I haven't read any of the JLA/Avengers issues past the first time I read them in serial form, but I remember it being OK (actually, pretty cool... but that might have been the novelty value talking) until it became cluttered with characters.
X-Men is one of those things that you have to work to get into... it practically requires special history classes to be able to read.
