Stern? He didn't say anything. A caller used the N-word and Stern hung up on him.
And that's terrible.

Tell Clear Channel that, Franta. (lisacdollinger@clearchannel.com) Then post it in my "Clear Channel to Kristogar Velo" thread.
And that's terrible.

I had a friend that worked for CC and I almost got a job with them in Baltimore. They are very much like the ABC of the radio world where as Infinity (where my friend now works) is more like the NBC/Spike TV of the radio world. They get away with a lot more (all within the FCC, though they tend to get around things a lot).
But I agree with Rob, Stern is a white man with an opinion. And that can be highly dangerous now a days. He likes women, has opinions on most issues of the day and is facinated with weird and unusual stuff. Sounds normal to me. But they pull him for doing what he does as if this is such a big shock to the big wigs that he is contraversial.
Whatever...

Sadly I'm one of these poor benighted lefty European types, so I'm not that well up on the differences in approach between the Ancient Bavarian Conspiracy and the New Bavarian Conspiracy. Am I to assume ABC are more likely to spoonfeed their viewers opinions than NBC, or were you getting at something else there?

Looks like Kerry is okay with this too, further indicating that this is less a right vs left thing te and more a "uptight a-holes of all stripes" thing: "Howard Stern does have the right to say whatever he wants anywhere, but he doesn't necessarily have the right to say it on that station if the people who run the station don't want him to."-- John Effin Kerry

I get what Kerry's saying, but I think his wording is a little wrong. In my opinion, Stern has the right to say whatever he wants, but his employers also have the right to fire him if they feel what he says doesn't properly represent their company.
It's the same thing everyone has to understand. If you're being payed by someone for a service, you have to follow their rules. If they have a set level of appropriateness for demeanor, appearance and conduct, you, the employee, must meet that level, or else you can find another job.
Now, that being said, I think firing Stern for this was a shitty thing to do. That's why I don't think this whole ordeal is as much about "rights" as it is about "what is right".
MisterJLA is RACKing awesome.

the main gripe is that, not only are the rules never clearly set, they were apparently brand new.
stern was broadcasting for years via stations that tossed his show because a caller said the word "nigger" on the phone. something thats not only happened dozens of times before, but something thats been topped, with ease, for months without prior notice.

i've heard there may be more political reasons.i've heard he was a kerry supporter, and clear channel is a bush supporter(financially, i might add).sounds like the n word was just a convienent reason to yank his show off their airwaves.

Actually, he did like Bush when it came to the wars in Afghanistan and in Iraq. He doesn't like Bush's stance on stem-cell research and the gay marriage amendment. He also believes the FCC (run by Colin Powell's son) is going nuts with censorship since Janet Jackson's nip slip during the Super Bowl. His opinion now is he'll vote for "anyone but Bush".

but he also notes that this is a clear channel decision, and not currently related to the feds (he hasn't been fined by the FCC in roughly 5 years -- for the nitpicky scorekeepers, not since a democratic reign).
howard is mostly split politically. he just likes whoever, regardless of alignment. he's the (loud) voice of the regular guy, who can express himself with refreshing honesty. and, like regular people, his decisions can sway and evolve. fir example, he's currently not W's biggest fan... but he also doesn't like kerry (or edwards).
but really, he acknowledges that this is just crap unleashed at the superbowl ordeal. the FCC became "empowered" because of that "outrage" and has become more domineering over its prey. clear channel buckled like a cheap whore, and offered up the stern show, which it "all of a sudden" felt had crossed the line -- despite signing and resigning the show over 6 stations for a number of years, all of which contained content far worse than that of last tuesday.
its just a mess that no politicial will currently support him on.

The lack of political support seems to be largely self inflicted, then? If you want the democrats on your side talking up Iraq was a bad idea and the Republicans seem even more unreasonable about the notion of gay marriage (or talking about sex in public, for that matter). Silly bastard. *starts humming "Shot By Both Sides"*

stern isn't the easiest guy to give political support to, thats for sure. he's much too honest to be good at politics. plus, what politician wants the public support from someone so "vulgar" as howard stern? most politicians spend their careers developing a family-tv-phoney look and character, which can't be jeopardized with that association.
as of earlier this week, with neither kerry and bush being likely candidates, stern and company figured they'd put their vote in for nader.
... until around 9 am this morning, when they found out nader hates them, too.
 doh!

I've given up listening to Howard. All he does is whine about the situation with Clear Channel...and not in the entertaining way he used to whine about censorship at NBC.
While I agree he got shafted, his point's been made. Now either sue Clear Channel or move on.

It's going to continue to be a story until they figure out how to get back on the air in the markets they were taken from(he was big in the ratings in all the places, so that's a big chunk of his audience).

Y'know, Rob, I have the feeling they gave her a phone number (not the hotline number, but close) just so she'd be able to listen. I mean, the amount of air time they'd give her when she'd call in...I doubt they'd just allow her to fade away...

I was thinking: if this firing is real, and Clear Channel has a contract with Stern, then why isn't Stern suing CC for breach of contract?

This sounds a lot more complicated than just Stern being taken off the air. He could sue, but if the government is forcing even Infinity to take him off the air, fighting them may be futile. Even Stern says if Infinity is fined now, there's no way they can fight back.
Listening to Howard this morning, things sound dire. It may be Stern is blowing things up worse than they are, but considering some of the things he said (Tom sending tapes of the show to investigators, Mel Karmazin being persuaded to take Stern off the air), it's unlikely.
It seems like a lot of people don't care, unfortunately.

The more I think about it, the more I think maybe this is a "hoax" (for lack of better term).
Stern has been complaining for years about how he wanted to quit. He's also producing television and films now.
Recently, in addition to his other activities, he got a new gig. He's now scheduled to do interviews for ABC, despite the fact his show is owned by CBS.
Then stuttering John quits to join "the Tonight Show." Almost as if he knew his days with Stern were numbered.
Right after that, Clear Channel announces it doesn't want to air Stern anymore.
Rather than sue, Stern begins railing on and on and finally latches on to the theory that he was targeted because he criticized President Bush. However, any one who has been listening to Stern for the past two years would know that Stern was a Bush supporter. So that doesn't make any sense. Especially since, as noted above, neither Kerry nor Nader are on his side either.
So why keep going on and on about being forced off the air, for made up reasons...unless you WANT to be off the air?
All of this looks like Stern is using this cancellation as an excuse to get out of his contract to work for ABC full time.

conservative conspiracy theories?!?! aww, man! i thought i was safe from those, at least how'd stern get the clear channel to publically fire him, then? the clear channel's 6 stations will be out millions in lost revenue after losing howard's huge ratings. whats in it for them? why is the FCC now pressuring viacom? whats with the rumored big explosion, expected to hit sometime today? (all morning, howard was talking about some major something-something to be levelled upon him, probably later today).

I'm not saying its a conspiracy.
I'm saying that Clear Channel, for whatever reason, had decided to can Stern. Stern didn't "get" them to do it.
Stern, however, rather than fight it, decided to stir things up, complain loudly about being a "target" to get publicity (it worked for the Dixie Chicks) and use it as an excuse to walk away from the radio show that he's been threatening to quit for years.

a plausible theory, but i don't buy it.
as much as stern claims to hate his show, you know damn well he loves it. he loves every bit of it. and quitting something isn't exactly a difficult decision to carry out, especially when you've already got the cash, status, and girlfriend that howard does.
he's hated his producer with a variety of intensities, but has kept him around for two decades! (baba booey, baba booey)

Considering the firing happened just last week, who's to say Stern doesn't plan to sue at some point? That's not to say he will, but this issue may be a lot bigger, and a lawsuit is probably one of the last things on his mind.
Sure, Howard does want out of his contract (he wanted out in January, 2001!), but I hope it hasn't come to the point where he's seriously planning a conspiracy to get out. He can just say Fuck, Cunt, Shit, etc. incessantly on the air, and that will do the same thing (although it will make him look like he's given up; a conspiracy may shift the blame on the government and make Howard look like a victim). Still, Howard's been threatening to quit but hasn't; I think he's still trying to do his job and be a broadcaster, and does not want to see the government win by throwing him off the air.

And here we go again with the over reacting....
Quote:
US radio star fired for obscenity
A US radio commentator has lost her job after using a four-letter word on Los Angeles station KCRW-FM.
Author and actress Sandra Tsing Loh said the obscenity was the result of an editing error in a recorded segment - but the station said it was deliberate.
The profanity occurred during a report on a Bette Midler concert, in which Loh's musician husband played guitar.
KCRW-FM general manager Ruth Seymour likened the incident to Janet Jackson's breast-baring Super Bowl performance.
"It is the equivalent of the Janet Jackson performance piece and there is not a radio or TV programmer today who does not understand the seriousness involved to the station," Ms Seymour said.
The rest of the story

he's been threatening to quit during the last three, succesful, contract renegotiations. Quote:

according to howard this morning, he could in fact sue. but what would that get him? months in court, versus the government, where he couldn't do his show.
or, months in court with howard's parent company and lawyers versus the government,... and then after months of wasted time and expense, when howard's companies win, the feds simply no longer allow howard's company to purchase or sell other radio stations (all transactions need government approval).
small victory for howard, big loss for his paycheck signers.
and here is an article, showing just how ambiguous the whole FCC and their rulings are. ...
bono shouts "fucking brilliant", during a public awards show (golden globes. last year) and goes unscathed. not that i wanna penalize bono or nbc, but... you'd think that would be more offensive (and potentially more accessible to kids) than howard talking about lesbians.

I'd say talking about lesbians might be more offensive, but you're right - it's not done in prime time, and kids probably aren't listening to Howard (hell, they probably don't even watch the Golden Globes).
Not that I care one way or another. "Fuck" and lesbians don't offend me (especially when in conjunction with each other).

Stern Believes Radio Reign Coming to EndNEW YORK - Shock jock and self-proclaimed "King of All Media" Howard Stern believes his reign on the radio is coming to an end. "The show is over," he announced Friday morning on his nationally syndicated radio program. "It's over." It's not — at least not yet. But Stern predicted that a Federal Communications Communication crackdown on indecency on the airwaves will force his salacious show off the dial. "I'm guessing that sometime next week will be my last show on this station," said Stern, adding that he expected the FCC (news - web sites) to hit him with a whopping indecency fine. "There's a cultural war going on. The religious right is winning. We're losing." A telephone call to Infinity Broadcasting, which syndicates Stern's show, was not returned Saturday to discuss Stern's comments. On Friday, Stern devoted the first 2 1/2 hours of his show to his anticipated demise, a change of pace from the usual fare of naked women and toilet humor. Clear Channel Communications yanked Stern from stations in San Diego, Pittsburgh, Rochester, N.Y., Louisville, Ky., and Fort Lauderdale and Orlando, Fla. on Feb. 25. The company said the suspension would last until the Stern show met its programming guidelines. "This time they have to fire me," Stern said. "I'm through. I'm a dead man walking." On Thursday, Clear Channel paid a record $755,000 fine levied last month by the FCC for indecent material aired by several of its stations.

If it does happen this is a whopping blow for free speech. It doesn't matter that this is broadcast over public airwaves, the government is forcing themselves on our right to say what we want and listen to whom we want. Personally, I can't stand Howard Stern. I have no love for the man and won't be missing anything if his show goes off the air, but just because I don't like what he says that doesn't mean he should be silenced. Let the man say what he wants to say, those that are on the same page he is are his audience. Welcome to the dawn of 1984 everyone.

You're right. If Clear Channel or Infinity don't like his show, they can take it off the air if they want. When the government forces them to, that goes against the First Amendment.
But it seems like free speech isn't the only thing being violated these days. Separation of church and state seems to be violated as well (since Bush is basing a lot of decisions, like for stem cell research, on his religious beliefs).
The ironic part is that while the government is violating these amendments, Bush is trying to get us to support his own amendment (guess which one).

Hey, I'm happy.
Seeing as how this is something that may actually get the white male demographic (which is Stern's bread and butter) to wake the fuck up and take stock of the direction this country is heading towards under the stewardship of the far right wing and their fundamentalist backers.
