My power went out on Friday, and I've spent the last hour and a half rerouting everything. Oh well. I wouldn't have picked Jacksonville or Atlanta to win anyway.

I think the Bengals have a real chance at Bmore. I also think the Browns can suprise some people on Monday night.

Anybody watch my Miami RedHawks last night? Rothlisberger is the real deal. Great pocket presence, field awareness, ability to sidestep the rush, great accuracy and release. My guess is he's gonna turn pro after this year. He's got nothing left to prove in the MAC.

Big Ben is, indeed, the real deal. I only caught the last few minutes of the game but his statline was, to say the least, astounding. If he does turn pro, I see no reason to believe he won't be the next MAC quarterback to be successful in the NFL. Despite his lack of exposure, he'd also be a certain 1st round pick, probably the 2nd QB taken after Eli Manning.

I still hate calling them "the Miami Redhawks", though....

I greatly prefer RedHawks to "Redskins." I got into a disagreement with former Miami U. president Phil Shriver back in 1990 when there was the first serious push on to change the nickname. My wife had uncovered evidence that suggests that the term "redskin" referred not only to an indigenous person, but that it also referred to a dead one, killed by the army, frontiersmen, etc.

While "redhawk" doesn't roll trippingly off the tongue, I expressed my opinion to Miami, as an alum, to call themselves Big Red, as they had done back in the 1920s. In that manner, Miami was still nodding toward its history in choosing its nickname. And "big red" has no real reference to anything other than the color red.

Oh well. The current name is better than "redskin."

Redhawk wasn't what bothered me. It's that it's Miami....of Ohio. I'm sorry, but when I think Miami, I sure as hell don't think Ohio.

Don't blame Miami for the "Miami of Ohio." That tag gets stuck on them by the commentators and such.

My Miami U. is much older than the Miami down in Florida.

...the city isn't. I doubt anyone out of that state equates Miami with Ohio. It's not Miami, just like Paris, Texas isn't Paris.

I wanted to see Miami of Ohio play Northern Illinois. I've seen both play and I think, personally, that NIU might be the better team. They really got shafted, not even getting a chance at a bowl game.

FYI: Miami University was founded in 1809.

The city of Miami, FL, was incoporated in 1896.

So, it really should be "Miami of Florida."

Anyway...

I think you misinterpreted. There is no Miami city in Ohio. I hate schools with names that have nothing to do with their actual location. It confuses things for no reason. All those "Tech" and "State" and "A&M" schools...

Wow. A blanket condemnation of Yale, Harvard, Purdue, Stanford, Northwestern...

I'm sure if the founders of Miami had opted to call it "Oxford University" many would think that a bit pretentious, no?

Jim

PS. Hey Pig..you live 10 min from Miami? My family's just 10 miles or so north of Oxford, in Indiana...

Sure, burn 'em all. What's more important, higher education, or having each university's name clearly relate to it's location? I think the answer's pretty obvious, here...

The "Miami of Ohio" phrase could easily be knocked out of existence if the announcers, pundits, et al. would just refer to it as "Miami U." They can call the Florida U of Miami "Miami" for all I care. But you're right, "Miami of Ohio" is not a phrase that rolls trippingly off the tongue...

After yet another spectacular performance, Big Ben's career has ended. I do think he'll be a first round pick, I'm not sure he'll be a top 5 or top 10 pick, however. Need will play a big factor in where he's taken.

I wish I could create a time machine, go back, and accurately "predict" all of the winners for these games!
