The thing you have to remember about Freaks is that the technology we take for granted wasn't there when this film was made. And the audience was very much horrified by the fact that real freaks were used instead of regular people in make-up. It's a no-brainer that this movie doesn't stand up to more recent films. But for it's time it packs one hell of a wallop to it's audience.

One thing that Browning meant to imply is that the freaks castrated the strong man. I don't care who you are, where you're from, or in what time period you live, that's some nasty scary shit.
