i think the problem lies in that they often confused "stand up" with "comedian," or simply "funny person."

for example, adam sandler broke the top 50. but i can almost guarantee no one could name a single joke from his stand up routine.

that said, i think richard pryor is a damn good choice for #1 stand up.
