Wright keeps changing his story, but from what I understand is that after college his friends "somehow got the impression" that he was a Ranger 
I read online that he was 34, so that means he's told this lie for well over a decade, loooong before he started SW:TA or his poster book (which was what he was getting death threats for, not his writing SW:TA).
