I greatly prefer RedHawks to "Redskins." I got into a disagreement with former Miami U. president Phil Shriver back in 1990 when there was the first serious push on to change the nickname. My wife had uncovered evidence that suggests that the term "redskin" referred not only to an indigenous person, but that it also referred to a dead one, killed by the army, frontiersmen, etc.
While "redhawk" doesn't roll trippingly off the tongue, I expressed my opinion to Miami, as an alum, to call themselves Big Red, as they had done back in the 1920s. In that manner, Miami was still nodding toward its history in choosing its nickname. And "big red" has no real reference to anything other than the color red.
Oh well. The current name is better than "redskin."
