LOVED "The End", Grimmness!

(A) It felt....as I'm sure you meant....like a mix of Authority and JSA.

(B) It was quick and precise. It felt like a true comic book.

(C) The action was very well done. Paced just right, with quick bursts, and well-timed dialogue.

I think what I loved most was the beginning and the end. It opened like a comic, and ended with the familiarity of Danny's personality (i.e. Jack Hawksmoor). That was also very well done. Danny, I mean. For once, I really, really understood his place as 'Leader'. The line about his role being to tell Vanguard to "Kick his arse! And they do." was brilliant. Not only did it feel like Danny had actually wrote that, but, I could see the opening credits/splash page in my mind.

Good stuff. And quite the misleading title. Nice.

Awesome. Thanks. I have to keep fighting the urge to go back and mess with it.

The JSA/Authority mix is very much intentional. Love those JSA gangtackle scenes where they just pile on somebody. I've very much had Black Reign and Coup D'etat stuck in my head the last couple of weeks. I'm sure it shows.

Hey guys, new pic in the Yahoo photo gallery. I named the shark-like meta-animal, but I have no idea for the lion-fish hybrid. Any suggestions?

Thanks, Mxy. And, no, no plans. I just had a hankerin' to write an undead lord to get myself in the mood for this setting (which I may spend most of my writing time on this story). I don't know how far up the rung this guy is, but I'd expect it to be pretty far. With a name like Godbolt, you just know he has to kick some ass.

Well, fuck me.

It took me about 45 minutes to write that last post. And, once I submitted it, I came to see that Doc had already come through and posted something that makes mine meaningless.

I don't know what to do here. I'll let you guys decide. Make it fit if you want, or don't.

Whatever works. Sorry.

I guess that could work.

I think Doc's interpretation of what Waigs are was different than what Phil wrote and/or misspelled (which I was writing off of). Not that I care one wit, either way. No matter what, Doc and I obviously had the same idea about getting them out of there.

Also, I know who saved Vanguard. It wasn't just a random thing. FYI, and all that....

Okay, I'm not trying to monopolize the story, or anything. Just wanted to maybe set us up a little breathing room. A chance to have the characters interact a bit. You know, maybe over a nice camp fire. Something casual. Some development. I don't know.

I was just bored and needed to write.

I am talking before reading actually the story.

Inconsistencies comes with the nature of our writing. They have not stopped us before to write good stories. I don't think there's even necessity to edit the things, even if we have now the power to do so. We just point at them here (like I did with the presence of Tayden in Danny's post), to avoid carrying on the mistakes.

I must apologize for not participating so far. My creative juices during the weekend were already tapped for assignments in the creative writing and english classes I'm taking right now, but I'm really hoping to write a few posts again soon. I hope this doesn't end up being another hollow promise...

I introduced the Wraigs (because there's a fucking r in it ) just to bring in something new and give everyone some free reign. Sammitch mistook it for the wargs from Tolkien's world and wrote that. I came behind simply to show that, though using things from your influences in a story is good, there are times when you just have to start from scratch and trust your own imagination. And to get Vanguard the hell out of there.

NotWedge : Some excellent stuff! Venturing out into writing other's characters I see? Sorry. I misplaced the fact that Drake had the healing factor. But, you cleaned it up nicely.

Euro : Your first post, beautiful, serene, and creepy all at the same time. Well done. Your second post, however, I hope you follow-up on, as I think I don't understand it. Or, did Mich--...er...I mean, Matthews really grab her ass?

Phil : Fantastic techno-babble! Loved the follow-up interpretation of magic. You took my brief mathematical perspective on sorcery, and ran with it. Well done, and, more to the point, well thought out. Yeah, you focused on your character a bit. But, I won't fault you. The only complaint I have is that you sent everyone to bed at the end. We can work around this, as Mxy did. But, wouldn't it have been more considerate to keep it open at the end, therebye, allowing others to come after you and post their own 'campfire story'? Just a thought.

Mxy : Beautiful as always. Really loved the perspective on the internal attitudes of Strikeforce. I'm starting to feel a conspiracy theory about Mich--...Matthews first name, though....

CJ : Excellent imagery in the dream sequence. Nicely, nicely done. Also, loved the primal aspect of Banshee. Well played. I assume her running off is going somewhere?

Grimm : Fucking hilarious!! I've got to ask, though....are you just busy right now, or, do you just have nothing to say? I mean, I've noticed Grimm's been out of the running for quite a bit. Is he going to be like this for awhile? I know, I know....patience.....well, fuck patience! I want to know!

MOE: "This thing can flash-fry a buffulo in eight seconds...."

HOMER: "Eight seconds?! Oh...I don't want to wait that long....I want it now...."

Got to say, I was hoping for some more group development time during the campfire/night, before rushing off into the action again. But, whatever....I'll go with the group....

Yeah, probably. I wasn't sure exactly how to handle the timeframe in which all the little elements of that dialogue took place. So I tried to make it a bit more self-contained. I was thinking that if it did overlap temporally with someone else's plans, they could indicate <Before> or <Meanwhile> or <Dammit wait for me!> Next time I'll try to make it more open-ended. Glad you liked the rest of it though.

I'm still trying to learn how to allow my own ideas to unfold without impeding the flow of the story. I managed to smuggle in a good bit of characterization (I thought), behind-the-story exposition, and a little humor without bending the narrative to my own parameters. Next time I'll try as hard to keep from breaking the action on the boards as in the story.

I certainly wasn't complaining, per se, Phil. I thought it was an excellent post. It was just a perception, that's all.

Actually, I thought you worked your personl storylines in rather well, considering the circumstances. It blended into the framework of what's going on, and that's important. Over all, a great post.

Yes. I'm not being cryptic here, just a lot going on and didn't really have much for the story at the moment. Thought I'd do a little character bit.

Honestly, I don't know. He's going through "stage one" right now and when I feel it's the proper time in the story he'll move into "stage two." I'm not telling you what "stage two" is.

Aye good stuff all around. I liked the s'mores bit and Bri's regression, especially. Good stuff with the Danny/Sam friendship. Grimm's lurching up was well timed.

You liked the dream? Of course everyone liked the dream...she was naked. It was bound to happen sooner or later.

As far as the whole running off thing...um...to quote my man Indiana Jones, "I'm making this up as I go along".

Quick note too -- Brianna never told anyone what Walker told her a few stories back about Aisling. So they have no idea about the whole thing about Brianna being a meta-animal. There's really been to pattern to what's been going on everyone --Grimm's barfing, Adem's dizzy -- so I really wasn't sure what was going to happen to Bri. But Indiana Jones always makes it out, we'll be fine.

Grimm : "It's an alien planet! Does it have air?! You don't know!!" No, I wasn't attempting to drown the joke (although it may have come off like that). Just finding reasons Ozzy should be left behind. As for the Sam/Danny relationship, it's something I thought should be worked on. Really enjoyed the relationship they had built when Turkish was part of the group. It's a shame that I'm writing it more than Gooz and Danny are. But, hey, while they're in school...or whatever....we can all get their back.

Phil : Danke! Thought Phil's 'night-vision' might be useful tracking a flying target in the dead of night....

NotWedge : Am I coming close with Drake's personality? I'm trying to balance him between 'the guy next door' and an ex-costumed crime fighter. Any suggestions? By the way, really loved the 'I'm looking at the stars' line. Nicely done.

CJ : Are you referring to your last post, or, those naked pics of you online?

Doc : You're strangely quiet. Same as Grimm?

Mxy : I know Matthews has come off as a punching bag lately. I'll try not to over emphasize that aspect. I'm just floundering a bit, as I really don't know how to write his personality yet. I'm sure you'll tell me if I fuck up....

Obviously not, Pro. It was Euro? That I can't reveal for now. It was not a random stupid post, that's for sure. Well. it's stupid, but not in a random way. Stay tuned, more on later.

'Night-vision' is an interesting term for it. It's more like 'everything-vision', but of course that's nowhere near as catchy - and can cause problems if loosely defined.

As much for my own use as for yours, let me elaborate on what this place does to Phil:

  • No TK: Phil's telekinetic abilities and his psionic shield aren't working at the moment. I perceive this magical world as a place where nature itself takes on an animistic, almost sentient character, with a will of its own. If you're not powerful enough to bend that will to your own, then you have to learn to play by its rules. In this context, magic is extremely dominant in this world, because magic users here must either dominate nature or be allied with it and linked to it. Anyway, Phil can do neither at the moment, so he can't manipulate reality itself. (Remember the two categories of 'magic'.) At least not at the moment.
  • Extended Perception: On the other hand, the animistic properties of this world - combined with what might be malfunctions in Phil's cybernetics - have greatly increased Phil's perception beyond his ordinary five senses, and even beyond his natural telepathic abilities. The only way to explain this is to compare Phil to The Drummer and say that he can see electromagnetic signals (including 'magic'), and many portions of the electromagnetic spectrum, including but not limited to the infrared, ultraviolet, and X-ray bands. This in addition to his ability to pick up emanations from human (or close enough to human) minds, and now an apparent ability to interface on a limited level with a few animals of higher intelligence.
  • Communicative Abilities: This translates into a greatly increased ability to communicate telepathically or subliminally with people, and seems to allow Phil to communicate with higher-order animals. Also, the ability to perceive electromagnetic signals might allow Phil a limited capacity to interface with electronic devices (again, similar to The Drummer).
  • Environmental Interplay: How do we explain all this? The way I see it, Phil, like everyone else, is being forced to adapt to this new world, but as someone gifted/cursed with the ability to perceive this world's inner workings, he has to do even more adapting, which means becoming highly attenuated to the animistic aspects of nature here. This might allow him to do many things he might not otherwise be capable of, but at a cost. I suspect this adaptation might have some adverse effects later, especially when Phil leaves this world.

Class dismissed.
