THE BATMAN: A NEW ANIMATED SERIES

Warner Bros. Animation on Monday announced that The Batman, an all-new animated television series based on the DC Comics character, is being produced by Warner Bros. Animation for Kids' WB! and Cartoon Network.

The studio also released the first two promotional images.

Poster Image & "Crouch" Image

Here's how Warner Bros. describes the series:

"The Batman will feature the most complex and intriguing character in comic book history in action-packed super-heroic adventures, melding the renowned character's extraordinary physical prowess and super-sleuthing skills with a new range of experimental Bat-gadgets and amped-up Batmobiles. This series picks up Batman's story in year three: in his mid-twenties, just finding his way as protector, defender and Caped Crusader, while balancing his public persona as billionaire bachelor Bruce Wayne.

"Living in Gotham, a metropolis where shadows run long and deep, beneath elevated train tracks and within a 150-year-old drainage system, this younger Batman will confront updated takes of familiar foes -- meeting each member of his classic Rogue's Gallery for the first time. From the likes of Joker, Penguin, Catwoman, Mr. Freeze, Riddler and Man-Bat, among others, the war on crime jumps to the next level with a new arsenal at the Dark Knight's disposal, all operated and linked by an advanced remote-controlled invention he dubs the 'Bat-Wave.'"

The Edge, guitarist for U2, is performing the series' theme song.

"Batman is one of animation's most recognizable and most popular characters," said Sander Schwartz, president of Warner Bros. Animation. "For decades, legions of fans throughout the world have enjoyed Batman comics, feature films, television series and made-for-video releases. The new series will continue this timeless tradition, while adding an exciting new interpretation that will appeal to current fans, as well as attract a whole new generation to the celebrated Batman franchise."

"The Batman is an important new addition to the Batman mythology, produced by our award-winning colleagues at Warner Bros. Animation," said Paul Levitz, president and publisher of DC Comics. "We look forward to working with them to make it the new creative benchmark for adventure animation, just as The Adventures of Batman set the tone for the field a decade ago."

"Batman has thrilled audiences for decades and we look forward to bringing a contemporary vision of this classic hero to a new generation," said John Hardman, senior vice president, programming, for Kids' WB!. "Kids' WB! is eager to work with the studio and help expand the scope of this timeless franchise."

"To me, this is a dream project. Batman is the ultimate action-adventure property, and I've been a fan all of my life," said Sam Register, senior vice president of original animation for Cartoon Network. "The characters will remain true to their heritage, but we're going to deliver an action-adventure show that will feel so fresh and stylish that today's kids will love it as much as we all did growing up. I think this new Batman animated series will be a show that kids and their parents will watch together.²

According to Variety, Gina Gershon will provide the voice of Catwoman. Gershon recently did the voice of Shikata in MTV's Spider-Man series.
By any chance are those STEVE RUDE character designs?

As much as I liked the old Animated Series look, I must admit I'm ready for a change. This looks pretty good to me.

Of course, the real test, for me at least, will be whether the writing is as good.

The main thing to remember is that this is being made for kids, so don't set your expectations too high for the writing. I'm betting it's going to probably be up there with Teen Titans, minus the zany anime-ish comedy, or maybe even Batman Beyond.
Don't expect somehtign as dark and almost adult as B:TAS. I'm not saying it isn't possible, but it seems unlikely.
I personally really like the character deisgn. I love the Bruce Timm designs from before, but this is a little closer to Mazzuchelli or Steve Rude's Batman, and I love both of those. Not to mention it fits the "year one" angle they're taking.
The look probably has mostly to do with the new movie. I mean, it is coming out in a little over a year. It can't just be coincidence, and we know from reports that Nolan is going for a "year one" style in the flick.

the art looks sorta like matt wagner's style -- the backgrounds like tim sale. overall, it looks pretty smooth, but its hard to judge by just seeing a still shot.

i love that batman cartoons are coming back, but quite honestly, i dunno how it'll live up to my expectations. the previous WB run, with the black cape batman, and the original cast of dini, timm, conroy, hammil (etc) was pretty damn perfect, in my mind. best incarnation of the characters i've ever known.

ill just havta wait n'see.

You know, X-Men Evolution was supposedly written for kids, and I think it turned out alright.

The one time I have seen Teen Titans, though, I felt like I was on some kind of sugar rush. It was amusing, but it was more silly than anything else.

'Batman' Re-Animated at WB, Cartoon Net
(Monday, February 09 02:52 PM)

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - The Caped Crusader is returning to the small screen again.

Kids WB and the Cartoon Network are teaming up with Warner Bros. Animation on a new series called "The Batman," The WB announced Monday (Feb. 9). The new show, targeted for fall, will be the third animated interpretation of the DC Comics character in the past decade, following "Batman: The Animated Series" and "Batman Beyond."

Batman also appears in the Cartoon Network's "Justice League" series.

"'The Batman' is an important new addition to the Batman mythology," says Paul Levitz, president and publisher of DC Comics. "We look forward to working with [Warner Bros.] to make it the new creative benchmark for adventure animation, just as ['Batman: The Animated Series'] set the tone for the field a decade ago."
"The Batman" will be set in present-day Gotham, but it will follow a twentysomething Bruce Wayne, who, three years after first donning the Batman suit, is still adjusting to his dual life. He will meet the villains of the DC Rogues' Gallery -- the Joker, Catwoman, the Riddler and Man-Bat among them -- for the first time.

The Batmobile and other gadgets will also get an update, as the Dark Knight controls his arsenal via a remote control device called the Bat-Wave. U2's The Edge will perform the show's theme music.

Veteran voice actor Rino Romano ("Spider-Man Unlimited," "Batman Beyond") will provide the voice of Bruce Wayne. Former TV Batman Adam West will play Gotham's mayor, and Ming-Na ("ER") will voice a detective. Gina Gershon ("Prey for Rock & Roll") will play Catwoman, while fellow baddies Joker and Penguin will be voiced by Kevin Michael Richardson ("Like Family," "Static Shock") and Tom Kenny ("SpongeBob SquarePants").

Batman is also set to return to the big screen in a film scheduled for 2005. The movie, directed by Christopher Nolan ("Memento," "Insomnia") and starring Christian Bale ("American Psycho"), also re-imagines Bruce Wayne as a younger man.

"Batman: The Animated Series" was meant for kids. It aired on "Fox Kids" and "Kids WB," after all. It just so happens it was made to not be an audience-insulting kids show. X-Men (the original) was made in a similar fashion, but wasn't as effective for one reason or another.

The art is by Jeff Matsuda, who worked in comics for a bit and did character designs for "Jackie Chan Adventures," I believe.

I like the art. Bruce Timm can't have a monopoly on the DC characters forever...

That's a mighty fine Joker.

I just wanted to update all of you on the Batman progress. For the past six months or I've been art directing on the new WB series titled The Batman. It's been a dream working with a bunch of guys who all love Batman, and have been reading the comics for years. We're staying true to the essence of Batman, but also trying to give it our own spin. We all love and respect the Timm/Dini Batman, (we pay homage to them in the first season) we just want to give you something you haven't seen yet.

i have my preferences as well. i loved the 90s animated series on fox, and loved the updated look on the WB even more. the designs, characterization, voice actors -- i loved all of it, probably more than anyone you'll ever discuss it with. i find it to be the perfect representation of the batuniverse.

all that said, odds are, i wont like this upcoming cartoon as much as the previous incarnations -- but i'm still willing to give it a try! more than likely, i'll end up really enjoying it!

you can't write off an entire cartoon, still months away from seeing it, based solely on two images and four names.

and its not like 10 years ago, before the animated series debut, everyone was raving at the idea of "luke skywalker" doing the joker's voice, or bull from night court as two-face.

those turned out wonderfully.

give this a chance.

I want the cape to envelop Batman again, I want Ivy to be drawn the way she was, and I want to make a Batman cartoon myself--So there.........Yeah.

Yeesh! Fine, whatever. I'll give it a bloody shot, but I'm telling you; If they characterize Joker as a clown--Which that costume suggests--And that illustration isn't better better in motion rather than freeze frame...I'm going to incorporate a hostile takeover of WB--And what's more! You'll owe me a coke.

The preliminary designs for theThe Batman action figures are further cause for doubt, as this excerpt from Toyfare can attest:

Quote:

...we’re hearing that Bats will be sporting a lot of these outfits in the actual cartoons, to help him fight crime, which means they’re all in-continuity!

Grappling Hook Batman

So this is how toy conglomerates respond to consumer's complaints of endless, unnecessary variants: they incorporate the unnecessary costumes into the animated series! Nice to see they patterned Batarang Launcher Batman after MidnightSpectre's exoskeleton armor (changing the midnight blue areas to green and add a two-toned cape...how original. Then again, the JLR is about to be phased out).

Who conceived this series? Hasbro?

There are two positive points. The first is Grappling Hook Batman. In terms of design, it's a cool Steve Rude/David Mazzuchelli/Timm amalgamation. In all likelihood, I'll buy that figure. (I'd also consider purchasing a Batarang Launcher Batman, if I were up to the "challenge" of customizing a MidnightSpectre figure.) As for the rest of these figures, they have done nothing but raise my appreciation for DC Direct. Why can't Mattel (and Hasbro before them) ever learn? The fans want variant figures which hold a significant place in Batman's history (primarily through Elseworlds stories). They don't want Sub-Zero Suit Batman, Blade Whip Batman, Hydro Suit Batman or Martial Arts Batman. Golden Age Batman, Bronze Age (Neal Adams) Batman, Dark Knight Returns Batman, and Gotham By Gaslight Batman are the figures fans have been clamoring for.

That gives me an idea...excuse me while I look up Mattel's address.

hm. i actually think some of those designs look pretty cool -- specifically the hazmat and the batarang one.

... but not for batman. how the heck would he know what suits to wear to the party? his one suit (completely with utility belt) should have all the goods he'd need.

which, at least, makes sense. why release a "pajama safari batman" figure if the costume never existed prior?

correction: the toy-collecting comic book fans want those figures.

thats not whom these toys are made for. rather, they're made for the accessory-crazed kids out there who don't care that our batman would never actually use a "blade whip," they just think it looks cool, and will serve as adequate punishment for their sister.

the reasons crap loads of odd, variant figures are always made is simply because they're always purchased. toy companies save (and make) a fortune repainting the same old batman figure, and adding a ghetto skully bandana to make "crip batman"

they're not in the business to make a few thousand batman loyalists happy (where dc direct sometimes comes in). they're simply toy companies.

i thought the hasbro BTAS figures (dark knight detective!) and the recent mattel batman releases (zipline!!) were amazing!

This would be a cool look for Huntress. Hell, tweek the toy a little bit, add a bosom, and call it Batwoman. I like the pattern, but it's not a very manly look.

This is OK.

This is a little wierd, but I would expect Batman to have a suit for sub-zero temps.

It's a bit wierd, but he should have a deep water dive suit. It just makes sense.

This is stupid. Forget that he's cheating. In fact, none of the costumes should have special weapons on them. That's not Batman. But, whatever. The colors are way off for the dark knight. He looks like he glows in the dark. It goes against the whole point of dressing up in dark colors, like a bat, and blending into the shadows.

Grappling Hook Batman

What is there to say? This is how Batman should look.

I have no problem with Batman having different suits. However, it would be nice if they would make suits, and features, that made sense.

Oh well.

Eh...it has its place. But personally, I think it looks too much like a Halloween window decoration. It's just not as powerful and iconic as the halo emblem, which at first glance leaves no question what it stands for. It also adds a visual dynamism to the suit that the black bat lacks.

Mattel displayed prototypes of The Batman figures at this year's Toy Fair. I'm in the process of writing a story on the event (should have it finished by next Wednesday). The story will not only encompass Mattel's The Batman line, it will preview the latest Marvel Legends and DC Direct offerings. In the meantime, here are a few preview pics:

Those toys actually look pretty sweet. The knees bend, which is a nice switch from the other 'animated' figures. The Bruce/Batman figure looks cool, the armor reminds me of the changing Batman figure from the old Batman Returns line. If I buy any of those, it'll be the grapling hook Batman.

The Joker does have to be debonaire, if they make him too much of a clown or too insane, it just wont be right

Batman and the Joker without Kevin Conroy and Mark hammil will be a big dissapointment, but from what i've read, this is set at the start of his bat-career and hes living in a train station [?] so it would make sense not to have the dark, mature voice of Kev Conroy

Oh and, those toys suck. i wish green Arrow were a real, then he could go and torture those conglomerate fat-cats. Bats should have a suit/jacket thing for very cold water and a fire resistant suit, thats about it

The latest news from Comics Continuum:

Quote:

Kids' WB! announced Saturday that it will stage a preview of its upcoming series, The Batman, this Saturday.

The network is using a similar sneak-peek approach that it used last year with Teen Titans.

The Batman will air on Kids' WB! first, then also air on Cartoon Network.

In other The Batman news:

The first line of action figures from the series should be hitting stores by late July. There will be eight figures in the first assortment.

Jeff Matsuda, art director for the series, said on his web site that he is pleased with how the toys are turning out. "The Four Horsemen did an awesome job on the Batman sculpt," Matsuda said. "It was great to see what we've all been workin' on come to life as a toy. When I first saw the Joker sculpt I almost wet my pants, they captured his personality perfectly."

Look for more on the show soon here in The Continuum.

anyone else catch the promo this week end?

bring on the batman!

it was maybe a 20 second montage of upcoming goodness.

i still prefer the coloring scheme of the black/gray previous WB batman, but hte animation and art style of the upcoming cartoon look great! very sleek and very quick, plus worlds more detailed.

the voices seemed off, but i guess just cuz im so used to hearing the others. it'll take time.

the music they played during the commercial was way different than before. no longer haunting and smooth -- now its sorta explosive, like wwe music. wasn't what i was hoping for, but definitely not bad. really added to the fight scenes.

all in all, it looks really cool. definitely excited for it.
