quote: It appears that Ted Turner, who lost control of his TV networks (TNT, TBS, CNN, etc.) due to the AOL/Time Warner merger in 1996 may soon get the opportunity to regain control of those networks.
Turner has been upset about losing his power within his company for sometime now, and most believe that he will jump at the chance to regain control of his networks, which AOL Time Warner could unleash soon.
In the early days, Turner built up his networks largely off the success of pro-wrestling and later made WCW a worldwide powerhouse that, through some of the mid-90s, actually beat WWE in ratings, buyrates, and house show attendance. Turner was outraged when AOL Time Warner dumped WCW, allowing rival WWE to buy the promotion.
Over the past few years, rumors have circulated that Turner has had interest in either creating a new promotion, or working with a current one. If he regains his networks, it could open the door for wrestling to get a primetime TV slot on one of his networks. Right now, networks really have no interest in airing any wrestling (other than WWE) on high profile timeslots which has made it almost impossible for anybody to compete with WWE. Turner, through his attraction to wrestling, could change that.

I suppose anything is possible.......but could he make it work?Sure.....let's think about it here for a minute.WWF is the ONLY wrestling program on TV.NWA has pay-per-views but so far that's it.The thing is ,the longer WWF runs without competition....the lower the ratings go(as fans get bored by them being the only thing on),and the current ratings are showing that this is the case. Now,a Turner backed wrestling promotion could very well make a decent competitor to the WWF.With the right mix of talent & less..."attitude"(for lack of a better word) than the WWF,could very well make for a refreshing change.Who knows? Crazier things have happened.

quote: Lask week rumors came up that Ted Turner may try to buy back TBS and thus bring back some type of pro-wrestling programming. Turner recently announced that he was leaving his spot with AOL-Time Warner, and expressed interest in buying back CNN.
However, yesterday, Turner said that he has lost $7-$8 billion off his net worth since the AOL-Time Warner merger, due to falling stock prices. He stated that he does not have the money to buy back CNN. That news obviously indicates that he also won't have enough money to buy back TBS, or start up a major wrestling promotion to compete with WWE.

WCW had something going for it, circa '97. Damned if I know what it was, though, even in hindsight. Somehow, I doubt it was Ted Turner.
