I just bought an album that has a fantastic pedigree. Musically, it's everything I look for in a post-punk rock band. It's produced by Matt Talbot, lead singer/guitarist for one of my favorite bands, Hum, as well as a pretty good new band called Centaur.
On top of it all is a huge underlying science fiction theme throughout the album, the music, the artwork and lyrics (music, it seems, is the only way I can stomach sci-fi).
They're called Hopesfall, and by God I was excited to listen to this thing.
Then I heard the "singer".
Definitely of the hardcore/death metal variety, which if you hear the actual music, makes you wonder how the fuck it fits together. I play the first track and am confronted with this earsore. I cringe, and attempt to make my way through it. I can't.
Track two, again, starts off musically superior to everything on mainstream FM rock radio. There's a new singer. Excitement builds. He's got a nice smooth voice.
Then he goes away, and MonkeyRaper returns to turn my brains to ooze.
Needless to say, the rest of the album pretty much follows this formula.
So.
What albums do you have that you regretted buying the instant you heard it?
