The writing is typical Claremont. Characters tend describe things to themselves in thought bubbles, making Claremont the only person alive that still uses such an antiquated device.
Actually, I've enjoyed that about the story right now. After the last few arcs I've kind of felt JLA needed to go to a more "back to basics/old school" approach (at least 'til they can find somebody with some really good ideas) Because the JLA consists of icons like Superman, Batman, etc, it's easier for them to go that way, IMO.

It works when the Atom is at a microscopic size exploring a rock and not knowing where the hell he is, and doesn't when Green Lantern is out searching for more possible victims. Claremont's characterization is just fine. I enjoyed the Atom's bit and how his thoughts view his surroundings in scientific terms.
I dont completely agree with the Green Lantern part, but that was vintage Atom.

Batman is treated like just another member of the team and not the prick with the superiority complex he usually is, which suppresses his presence in the book. Worse off is Green Lantern John Stewart, who has always been a dud. It feels like predecessor Kyle Rayner would have worked better in this situation, as GL just follows orders and isn't exactly in control of the situation. I imagine John Stewart is more authoritative.
Actually, except from following orders from Bats, I thought John was used okay in this (at least compared to his last few appearances) John's supposed to be the "thinking man's" GL. Being an architect, John has always been very analytical, almost to a fault (the death of Katma Tui, the destruction of Xanshi, and his watch over the Mosaic) so the thought bubbles sort of fit, IMO.
I'm not saying this is the greatest story or anything, but at least Claremont has me interested. I want to know where this is going with The Doom Patrol (I really don't see the need to revamp their whole history and Beast Boy, but I do like seeing the original characters back together again), I want to see what's up with this Crucifier guy (because I think there's more to him than we've seen so far... maybe he turns into some big bad bat or something, I don't know), and I want to see how Wonder Woman survives (although it could end up being really really stupid )
