Actually, after re-reading the Newsarama site. I've come up with a few theories on the events that might occur leading into Hal Jordan's ""Rebirth" I'll keep this short and sweet (by putting my theories in point form).

1. Something of cosmicly epic proportions (something tearing into the very fabric of the universe or somebitch...) happens (most likely involving some sort of cosmic entity (maybe Krona) and Hal in some way), and it draws out Ganthet and Kyle.

2. Kyle loses his ring/or it gets destroyed (possibly releasing all of its cosmic energy) and him and Ganthet barely make it out with their lives. Kyle then disappears a short time later.

3. John Stewart takes over the role of "lone GL" for a short time.

4. Ganthet turns to Alan Scott, (because as a Guardian, he knows Alan Scott's ring is probably the most powerful one after Kyle's) to handle the crisis.

5. Alan Scott meets defeat, and searches for Kyle (on his last legs).

6. Ganthet calls on Raker and John Stewart to help him recruit others to handle this crisis (by forming a new GLC)

7. Alan Scott finds a down-trotten Kyle, and convinces him to take his ring (as Alan is too weak to head back into combat)

8. Stewart and Raker, along with the newly formed GLC, head into battle against the cosmic entity (a battle so epic, that Star Wars would look like a square dance)

9. The cosmic entity starts handing it to the GLC, but right when he thinks he has them defeated, Kyle Rayner (with Alan Scott's ring) shows up for the rematch.

10. The rematch commences, and they go toe to toe in another epic. The cosmic entity, having such a hard time with Kyle, uses all of his cosmic energy to try and defeat him, but because of the amount of energy being used on both sides, something amazing happens...

11. Enter Hal Jordan - "Rebirth"

I think Kyle's "major role" could go down like this. And Kyle taking over for Alan makes a lot more sense than Kyle becoming a Corpsman. Just as long as Alan retires and isn't killed I'm fine with that. A retired Alan would make a great supporting character/mentor to Kyle (and Jade), IMO.

That's a cool theory. And if there's one thing about cool theories I'm certain of is that they never come true.

Enough, people. whomod actually came here after reading the thread title (NNNOOOOO!) and was actually agreeing wholeheartedly with Rob's post about Hal being better served as a Magneto type anti-hero/villian.

And then he reads our stupid shit.

Let's get back to discussing comics, please...

I'd like to see that, just to see which one is the better book. I think in the long run it'd be Morrison's run that would be the better seller.

geoff johns posted the following about "rebirth" on his site:

You probably already know REBIRTH is a five issue monthly series that begins in October illustrated by Ethan Van Sciver and edited by Peter Tomasi. I’ve worked with Ethan before on THE FLASH: IRON HEIGHTS and we’ve been dying to do something together since. Pete, of course, is my editor on JSA, and formerly Hawkman. This is a project that’s extremely important to all of us. This can’t be just a good series – it’s gotta be a damn great series.

REBIRTH is the return of Hal Jordan.

But we are not out to wipe the slate clean and go backwards to 1975. That’s immediately a response from some. Or that nothing ever changes. Or that someone “lost” and someone “won.” Truth is, you don’t know where we’re going, but we're going forward. And that’s good. Let the debates continue.

We’re out to tell a killer story utilizing the Green Lantern mythology. There will be a lot of surprises, a lot of curve balls, some major revelations and some amazing artwork. Ethan’s pages are spectacular.

The endless arguments of who the best Green Lantern is means nothing to us – Green Lantern is cool. Period. The concept is one of the richest in comics.

Batman, the Justice League, Alan Scott, Green Arrow, the JSA…most every major player will be seen in REBIRTH.

There are going to be a hundred different questions we get asked from here until October. What’s going on with Kyle? John Stewart? The Spectre? The Guardians? Guy Gardner? Kilowog? All I can say is -- it’s all in the book. I won’t be answering many questions beyond that statement.

If you want to check out what’s going on with Hal now, you can see him in his role as the SPECTRE in JSA #60 thru #62 in a storyline called REDEMPTION LOST. #60 is out. And Ron Marz has a terrific run beginning with GREEN LANTERN #176, out today.
For Ethan’s take on Hal Jordan, you can see a promo picture in the new Wizard - #152.

Not much info, but enough for now. I'll be around the REBIRTH forum once in awhile, I'll re-post this there, but again, I won't be answering questions too often. Keep it clean and thanks for the support.

Go Wings.

Get over me already.

I know I'll never get over you
So deep this feeling I have for you
Your eyes pierce through my heart
Your smile tears me apart
I knew it, it's so true
I'll never get over you

You touch me, making my heart race
So much was written on your face
I knew when you arrived
That no words could describe
What your love made me do
I'll never get over you

Girl, you're so much heart and soul
Girl, was a moonlit night you came into my life
And now this feeling has grown
And if you leave me alone I know
I'll never get over you

So hide the moments when I feel blue
You warm the coldest feet
Can cool me in the heat
And all though love was new
I'll never get over you
My understanding grew
But I'll never get over, never get over you
You, you............

Yeah, I've seen this (and the pic) already. I like most of his stuff, but GL is a different beast.

I've been a GL fan for about 19 years or so (I was lucky enough to get all my dad's back issues from the 50's through to the late 70's) and I found that GL is the one franchise that always loses it's direction sooner or later.

It's never been Hal or Kyle, or any of the other Green Lanterns. They're just characters, who for some reason, writers just seem to lose a handle on.

I think it stems from the amount of creativity someone has inside of them. With the GLC, for instance, most writers are expected to come up with a mini Star Wars every story arc. Not only that, but it's got to be from a new perspective every time, for the most part.

I don't think a "b-list" writer and editor can be consistantly good enough for GL.

johns is a cool guy. im a big fan of his writing, but more so, his attitude.

i think he has a great handle on all of the character's he's penned in the past few years, and i also think the loyal fans of each, as well as new fans jumping on, would tend to agree.

he has a real love for the characters and a real understanding of their fans -- never trying to say "my way is the way" as some writers often do.

rather, he's concise -- efficiently characterizing of an individual who has been through years and years (and bogs) of continuity. then, he churns out something that not only makes sense, but appeals to every type of fan (or as many as possible).

similar to how paul dini and bruce timm streamlined the animated universes, in my opinion.

he's the perfect guy for this project.

He's stated several times that he is a fan of the Kyle Rayner character on his message boards and is a little annoyed that H.E.A.T. was claiming that he was a member of theirs. (he isn't) Though he has an appreciation of all things Silver Age, including Hal Jordan, considering he loves Wally West as the Flash can easily translate into Kyle for Green Lantern as well.

He's stated that this series should tie everything together. He's never said that Hal will be GL again or that Kyle is leaving. Considering how he cleaned up Hawkman's continuity I think he's the perfect person to clean up GL's legacy.

I know Geoff's credentials. Hawkman and JSA are regular pulls of mine. But I'm still convinced that GL is going to be more of a bitch to sort out. He's going to have to come up with a solid direction that the next few creative teams have to not only follow, but build upon, or the franchise will fail again, IMO (like it seems to every 10yrs or so)

With Hawkman though, he only had to please two factions of existing fans (Carter and Katar). And Hawkman fans aren't as rabid as a lot of GL fans, IMO.

A lot of GL fans tend to want their favorite GL to be the Green Lantern instead of seeing the big picture.

But Hawkman's continuity was terrible, and Geoff was able to make some sense out of it. Not even Zero Hour or the Crisis solved it for the character and the whole purpose of those storylines were to do continuity clean up. I'm betting DC's editorialship is thinking "If this doesn't get H.E.A.T. to shut up, nothing will!"

I'm sure this is more importantly about redeeming Hal and gaining other's trust again. It will take a miracle for that to happen. I'm certain there won't be death in rebirth especially if Identity Crisis kills a few. I think this will be about "rebirth" of Hal, Kyle, the corp and more.

Man, it will take a lot to redeem Hal from bad writing in the eyes of thefans and in the eyes of the fictional heroes.

Lord Malvolio fought Hal Jordan in Action Comics Weekly in the 80's. During the story, Hal's ring was destroyed and he replaced it with Malvolio's. At the end of the story, Malvolio indicated that he was setting Jordan up for a trap.

Green Lantern fans think this is a good excuse to explain Hal's behavior as Parallax (Malvolio's ring corrupted him).

No.... If you really think about it it doesn't make any sense. Hal Jordan came back as the Spectre for redemption for what he did. The Spectre is supposed to be what? The wrath of God or something? Now don't you think God would be able to know whether Hal was being controlled by someone else or whether he was doing these things on his own free will. And if He did know, and He gave Hal the Spectres powers and he was being controlled by someone else so it wasn't really his fault why should he be punished and have to redeem himself?

Long, confusing explanation but it makes sense. To me anyways.

I'd rather Hal have gone crazy, destroyed the Corps, and try to remake the universe. Then he can take responsibility for his actions feel sorry and regretful and really earn his redemption. It'd make for a lot more interesting stories. Plus I can't wait to see what Batman's reaction is going to be to Hal's return.
