Looked like another "LXG" to me....

Let me ask this, what did you guys think of Blade 2?

Blade 2 has no bearing on Hellboy.

Indeed. I can guarantee 95% of the crowd in the theather I was in had no idea who or what Hellboy was. Didn't stop them from enjoying the flick.

Perfectly captured the essence of the character.

I didn't mean another LXG storywise, the previews just made it look like it was same philosophy of movie-making. "Lots of special effects will make everyone forget about the plotholes and character inconsistencies!"

As for Blade 2, it's the same director.

And you didn't answer my question.

There are special effects, yeah. But the characterization is a large, LARGE part of the story of the film.

I know it's the same director, but it's a different movie and has no bearing on Hellboy. Neither do Cronos or the Devil's Backbone. Also by the same director.

I'm here to talk about HELLBOY.

i actually liked blade 2. and don't let the lxg vibe make you not see it, its a nice action movie. and perlman was perfect as hb, i'm glad del toro would'nt let the studio force him into putting someone like the rock in the role, as he would have been all wrong for it.

Ok, fair enough, but can you at least humor me with what you thought of Blade 2? I'm just curious, I've noted that you say it's nothing like Hellboy.

I didn't say it's nothing like it, I said it's irrelevant to the discussion at hand. I suppose there are some thematic similarities, though. Outcast loner fights evil beings with some odd allies, blah blah blah, that sort of thing.

In all honesty, I thought Blade 2 was a pretty fair action flick. There were bits I liked and bits I didn't. I was probably about 70/30 in favor of it. I'd have to watch it again, to really say more. I do have minor complaints with the Blade character in the flicks, as I feel he's not really evocative of the character in the comics. The Blade films are really Wesley Snipes and David Goyer's vision of Blade, which is just one reason why to me it doesn't pertain to the discussion. Del Toro himself called it a "six-pack" movie in Rue Morgue.

Hellboy, the film, is very evocative of the comics. It's probably about as close as you'll ever get to a real film version. Unless Del Toro does a sequel and pulls an X2.

One of the major concerns I had was the makeup. Hellboy and Abe Sapien looked poor, in particular.

Although, I thought the Hulk looked poor in the trailers, too, and I was pleasantly surprised by how he looked in theatres.

sometimes. . .

I think the suit looks good. Much better than anything done with the Hulk. And Abe was marvelously done.

You're just part of the problem. Drunk people are still people, you know.

yes, but the bar/pub scene is like a support group of drunks. beer tastes better in a crowd.

Just saw this myself last night. Damn good movie. Best action movie I can remember seeing in a good, long while. Even watching it after The Ladykillers, I liked it.

For the record, I never watched Blade 2 because the first one sucked so bad, and I'm not a masochist.

And that's terrible.

League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: A action/adventure movie light on the action/adventure that feels like someone just looked at the cover to one of the comic books and said, "Hey, that's a neat idea... let's make a movie about it." Worth a few laughs in the MST3K style.

Blade 2: An improvement over the first movie, at least visually (set design, atmosphere, etc). Lots of bad pointless CGI-stuntman shots. Have to see it again otherwise.

Hellboy: I never read the comic, save one issue that I don't remember well, so most of this was new to me. Abe Sapien looked a lot better than the stills I saw beforehand. Like Spider-Man, a big focus on relationships rather than the hero-villain conflict. Speaking of which, Rasputin seems to have little presence in the movie, unlike Green Goblin in Spider-Man. Most of the supporting characters feel incredibly underwritten, though. Also, the news reporter pointing out the garbage truck before the first monster fight scene made me laugh. What I liked a lot was the undead Nazi assassin. That character couldn't have been done better. I await the Extended Edition DVD Guillermo Del Toro is cooking up.

I posted this on another website.

Quote:

First of all, everytime I saw the trailer I thought the movie would be stupid. I think it reminded me of 'Spawn' and 'The Avengers' both of which I really really really don't like. I knew it was based on a comicbook, but I had no idea what it was about. Overall, I was in no mood to see this movie, ecspecially with the killer headache I've had all day.

But I saw it with the girls tonight -- I am eating my own words! I LOVED that movie. The humor, action, and romance were at all the right times. I found all the characters well done -- loved Abe, and I really liked Hellboy more than I thought I would. The Nazi villians were totally creepy (sort of brought a 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' feel to it). The music was good too. I don't think I have any complaints about this movie! Four out of four maces!

Went to see this with sis and bro-in-law yesterday afternoon. I knew it was from a comic but had never read it, so it was all new to me. I was impressed. I'll have to go read the comics now.
