When billionaire Simon Stagg sent adventurer Rex Mason, boyfriend of Stagg's daughter Sapphire, to Egypt to retrieve the priceless Orb of Ra from a pyramid, he never expected him to return. Stagg's henchman, Java, attacked Mason, leaving him for dead. But Rex fell into a hidden chamber and was exposed to the Orb, whose radiation changed Mason into the freakish shape-shifting element man Metamorpho.
Manipulated by Stagg, Metamorpho did many tasks for the corrupt billionaire while also battling Java for the affections of Sapphire Stagg, but Sapphire would have no other man than Rex Mason, whom she eventually married.
Metamorpho joined the first Outsiders group and died on one of their missions. However, during Earth's invasion by the alien Dominators, he was revived when the Dominion dropped a "Gene Bomb" on Earth. An amnesiac Metamorpho joined Justice League Europe, and later learned that Sapphire had remarried after his supposed death.
Metamorpho went on to join the American branch of the Justice League (after declining a membership offer years earlier). When the JLA's outer-space headquarters was blown up, Rex formed his body into a makeshift spacecraft and safely returned the League members to Earth. The journey was more than Rex could endure and he was left as a comatose, inert mass.
Recently resurrected at S.T.A.R. Labs during the Titans' and Young Justice's battle with a Superman android, Rex agreed to join the Outsiders for the second time in his life. Presently suffering once more from amnesia, Mason hopes that, in time, he can reclaim all the aspects of the former life that he has been told is his.
