think about it ... 4 mil! that aint too much at all to the kob. and yet, if he bought it from, say, my father, my entire family could retire, and life out the rest of our lives in paradise.
Kobe also bought and paid for two top lawyers to defend him...the female lawyer defended the Ramseys, and the guy defended Colorado Avalanche goalie Patrick Roy in some DUI incident (Roy was found innocent).
I think poor, persecuted Kobe is still doing good despite the charge against him. ![[yuh huh]](images/icons/rolleyes.gif)

kobe also first publically said he didn't sleep with the other girl at all. ... later updated, of course.
i'd think, in this case, public statements can't simply be taken as "supported conclusions"
further, the ring was bought prior to the public statements.

Where did you hear that? He said he didn't rape her, he never said he didn't have sex with her.

Well, if it can't, then nothing can.

No, he commissioned it before the charges were even made, but he bought it after.

when the story first leaked, he denied it. i'll try to find an article on that later.

thats a nitpick.

so fine. he ordered, talked about, looked at, shopped for, picked out (whatever) the ring for his wife before it all went public. how does that change things?

You're getting away from the point. Your assumption that he is "buying his wife's forgiveness and silence" is unfounded.

after he committed adultery, he purchased a gift for his wife. a $4 mil gift. thats not a coincidence.
in our world, if you have a girlfriend and you fuck up in some way, you buy her flowers to help ease it over. the bigger the fuck up, the bigger the flowers.
a crass way of putting that is that you're "buying her forgiveness."
a great example of that is the time that kobe purchased that $4 mil ring for his wife after he commited adultery

Riiiiiight....PURE coincidence on the timing of his bribe err gift to his wife...
I'm guessing that this is the part of my post that you were reacting to. Let me clarify: I wasn't talking about Kobe's motives for buying the gift. What I was saying is that Kobe buying something for his wife has no bearing on the outcome of the case itself. It's not evidence, and it shouldn't do anything to change or support in anybody's mind whether or not Kobe did it, and yet it does. That's what I think is sad.

By the way, the latest "breaking" story in this case is that the accuser was committed recently(before the alleged incident) in regards to her mental health--something like "so she wouldn't be a threat to herself." So I ask Rob and the Nature Boyz--does this, coupled with the revelation that she OD'ed earlier this year, have any affect in your mind whether or not Kobe raped her?

for starters, i think its wonderful that you can judge her, but damn anyone for judging kobe.
secondly, i never said i thought kobe raped her (which i don't).

http://www.usatoday.com/tech/news/2003-07-24-victim-misidentified_x.htm Web sites post photo of wrong woman in Kobe Bryant case EAGLE, Colo. (AP) — The family of a young woman wrongly identified on the Internet as Kobe Bryant's accuser has hired an attorney in hopes of stopping her image from being circulated online. Attorney Sienna LaRene said the parents, Bob and Beth Matthews of Eagle, aren't looking for financial damages. "They just want this to stop," LaRene said Wednesday. "This is a wildfire out of control, and the only way to stop it is people to do the right and responsible thing." LaRene said she has sent "cease and desist" letters to several Web sites, asking them to stop using the woman's picture. If sites don't comply, she said she will get court orders and did not rule out libel lawsuits. There are similarities between the woman and the alleged victim, who has accused the Los Angeles Lakers star of sexually assaulting her at a Colorado resort June 30. Bryant has been charged with felony assault, but says the sex was consensual. Both women are 19, have the same first name and attended Eagle County High School. While the young woman in the Bryant case was a cheerleader, the other woman was on the school's dance squad. "Somebody put two and two together — these intersections of similarities — and came up with five," LaRene said. Early on, there were two pictures, one of the woman's dance team and another with her standing next to a young man at a dress-up event. Also posted was the name, address, phone number and e-mail of the alleged victim in the Bryant case. Since then, some Web sites have altered photos to put the wrong woman's face on nude bodies, she said, and others have attached text calling her every combination of profanity imaginable. "The young woman is suffering. She's mortified and the family is under a great deal of stress," LaRene said. "They're using this girl's photograph and it's causing injury." Terra Lycos said Thursday that the Bryant case is one of the most popular online search topics in its history. Only the Sept. 11 attacks, the Iraq war and the 2000 presidential election have drawn more interest, the Internet network said.

Show where I judged her once. I'm stating something that was reported as a fact, just like you did with the story about Kobe buying his wife a gift. The stories I stated were just as relevant, yet you didn't post them--which makes me think you want to slant this thread against Kobe.
You're worse than bsams--at least when he doesn't read what I'm typing he makes a joke about it, or quotes a good movie.

no, jack, not everything is a conspiracy.
the only reason i chimed in on this thread was to point out how ridiculous and/or astounding it is that kobe has 4 million dollars to throw around on a gift (a lump sum that the members on this board won't collectively earn in 5 lifetimes)

It wasn't a conspiracy theory. When the only thing you want to say is how ridiculous something Kobe did is, then it appears you're only interested in dissing Kobe.
You still didn't point out where I judged the girl. See, the difference between me and you is that when I throw out an accusation, it's actually based on something.

aww... im sorry... ok. "when the only thing you want to say about the accuser is her negative past, then it appears you're only interested in dissing the accuser." ...notably ignoring my latter comment on kobe, the adultery, and/or the ring (again, my only cling to this argument, before you showed up, that is ![[humina humina]](graemlins/love.gif) )

The only thing brought up in the news about the accuser has been her negative past, so no sale. And I actually said at the very beginning that I don't know anything about either Kobe or the girl, and that the girl's ODing months ago has, like the ring, absolutely nothing to do with the case.

Two more witnesses are coming forward in defense of the alleged victim. They are supposedly very credible......but I still doubt it. I will be very upset if he didn't do it and still ends up in jail. ![[...rassamnfrackin...]](graemlins/grumble01.gif)

i could be mistaken (might be more of a question for dave), but i believe the rape laws are written to greatly defend the victim.
taking sexual education classes while an RA in college, we pretty much got the impression that all the girl has to do is say she was raped, and she was. even if, at the time of sex, it was consensual, she's allowed a certain grace period to "change her mind" and rethink the scenario.
personally, i dont think kobe (meant to) raped her. not that i have any information whatsoever, but im sure he's offered ass all the time, without much trouble -- i wouldn't think he'd have to force himself on some random girl.
however, by the letters of the law (or atleast my assumptions of such), its more than possible this chick has a very strong case against him.

quote: LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Former boxing champion Mike Tyson, who served three years in prison on a rape conviction, says he empathizes with basketball star Kobe Bryant (news) and the sexual assault charges faced by the Los Angeles Lakers guard.
"I've been in an ordeal like him, and I know how easy it is for a young man to be a big shot, a big star in America's eyes and then get in another arena and he's nobody. That means the judicial arena," Tyson, 37, said in an interview airing Monday on the syndicated TV show "Access Hollywood."
The one-time heavyweight champion, convicted of rape in 1992 and suspended from professional boxing for biting the ears of Evander Holyfield during a 1997 bout, said he wished Bryant "the best" and urged the NBA star to stay close to his family.
"When it comes to the nitty-gritty, if he ever gets some (jail) time, which I hope he doesn't, and which I don't think he is going to, he's gotta keep in consideration who's gonna come see him, who's gonna be in touch, who's gonna be his contact if anything happens," Tyson said. "It can happen to anybody."
Bryant, 24, has been charged with class 3 sexual assault, the equivalent of rape under Colorado law, stemming from allegations made by a 19-year-old Colorado woman who worked as a concierge at a resort where he was staying in June. The athlete has denied he raped the woman, insisting their encounter was consensual and that his only wrongdoing was adultery.
He is due back in court Oct. 9 for a preliminary hearing that will determine whether he must stand trial. If convicted, he could face a sentence of four years to life in prison.
