The only interesting thing you can do with classics is fucking with them. Anything else is redudant cock-sucking, one of the bad habits that make superhero comics stagnant. It's not like he modified the fucking comic and people can't read the original version anymore. Me, I applaud JMS' balls for daring to fuck with a pointless taboo... and get people talking while he's at it.

I read the issue in question just a few hours ago, and I don't see all the hubub. The only thing that creeps me out is that weird smile on Normans face while he's giving Gwen the ol'Goblin Glider. I'm glad Norman fucked Gwen, because he did what Parker never did and can gloat about it.

Anyone else notice that too many Nu-Marvel writers-and their fans-think getting people to talk about how much a book sucks is a positive thing?

It's perfectly fine by me when the people talking about how much a book sucks are the ones who are still stuck in the early 60s.

Wednesday said: I'm not just talking about the people in this thread, but on Amazing Spider-Man threads all over this internet. Seems a lot of the same guys who were saying Peter should get it on with MJ or the girl who lives in his building in Spider-Man 2 are the same ones who are saying Gwen Stacy having sex with Norm is skank.
Forgive me if this is nitpicking, but how is that example the same?
MJ was dating somebody else. She had no ties to the blonde chick whatsoever. It might have been untrue to himself, but there wouldn't have been anything wrong if he slept with her.

Fair enough again, but my point was the double standard, not whether it was right or wrong.
It seemed like you were using the double standard to excuse what Gwen "did"(man, the more we talk about this, the nerdier I feel).

And, you might have a point if the "stuck in the 60s" crowd was getting replaced by even more new fans.
But that isn't happening either.
So, what you end up with is alienated long-time fans and a failure to attract new readers.
And, yet, some people want to pretend this is a success.

In my examples, I meant "ideas" as doing new things with established characters/properties.

I don't think that way because I like "Nu-Marvel" (the only Marvel I'm interested in are the original 60's comics and some stuff from the 80's), I think like that because, fuck, it's fucking common sense. Like someone said in something I read sometime recently, apathy is the only bad reaction that a comic can get. Hating a comic with that kind of passion only fanboys know only generates debate around the series, which is just another way of making people aware the comic exists.

Doesn't justify bad/non-sensical writing. You may call many gigs of debate success. I call it cheap. A story's there to entertain, not to purposfully raise a ruckus.
By your standards Mxy, Liefeld is an excellent writer. Just keep that in mind.

I feel apathy towards Lefield. Besides, it would be stupid for me to seriously diss him since I haven't read anything he's done outside Hawk & Dove.
Now... that's a different kind of debate. If I start a thread called "Todd McFarlane sucks" odds are of people will say "Yep, he does." Maybe one person will expand on how much he sucks. Maybe someone else will say "You know, I kinda liked what he did in... but yep, he sucks." The thread wouldn't get past the first page. Not on-topic, at least.
Someone starts a thread about how Gwen Stacey is a slut... and it gets to page 8. People here are dissing JMS with a passion Lefield wishes he had against him, and some even defend him. I wouldn't know about this if it wasn't for this thread and the small buzz it's generated. I'm sure I'm not the only one. Doesn't mean I'll go running to buy the comic, but now I'm aware of it's existance and I even know what's it about, which is a lot more than I can say for 90% of the stuff Marvel and DC put out every month.

I'm just going off of your usual stuff. Majorital superiority. You know, like how you say less people believe in continuity out of all comic readers and therefore, we should disregard them. A majority of people hate his work, but I've seen threads with very dedicated people defend his stuff and call it good, making it go on for pages and pages and pages.
Now since you say anything that sparks this much dialogue is automatically good, it just seems like it kinda hexes that majority thing.

Now, Mxy, you're just being undemocratic. Democracy is a form of government under which the power to alter the basic laws and forms of government lies with the voting citizenry, referred to as "the people", and all decisions are made by representatives who act by their consent, as enforced by elections and the rule of law. In some cases, democracy is associated with nominal monarchy where the monarch has sharply limited powers, but it is more commonly associated with a republic.
The word democracy originates from the Greek δημοκρατíα from δημος meaning "the people", plus κρατειν meaning "to rule", and the suffix íα; the term therefore means "Rule by the People." The term is also sometimes used as a measurement of how much influence a people has over their government, as in how much democracy exists. Anarchism and communism (as in the final stage of social development according to Marxist theory) are social systems that employ a form of direct democracy, and have no state independent of the people themselves.
Clearly, comics should be ruled in this fashion. The majority want continuity. Silly Chilean.
I urge you all: do not vote for Mxy for Continuity President.
We will prevail!

Hey, hey, hey, when did I say anything about the quality of the comic? I was complimenting JMS for A) Having the balls of pissing off so many fanboys and 2) Getting people like you to spread the word about his work. I was saying he's pretty smart, that's all, I didn't say anything about his talent. I haven't said anything about the comic itself because I haven't read it, and, frankly, it doesn't look intresting at all to me.
And my argument against continuity was different: I don't recall saying a majority doesn't like it so it should be disregarded (though I might have), what I think I said is that there's a sector of the audience that doesn't NEED continuity in every fucking monthly comic, so it shouldn't ALWAYS be applied. Shouldn't be a rule, in other words.
