Cap't. If I read between the lines you have some ailment that would keep you out of the armed services? If so, fair enough...

Yeah, suffice it to say I'd go if I could, but they wouldn't take me.

The draft is a stupid idea. When faced with a threat, volunteering is looked highly favored upon over being a draftee.

I will be joining the Air Force in about six to eight years. What if I'm drafted before that? I'm going to look like some chicken draftee.

I can understand the arguement for the draft (I believe in Isreal everyone does a minimun of two years). But I don't think it's constitutional.

Someone previously mentioned religous excuses to avoid the draft. I heard that Nixon, a Quaker, drove ambulances in WWII. So he was out in the front without a gun. He managed to serve his country without compromising his ethics. This doesn't excuse what he did in office, but it is an example how pacifist can serve their country in war.

Which is a perfect example for one of the questions I brought up earlier: is military service the only way to serve and give something back to your country?

I would imagine running for office counts too -- ideally, you become a public servant.

Also, considering most of the people I know work on research in biology and other sciences, I think medical breakthroughs and developing higher technology is another way that's often overlooks. There are some ties between military and technology -- is that a good example or not?

Actually, that's not true.

Just had to bring it up.

I really doubt the majority intended for Bush to re-establish the draft.

Nor did the majority intened for us to be attacked and thousands of people killed on 9/11 by terorists. Like someone said on the first page, they've been talking about reestablishing the draft for a good 14 years now. They were saying that during dessert storm. I doubt they'll do it now, there are plenty of people that are currently serving, and have joined since the start of the war that they wont need to. The only reason I could see this actually hapening is if our casulties rises to the numbers it was in Vietnam, but as people have been saying, this is a different war, and we learned a lot about war fare since then.

Hurm...Dammit.

Animalman, did you save the post you made in response to me before the crash perchance? I was gonna respond to it, but it's not here. I vaguely remember it, but I won't be presumptuous.

I'll have to look for it.

This is kind of the problem with responding to topics weeks after they've stalled.
