CNBC DUMPS BRADSHAW: "WE FIND HIS BEHAVIOR TO BE OFFENSIVE" By: 1Wrestling.com 6/8/2004 6:18:38 PM
CNBC has fired John Bradshaw Layfield over his actions on the WWE tour of Germany last weekend. In comments given to pwinsider.com CNBC said, "CNBC has terminated its relationship with John "Bradshaw" Layfield following his conduct this past weekend in a wrestling match. We find his behavior to be offensive, inappropriate and not befitting anyone associated with our network.”
While on tour in Germany, Layfield used the "Hitler salute" to incite the crowd and also "goose stepped" his way around the ring.
WWE had posted an apology earlier today on their website for Layfield's behavior, but pulled the apology after a short period of time.
I also hear a rumor that ol JBL has been released from the WWE.

That's it. I am officially a practicing Roman Catholic. If Bradshaw got shit-canned, then my prayers have been answered.

Most wrestlers backstage don't feel that John Bradshaw Layfield is really a racist, despite his extremely conservative political views. Most feel that his actions in Germany were just him being stupid and thoughtless while using the same tactic in Germany that he used in Texas (ie verbally attacking Hispanics).
Many are happy to see Bradshaw "get his" due to the fact that he has been acting stiff in the ring, almost like a bully, for awhile now.

There has been no indication as yet that Bradshaw will be fired from WWE. He is actually very popular with Vince so I'd expect very little to be done with regards to a reprimand!

From 411:
Quote:
The Washington Post's TV columnist Lisa de Moraes covered the John Layfield/CNBC story in today's paper (page C07).
The story covers the situation in Germany and CNBC's statement - all which have been covered several times here on 411mania - but also was able to interview Layfield.
Layfield said he had discussed his character with CNBC before signing the contract, which had language saying CNBC understood the nature of his WWE role.
CNBC said they first heard of the incident via emails.
Parts of the story that refer to Layfields comments include:
"They hung me out to dry."
"I was playing a character. It's the same as Vin Diesel playing a Nazi."
"I'm a bad guy. I'm supposed to incite the crowd. I've done [the Nazi gestures] for decades. I really didn't think anything of it -- I know how bad it is, I've lived [in Germany]. I've been to Dachau, seen those places where they exterminated millions of Jews."
"I draw the line between me and my character. That's like saying Anthony Hopkins really enjoys cannibalism."
"The only thing they asked me not to play was a stock market cheat or fraud. Other than that, they said they totally understood, that it was like Arnold Schwarzenegger playing a cyborg..."
"I thought I had it covered. I thought they understood the character is a bad guy and is going to do bad things... [JBL] has done some reprehensible things recently.
"I'm the worst bad guy they have..."
Layfield also claims to have gotten most of his promos straight from Pat Buchanan's run for election. The story goes on to suggest that "CNBC was okay with the fact that Layfield's character recently was seen on UPN telecasts of 'Smackdown!' as a Hispanic-taunting anti-immigration fanatic..." and "fine with the fact that in a column on the WWE Web site, JBL wrote [negative comments about the possible sexual orientation] of his detractors..."
A WWE spokesperson was quoted in the piece as saying:
"What he did in the ring was not probably the best thing to have done... We all understood why he did it and know that his intentions were good ones in terms of trying to make it the best experience for the fans and his fellow professional Eddie Guerrero -- to get the fans even more with [Guerrero], which is what John was supposed to do as the bad guy."

Ken Anderson at 411 has a good editorial on this situation: Quote:
Last weekend at a house show in Munich, Germany, John "Bradshaw" Layfield made a very large error in judgement. During his match with Eddie Guerrero, Layfield used the Nazi-salute several times to turn the German crowd against him, and also incorporated the goose-step into his heel routine. The net quickly found out about his actions in Germany, and they were absolutely outraged.
Now, several days later, the net is still buzzing about Bradshaw's actions, with many members of the "IWC" calling for his job. Personally, I find this to be both ridiculous and hypocritical.
I honestly believe that as inappropriate as the gestures were, half of the net backlash is the direct result of previous hatred of John Bradshaw Layfield. Apparantly, he's made some candid remarks about his feelings towards the IWC. Personally, I could care less. I don't know the man, he doesn't know me, and as much as I like or dislike watching him on television, his opinion is basically irrelevant to my life as humanly possible.
I believe that the net is so obsessed with their dislike of John Layfield that they are completely failing to look at the big picture here. Despite all the glitz, all the glamour, and all the millions of dollars in revenue, at its core, we are still talking about professional wrestling here. Not the Metropolitan Opera, not Disney Studios, but seedy, dirty, trashy professional wrestling.
I'm not in any way defending Bradshaw's actions, but for fans to expect anything less than poor taste and offensive angles from pro-wrestling is absurd. It's been this way for over a century, and will be the same way for decades to come. For better or for worse, pro-wrestling has never been about political correctness.
Ready the hate mail now, but John Layfield should not be fired for using the Nazi salute to turn the crowd in Munich against him. Should he be suspended? Of course. Fined? Definitely. But fired? Give me a break.
If this was anyone but John Layfield, the backlash would be much more muted. People would be offended for ten minutes, and then forget about it. Vince McMahon's WWE has been offending minorities for years. Where has the scatching backlash been?
Where are the hard-hitting reports and columns about the atrocious Hispanic and Latino stereotypes that the WWE has been propogating for years. From Razor Ramon's "orange thief" vignettes to Eddie Guerrero's lowriders, Vince McMahon's portrayol has been nothing short of atrocious.
Where was the scathing criticism of the "Billy and Chuck" angle. I can't imagine the homosexual population supporting the WWE much these days, because the way that they were portrayed on SmackDown was nothing short of a demeaning, negative, Hollywood-fueled stereotype.
Where are the heated editorials about the WWE's portrayel of the mentally disabled? Sugarcoat it with all the "heroic" rheotoric that you'd like, but at the end of the day, Eugene is there for us to laugh at first, and cheer second. Eugene lets us know that, yes, mentally handicapped people are dopey, blithering fools.
Need I remind you that a decade ago, Ted Dibease was marching around the WWF ring with a slave. A slave. Triple H incorporated very offensive comments involving slavery and race in his feuds with both Booker T and Shelton Benjamin. Where was the outcry? Where were the calls for Triple H's job? Exactly. They were nowhere to be found.
I don't know why anyone was shocked or surprised by John Layfield's actions last weekend in Munich. It wasn't the first time a wrestler had used Nazi references to rile up the crowd, and it certainly won't be the last. It wasn't right then, it isn't right now, and it won't be right in the future.
I recognize the offensive nature of this, but ultimately, I just ended up rolling my eyes and writing it off as trashy pro wrestling being trashy pro wrestling. It bothered me, but I'm not deluted enough to expect sensitive, high brow entertainment from Vince McMahon, and I find it hard to believe that anyone watches wrestling for political correctness or reality.
Pro Wrestling is offensive and tastless. For better or for worse, it's the nature of the beast.
If John Layfield is fired, I honestly hope that Triple H, Eddie Guerrero, Eugene, Billy Gunn, Chuck Polombo, Mordechi and every single other WWE wrestler ever involved with making an offensive statement or obscene gesture in the ring is handed their walking papers as well.
John Layfield can not be the sacrificial lamb for decades and decades of offensive behaviour in pro-wrestling. It was an extremely insensitive thing to do, but it was also one of thousands of insensitive moments in wrestling history, all of which have gone completely unpunished.
What I find even more ironic as I look around the net is that half of the people coming down on Layfield for his actions in Germany were "beginning to enjoy" his anti-Mexican character. Where's the hypocrisy there?
I don't think it's right to be selectively offended by wrestling.
Either be offended by every distasteful thing that has occured in the WWE for the last twenty years, or understand that this is pro wrestling, a business where class and taste don't exactly run rampant.
I can completely understand how the Jewish population would be deeply offended by Bradshaw's actions. Nazi Germany and World War II evoke painful memories for all of us, and this especially rings true for them. I do think there's a large difference though between ignorantly throwing out a Hitler hand gesture, and grabbing the house mic and making jokes about the Holocaust.
It's ridiculous to assume that Layfield condones the tragic extremination of over six million Jews just because he goose-stepped around the ring. I don't know the man. I don't know what kind of person he is, or of what character he holds. I don't know if Vince asked him to make this gesture, nor do I know if it was a spontaneous action.
The media is so obsessed with hype though that they want to turn a two-second error of judgment into a front-page witch hunt, 411 included. Bradshaw made an inappropriate gesture, the crowd booed him heavily, and in the end, the good guy won. I can't tell people what to be offended and what not to, but I can say that it's ridiculous to start labeling someone a racist, or a Nazi-sympathizer, or anything else without concrete proof. Correct me if I'm wrong, but hasn't Layfield been best friends and tag partners with an African American for years.
I can also say this: at the end of the day, it was an insensitive mistake. The same kind of mistake that all of us make in our less-public lives, and the same kind of mistake that Vince McMahon and his performers have been making for years. At one point or another, they've offended anyone and everyone.
America has become so obsessed with political correctness that it's nearly impossible to even discuss these things objectively. I'm sure a large chunk of you reading this will fall right into that mentality, labeling me a racist and Anti-Semite for simply pointing out the hypocritical nature of these attacks, and the inherent offensivenesn of the pro wrestling industry. If that's how you chose to read between the lines, so be it.
The problem isn't with Justin Layfield though. At the end of the day, the problem is with the wrestling business. If you want to lash out at someone, I honestly think Vince McMahon is much more appropriate target than Layfield. Layfield made one offensive gesture in his career. McMahon has made a career of offensive behavior.
Take an honest, hard look at the situation. Put aside all personal distaste for John Layfield, and take an objective look at the pro-wrestling business. When the haze clears, I think you'll wind up seeing a man who after a decade in the business made a stupid mistake, not a Jew-Hating, Nazi-sympathizing monster. The line of good taste has been blurred so much by Vince McMahon over the last decade, that Bradshaw probaby never even realized he had crossed it until he was standing on the other side. Because of this, he might lose everything.
I find that sad.

To be honest with ya this is pretty much what I been thinking! JBL is a heel & as such should have the crowd against him,and quite frankly its hypocrytical of these so called fans complaining about this incident when nobody has complained about all the anti-French propaganda that WWE has put out on the tv braodcasts in recent times! For my money this is worse than what Bradshaw did on a non-televised show.
Personally I've never been a Bradshaw hater & actually kinda like him when he was with the APA (just for the backstage vignettes, not his in ring ability),and I despise the current angle as I feel any angle involving racism of any kind is uncalled for,but nobody has raised any complaints about his anti-Mexican stuff,so why is this so different? As that guy said, this is so blown out of proportion by people who just wanna cause a ruckus cause its JBL! If Kurt Angle,The Undertaker,Jericho,Benoit or The Rock had done the goose stepping it would have been laughed off & nobody would be calling for their heads!

I agree with what you're saying except for one thing: I don't like Bradshaw. When he with the APA, the backstage vignettes of them smokin', drinkin', and playin' poker with other stars were fun. But I never really paid much attention when they'd wrestle. I just wasn't impressed. And, ever since he's been flyin' solo, I realize why I don't like him: he's just not that good. Do I dislike him as a heel? Yes, and I know that's the point. Would I like him if he were a face? Nope. And, while I understand the reason for it (gotta keep the boss happy), it bothers me that he gets so much TV time while more impressive wrestlers get shunted to the side.

Thats always been a problem,Hogan always hogged the limelight while more talented guys went by the wayside, ditto for HHH,Big Show & about a thousand other guys, but this has nothing to do with the whole nazi thing! If he were sacked because he's a shit wrestler, fine, but to be sacked for something such as this would be little more than hypocrisy from both WWE & the fans!
Why is one show of racism worse than another? Theodore Longs angle has been as racist as it gets, ditto for the La Resistance anti-French angle! Just because people hate Bradshaw does not make his actions any worse than any other superstar who takes part in a racist angle! If Bradshaw is sacked,so should Long,The Rock,HHH & John Cena.
I have always been very vocal on my hatred of racism as an angle, but WWE has built itself on the premise that anyone non-American is perfect heel material, with the bulk of the foreigners ending up as heels. There is nothing wrong with national pride, but to do it at the expense of any other nation is just plain arrogance & stupidity at its worst!

Holy hell, I agree with Nowhereman.
I always thought the French angle was ridiculously racist. Like the Canadian angle that came before it. And the Latino stuff that the editorial up there touches on. And when Regal was a heel basically because he was British.
To vilify Bradshaw over one racist gesture but ignore the countless other examples of racism in the WWE would be hypocritical.
Thing is- I can’t spell or type. I spell so badly my spell check doesn’t even know what I was trying to spell. And I have five Eisners HAHAHAHHA!!

I actually enjoyed Regal's "I'm better than you becuase I'm a civilized English man" bit. He pulled it off quite well. It's also why I enjoyed his run as commisioner. In the ring, meh. But, his ability to talk, and to pull off the angle, quite good. I wish they would do more with him. Give him some top wrestler and a couple new kids, and let him go up agaisnt Evolution. This time, let him be the face, with his "I'm better than you because I'm and English man" thing. It might be fun.
Oh, and Bradshaw just plain sucks.

And that is why WWE keeps on with racist angles, because American fans love stereotypes! I have lived in England all my life & I've never met anyone with that kind of attitude!
Also Regal is not wrestling right now as WWE is worried that the risk of him dying in the ring is too high after his recent heart problems!

I think I should better state my opinoin on Regal. I only enjoy his stereotype. The others are disgraceful, especially the hispanic and asian stereotypes. But Regal, he is a showman. That doesn't make stereotyping right, but I don't find Regal offensive. The Eugine stuff, however, that's offensive.

So how would you like it if all Americans were played as fat dumb hicks? You may like Regals stereotype but it doesnt make it right! Yes Regal is funny, but a stereotype is still a stereotype! You might not find it offensive but maybe us English do.........get it now?

Just about all Americans are played as dumb hicks. And I am really pissed about Angle. At first, when he came in with the medals, and went on about how he was the only real athlete, it was OK. He was new. But, during Invasion we saw what he was really capable of, around 9-11, when he became an American Hero, battling the evil tratorous scum, namely Stone Cold Steve Austin. And as soon as The Rock returned, Angle went dumb again. If anything, WWE is an equal oportunity stereotyper. William Regal has a gentlemanly look about him. It would be nice to see him as a face, looking down on the crap that is Evolution (you know, the American heel group).

Oh,you mean the American heel group lead by a Canadian?
How many Americans are portrayed as dumb hicks?
Angle isnt portrayed as a stereotyped dumb American, his character is pretty unique!
Even redneck characters like Austin are not portrayed as dumb!
Oh,and as for Regal, dunno many upper class snooty Brit types with tattoos on their arms!

You have a point.
However, it seems you view Angle the same way I view Regal. We both admit they are good at what they do, and we both don't like that the wrestler who is supposed to represent our respective nations isn't doing so in a positive manner.
That said, I'm all for a show that stays away from stereotypes, but I doubt we'll ever get one.

You know, I'd pay to see an American wrestler portrayed in the "dumb hick" stereotype that other countries have of us...
And that's terrible.

Woulda been cool if the crowd went along and "Sieg Heil"-ed back to Bradshaw. That would have messed up his plans. Most of the german wrestling fans are VERY conservative, at least-IMO, WTF. The guy was told to generate heat which he did! I don't much care for his in-ring-skills, especially the silly push, but now they male a silly example, while they choke on an overdose of FREEDOM FRIES! Not a year til we see the next PATRIOT!!!
Think clean thoughts, chum.

All before my time(but I have seen tapes of them). Were they really done in the stereotype that someone like Nowhereman would have of us, though, or were they done in the New Englanders' stereotypical view of Southerners? (this question is addressed both to Yanks and non-Yanks)
And that's terrible.

- UPN officials were upset with either the planned John Bradshaw Layfield promo on Smackdown yesterday or the one he actually gave. If it was the one he gave, the promo will be edited. If not, the one that he did end up giving was an edited version. The promo mainly featured him bashing CNBC for firing him. [WrestlingObserver.com]

jbl was on the howard stern show this morning, talking about cnbc.
and, y'know what? after hearing his side, i kinda agree with him.
like many of you, i don't like bradshaw -- not the guy, but the wrestler. i think its very lame. he's like a poor man's vince (or a poor wrasslin promotion's vince). he's not very intimidating looking, can't really seem to wrestle all that well... and i think it really removes eddie's credability.
so, in that regard, i think he's a tool.
but in this case, i think cnbc was wrong.
they essentially dropped him because he is an actor playing a role. a cruel role in a public manner, but a role none the less. his on-screen persona is not indicative of his off-screen life, just as his on-wwe-screen persona is not indicative of his on-cnbc-screen persona.
the example he gave, which i feel makes sense, is an advertising company dropping anthony hopkins because he portrayed hannibal lector. or any of the actors for portraying nazis in "the pianist" (etc)
thats a big, and legitamate gripe.
but not the only one.
the other aspects about cnbc dropping jbl over this incident is the fact that they didn't drop him for any other reason. his regular ass hole tactics were, apparently, fine. his sneak attacks on already injured wrestlers were fine. his constant racism towards eddie and belittling mexicans or latinos in general were fine.
after hearing the interview, it really seems like all cnbc had to do was issue a press release, clarifying that the wwe bradshaw and cnbc bradshaw were two different people

What it basically boils down to was the negative press!
The press got their teeth into the whole nazi thing which blew the situation up beyond all proportions & CNBC panicked as they feel it will tarnish their image!
I'd understand it if Bradshaw had done this in his private life, but as he has already said,he is for all intents & purposes,an actor playing a part!
They knew what he was when they took him on,they should have known what his job entails!
I fully empathise with Bradshaw over this whole incident as I dont think he has done anything worse than any other heel in the history of wrestling, yet because he has a lack of fans,he is being made an example of!
Its hypocrisy from CNBC,its hypocrisy from WWE & its hypocrisy from us the fans!
