I started playing Freedom Force once I got my new computer. I can safely say it's one of the coolest games ever.

It's like all the great 60s Marvel comics, but without the brains! And with a Sean Connery soundalike playing the Aquaman/Namor analogue.

Anyone else play it?

I've finished it twice. And when I'm bored I sometimes mess around with its danger room.

I bought City of Heroes for 50 bucks and when I got it I found out I had to pay another 15 bucks a month to play it online.

WHAT THE FUCK WAS THE POINT OF CHARGING ME 50 DOLLARS FOR THE GAME ITSELF!?!?!?

I dunno.

I downloaded the demo and wasn't too impressed.

As you said it was like some 60's MARVEL comic. A cliche laden 60's MARVEL comic!

Can you import skins into the game? That'd probably be the only reason for me to get that one.

Agreed. This is the worst aspect of the game. All the characters have silly origins.

I played the tutorial. I don't see how this game can be as deep as Spider-Man 2, but I did read great things about it.

I love the 60's theme. It's nice to see a game that embraces the fighting of Communist scum!

In all seriousness though, silver-age silliness notwithstanding, the execution of the story was actually kind of good. Not to mention the fact that this is a videogame - the same kind of medium where Mortyr's story is considered feasible (The Nazi's got hold of a time machine, and then they use that time machine to go to the future and instead of acquiring a nuclear bomb or something that might help them win the war they steal a magic medallion which somehow messed up the weather and then you get your own time machine and had to go back in time to retrieve the medallion and all this time you're fighting Nazi soldiers but you never once got to see nor fight Hitler - Any game that has you fight Nazis but not Hitler is damn stupid).

And I think technical aspects of the game itself is good, it really needs strategic thinking in lieu of cat-like reflexes normally required for FPSes (I was thinking whomod might like it for that.)

And much in the same way that books sometimes have better bookbinds or covers, Freedom Force is actually one of the games from its time that ran smooth, even with all the graphics options turned on and with the destructible terrain stuff, on my Pentium 500mhz pc with a 32 MB Savage card and 128 mb of SDram - which can't even run other games as smoothly(star wars force commander and Quake 3 Arena comes to mind)...that's got to mean that the programmers actually thought of who they're programming for instead of just pushing out "nice graphics" and worrying about little else...

Do you try talking to it?

I bought this game the day it came out. It was fun, and I enjoyed the dileberate throwback and Kirbyesqueness of it. But, I never really found the replay value of it. I went through it once, and that was it. Plus, the create a character function was piss poor and only allowed me create generic looking superheroes and no ability to mix and match the costumes. Maybe they've done a lot since then (it was two years ago), but at the time the game fizzled out really quick.

It tends to put you immediately at a disadvantage and IMO is a sign of true weakness.

There's a really cool JLA mod on there. I only played it for a little, but it appears that a lot of effort was put into it.

I was surprised to see 4 replies, but was not surprised that none of those were in reaction to the awesomeness of the JLA mod, despite understandably crappy voice acting.

Well I was at Best Buy today buying printer ink when lo and behold, theres one lone copy of "Freedom Force" in the computer games section and it's sticker priced at $9.99!

I'm not even gonna mess with the game itself. I want to jump into those JLA/JSA mods and skins from that linked page.
