The whole bit about technolgy not working has purely been speculation amongst the characters since Sam himself said he didn't know. It could be technology doesn't work over there, or it could be that they just haven't developed past simple mechanics. The universe we set our characters in has both technology and magic with technology overshadowing the use of the arcane or divine arts. The dimension we're going to could merely be the inverse with spells and potions being more prevelant than the wheel. Like I said, it depends on how we write it.
