i'm going to be coordinating a contest within... oh... next few weeks or so that may also help giving people their zelda love.

what? thats not true at all.

zelda is scheduled for a world wide, holiday 05 release (and the holiday is christmas time, not july 4 time)

thats a pretty vague range, and as said, release dates for games are always iffy, but... thats the statement for now.

E3 2005: Worldwide Zelda Launch
Link rides to America, Japan and Europe this holiday.
by Matt Casamassina

May 19, 2005 - The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess is easily one of the most hotly anticipated games of the year. But the game's epic size has caused some industry pundits to speculate that it could be delayed to 2006 in one or more regions of the globe.

Good news, though. When questioned on the subject, Nintendo's vice president of corporate affairs, Perrin Kaplan, put the rumors to rest. Asked if Zelda would launch in America, Europe and Japan this year, Kaplan simply said, "Yes."

The game is expected in Q4 2005.

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess stars hero Link in an all-new epic quest set to the backdrop of Hyrule. In the new game, Link can cross over to the Twilight Realm and change into a wolf. The game is darker, grittier and more realistic than any Zelda project before it.

Zelda Delayed to Next Year
Twilight Princess development team requests extra time to make it a better game.
Matt Casamassina

Nintendo announced this morning that its anticipated new adventure game, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, has been delayed. The title, formerly scheduled to debut this November around the world, has since been postponed to 2006 so that the developer can continue to make the game better.

"After much discussion, the Zelda development team has requested extra time to add new levels, more depth and even higher quality to Zelda: Twilight Princess," said Nintendo of America's vice president of corporate affairs, Perrin Kaplan. "Consequently, we're announcing a new global launch in 2006, after the conclusion of this fiscal year (March 31). We'll provide a specific date at a later point in time. While this may come as a disappointment to many eager fans, it will absolutely enrich the game and make it a multi-million seller."

Twilight Princess, developed by Nintendo and directed by Majora's Mask overseer Eiji Aonuma, was previously set to be the company's big holiday game. In fact, analysts expected the game to be Nintendo's single greatest deterrent to consumers potentially interested in Microsoft's next-generation console, Xbox 360, which is set for a November launch. The delay leaves Nintendo without a major holiday release on GameCube.

In the epic adventure, a 17-year-old Link travels across a gritty, realistic world and is able to move into an alternate dark land called the Twilight Realm, where he transforms into a wolf. Twilight Princess won a number of considerations by critics when it was presented in playable form at the Electronics Entertainment Expo. However, even then, members of the development team hinted in interviews that they would have to work overtime in order to meet a holiday release.

Nintendo has released seven new screenshots of the game in motion. Readers are directed to our images section for new shots of Link exploring a populated town and manipulating the snow as the wolf.

Stay tuned for much more on the game in the coming weeks and months.

on the one had, i agree. i want a great game, not a game that coulda been great if the frame rate didn't suck or it continued to freeze, or whatever.

but on the other... boooo!!

the game is being delayed not by a week or 2 months, but half a year. minimum. after hyping it to no end, for two e3's in a row, and delaying other games so that nintendo could focus on this one. they're leaving an enormous gap now for the 2005 holiday season, with no promises to fill the hole with something else (mario 128? new smash bros? arcade mario kart port? ??)

Rumor: Twilight Princess to have Revolution-exclusive features?

Source: Euro Nintendo game magazine NGC by way of Gaming-Age.com.

The official story: "Nintendo does not comment on rumors or speculation."--Nintendo representative.

What we heard: One of the most anticipated games of 2005 became one of the anticipated games of 2006 when Nintendo announced that The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess would not make its holiday ship date. The postponing immediately caused many to begin speculating that Link's latest adventure would be coming to the Revolution, Nintendo's next-gen console expected to be released later this year. Such assumptions are partly true, given that the Revolution will be backward compatible. However, as recently as last month, Twilight Princess was still being demonstrated on the GameCube.

Nintendo originally stated that the delay was to "enrich the game," according to Perrin Kaplan, vice president of marketing and corporate affairs at Nintendo. The development team apparently requested extra time "to add new levels, more depth, and even higher quality to Zelda: Twilight Princess."

The January edition of gaming magazine NGC is reporting that "more depth" for Twilight Princess includes compatibility with the Revolution's controller, according to Gaming-Age.com. When inserted into a Revolution, the game will "unlock the ability to use the Revolution controller."

From a business perspective, it makes perfect sense for Nintendo to include some exclusive Revolution features for its highest-profile release in years. The extent of these possible features isn't clear, though. Could gamers be able to flick the Rev controller and see Link chuck his trusty boomerang or see the game in a higher resolution? Or will next-gen controller support be limited to smaller options such as fishing minigames or simple bare-bones compatibility with the controller and its D-pad extension?

The gaming public won't be finding out anytime soon, if Nintendo has its way. The company is notorious for having more secrets than the NSA, and a company rep would neither confirm nor deny that The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess would have any next-gen bonuses.

Bogus or not bogus?: Though Revolution-exclusive features are likely not bogus, it's too early to tell if they're anything of consequence.

Twilight Princess: Ganon's Return

January 24, 2006 - A relatively important morsel of information about the hotly anticipated GameCube adventure The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess appeared in the latest issue of Nintendo Power. The magazine interviewed Nintendo's own Yoshiyuki Oyama, currently working on the new Zelda title, about the project, and while he was overall mum on specifics, he did confirm that long-time nemesis Ganon would be back in full force. More intriguing still, though, was the promise he made about the character.

"No discussion of Twilight Princess' enemies can end without mentioning Ganon," Yoshiyuki said. "I know that everyone's wondering what's going on with Link's old nemesis. All I can say now is, we're preparing more than you could possibly ever, ever, expect."
On a related subject, Yoshiyuki told the publication that he feels previous Zelda outings served up a cast of enemies that were too easily defeated. In contrast, he said that the enemies and bosses in Twilight Princess will be much more challenging, which should be music to the ears of some seasoned gamers.

Zelda now coming in "fall"

Nintendo EVP lets slip on SpikeTV's Game Head that Twilight Princess has been delayed again; dodges questions about special Revolution features.
Now, it appears Link won't be donning his green cap until even later. In the latest edition of SpikeTV's new Game Head program, host and veteran game journalist Geoff Keighley and interviewed Nintendo of America Executive Vice President Reggie Fils-Aime.

After an introductory segment which showed Keighley and Fils-Aime being serenaded by a troubadour in Mario drag while racing Mario Kart-esque go-karts, the pair got down to business. Keighley asked Fils-Aime directly, what is going on with Twilight Princess. Without missing a beat, the outspoken executive confirmed that the game was missing its current Q2 2006 window.

"It's coming out in the fall, it's coming out on GameCube," said Fils-Aime. "There's been a lot of speculation. People have been saying that we're holding it back or that it's gonna be launched just on Revolution. Tell your people 'Not true,' it's gonna be out on GameCube, it's gonna be out in the fall."

Addressing recent rumors, Keighley asked Fils-Aime if Twilight Princess would have special features which could be accessed only when it was played on the backwards-compatible Revolution. When Keighley asked if the Revolution's motion-sensing controller could be used to control link's sword in the game, Fils-Aime demurred. "It's a great idea," he said "You should talk to [Zelda creator Shigeru] Miyamoto about it. But right now the focus is on GameCube."

Zelda to Use Rev Controller

Miyamoto says the game will be able to take advantage of Nintendo's new generation console.
    by Matt Casamassina
March 15, 2006 - In an interview with Nintendo of Europe this week, Nintendo's master designer, Shigeru Miyamoto, seemed to confirm that the company's new Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess will be able to use the Revolution's controller for added functionality.

Asked how the GameCube adventure was progressing, Miyamoto responded: "I would say that we are progressing well with completing it. And one of the most important features is that, because Revolution can run GameCube software, when you play Twilight Princess on Revolution you can take advantage of the Revolution controller."
Miyamoto did not offer further specifics.

Online reports have for months suggested that when Twilight Princess is inserted into a Revolution, gamers will be given the option to play using the freehand-style controller. Miyamoto's latest comments seem to back up these reports.

We'll have more as it breaks.

"freehanded" is actually a misnomer, as there is an accompanying part that you use the other hand for.

thus, technically, it is a "nofreehands" controller.

presumably, the "remote" looking portion would be used for the sword action, and the attachment (often referred to as the "nunchuk" piece) would control the shield.

Zelda Wii swordfighting

LOS ANGELES--At its press conference on Tuesday, Nintendo will officially unveil its next-generation console, the Wii. It is expected that executives will demonstrate the console's full set of functionalities, which is known to include the now-famous "nunchaku" motion-sensing controller. The company will also likely reveal the official titles of previously announced first-party games, such as Super Smash Bros. and Metroid Prime 3, as well as possibly revealing some new Wii titles.

Today, though, some of Nintendo's press-conference thunder was stolen when the first copies of Time arrived on newsstands. The May 15 issue of the magazine has a lengthy article on the Wii, titled "A Game For All Ages," by technology correspondent Lev Grossman.

Grossman traveled to Nintendo's headquarters in Kyoto, Japan, and was shown the Wii by legendary game designer Shigeru Miyamoto. The reporter was especially impressed with the Wii's controller. "It's part laser pointer and part motion sensor, so it knows where you're aiming it, when and how fast you move it and how far it is from the TV screen," he said. "There's a strong whiff of voodoo about it."

More importantly for Nintendo fans, the Time article revealed several key pieces of information about Wii games. First, Grossman described using the Wii playing The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. "Now I'm Errol Flynn, sword fighting with the controller, then aiming a bow and arrow, then using it as a fishing rod, reeling in a stubborn virtual fish," he said. While Nintendo confirmed the much-anticipated GameCube title would have some Wii functionality, this is the first official description of what said functionality is.

E3 2006: Wii, Gamecube Zelda Available Simultaneously
Both versions will see a simultaneous release with the new system.
    by Daemon Hatfield

May 9, 2006 - During its press conference today Nintendo announced two versions of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess will be available along the launch of the Wii this fall.

A Wii little version will be taking full use of the new system's controller capabilites. And for those who just can't get over the Revolution's new name, they can get the Gamecube version, minus the bells and whistles.

Both versions will be available with the launch of the Wii. It's really just a question of how real you want Link's fishing trip to feel.
