Pig Iron, Sam Raimi is an admitted Spidey fan. A HUGE Spidey fan. He wasn't going to be satisfied with something that wasn't, at least, mostly faithful to the source material.
I can even forgive the "organic webshooters" (i.e., spinnerets) bit. At least they weren't in his butt, like a real spiders are.
