and deadman collections are all excellent..but unfortunatley expensive...I did get my deadman at overstock.com for 45 bucks though...

I imagine Silver Age Superman Archives will come out first and then probably Lois Lane shortly after that. I have harrassed Bob Greenberger and Dale Crain for the past couple years for Lois Lane Archives 1 and Adam Strange archives 1....they have collapsed under the pressure and Adam Strange archives arrive in February. Without seeing it I can recommend Adam Strange archives for the fabulous stories and astounding art of Infantino inked by Anderson and Anderson himself.
Look for Lois Archives no earlier than late 2004, but being the most popular comic series of the 60's based on circulation numbers and a fan favorite it will be out shortly.....it also does well in archive polls which Dc does pay attention to...

Also check out Overstock.com because quite frankly they have a great business and sell archives for under 30 bucks most of the time.talesofwonder.com is also a great place as they have a complete selection at 35 bucks each..both are very quick as well...

Well, Piggie, You can hate me for this all you want... but my comic guy sells all archives for 35 bucks. New, Old, whatever. All 35 bucks. That's why I picked up Supergirl #2 tonight. It looked so lonely. And Jim Mooney draws such a wonderful Supergirl.

Overstock... maybe if I start buying regularly. But, with S&H... I could probably get 'em for the same price at the comic shop.

Sure buy them from your shop at that price..and he still makes a profit.
I actually pay 45 for most of mine as I want to support my comic shop. But many of the pre existing ones "non new releases" I purchased at various online places.

Oh! There was a trade put out last year of Jack Kirby's first Jimmy Olsen work. That's supposed to be good stuff as well.

Good call.....

I actually like every Archive except some of the early Bat stuff and I'm not fond of the 70's Legion stuff.

The Sprang Batman is about the only era I like before the O'Neill/Adams stuff....

Dynamic Duo is OK and I'll like it better after batgirl is introduced...

How's the first Spirit Archive, Pig? I've read things only get better after Eisner comes back from the war.

I was amzingly surprised. The art is amazing. the story is compelling. Sometimes humorous..some times very adult. the dialogue is good. There is some strong racial stereotyping in Ebony(spirit's exclusive cab driver).Considering it was done in 1940 it was very ahead of it's time..yet it was also very much in it's time (as the stereotyping and other aspects in the story will display).

You basically get a good, clean rock-em-sock-em pulp story that goes full throttle.I recommend it more than just about any other Golden Age book....

I recommend Legion Archives 5 through 9.
This is the Shooter - Swan era, the Legion
I read when the stories were brand new
between 1966 - 1970. The artwork is great,
and though the writing fluctuates a bit in quality,
it is generally Very good. The legion members
became more than just teenagers in colorful
costumes here..Under Jim Shooter, they were granted
personalities, much more so than they'd ever had
before, though still not quite as much as they
could have had. It was the final years of the
silver age.

Many changes had occured during the 60's.
Much change was yet to come.

Cool. I thought about getting it for Christmas but I went with Sandman Dust Covers instead. Maybe for my birthday.
I have a bunch of black and white Spirit reprint and I love em, but they're all from after the war.

Anyone have any of the Flash archives?

I'm most interested in the Golden Age Flash archives. How were the stories?

No Archives, but I have both the Adams' DEADMAN collection and the BATMAN BY NEAL ADAMS VOLUME ONE book (last Christmas and this one -- I already had the contents of the GL/GA book in the TPBs from the late '80s...) -- both good (especially DEADMAN)

I would stray you from the GA Flash until you get others. It is not completely solid. Unless you have a complete love for the character I wouldn't recommend unless you reaallly like the GA era. I like it but I could definitely see why others wouldn't.

I heard the Neal Adams The Bat-Man one was crappy because Adams redid a lot of faces and stuff. I think it was Erik Larsen who said it.

yeah, Larsen said it looked screwy cuz Neal re did some pics or parts of pics and his style has changed so it clashed with the original work....

I recently purchased all Three Essential Avengers
volumes on Ebay. Still reading thru them.

They're all pretty good. It's pure nostalgia for me
because I remember reading many of these
stories when the original issues were NEW at the
drugstores. There were NO comic book stores
in the mid sixties. Comics had just gone from being
Ten cents to twelve cents and I remember hearing older
kids bitching about it; now the are three bucks!

The stories start off very simple and then progress
with subsequent issues. The original line up changes
as first the Hulk leaves the team, and Captain America
joins with issue # 4, then the 4 members who founded
the group leave in issue # 16. Thus begins the book's
many membership changes that are still a hallmark
of the group.

The Writers change from Stan Lee to Roy Thomas.

Several artists come and go, sorta like busboys in a
restaurant. It's all good to me!

Hercules joins, then The Black Panther and the Vision.

I like these books. If you're a longtime Avengers fan
like me, you'll like them, too!
