Since vanguard means to lead or the leading persons.... why not have them be geniuses, mythical folk, and humans with more psi/paranormal abilities? Make them be not just a team, but also dabbling in politics (not so much like the Authority, but more conspiratorial), being socially conscious, and also winning wars and battles that need to be won?
I don't know the name should mean something more than just a name. Make them be the forefront ...or something.
