He never said a word about the quality of the comic. But the point he makes about so many of us suddenly being aware that it exists is good for the company from a marketing standpoint, regardless of the quality of the comic itself, which is why Quesada says that sorta stuff.
Dave: Gwen Stacy was Spider-Man's first girlfriend. Her father was a cop or some shit. Green Goblin threw her off a bridge. She was a slut. Now stop asking.

I'm Not Mister Mxypltk said: Hey, hey, hey, when did I say anything about the quality of the comic? I was complimenting JMS for A) Having the balls of pissing off so many fanboys and 2) Getting people like you to spread the word about his work. I was saying he's pretty smart, that's all, I didn't say anything about his talent. I haven't said anything about the comic itself because I haven't read it, and, frankly, it doesn't look intresting at all to me.
Half my statement was on the issue of writing talent and the fact that you were applauding his ability to get people to respond.
If I was supposed to disect that, you should be a bit more implicative.
And I also reitterate for sake of...Ahem..Continuity--That your idea of "pretty smart" seemingly implies bad writing.
ANEEweigh! On to formality!
Quote:
And my argument against continuity was different: I don't recall saying a majority doesn't like it so it should be disregarded (though I might have), what I think I said is that there's a sector of the audience that doesn't NEED continuity in every fucking monthly comic, so it shouldn't ALWAYS be applied. Shouldn't be a rule, in other words.
Yes you did. No you didn't. If that second part was the case, then it was another clarification problem you had.
Everytime you'd make an isolated comment on continuity, you'd get all snarky and caricaturize a (and you'd stress) small number of "fanboys" and how they complain that their voice matters more and continuity is God or whatever. And even in that argument we had, you said something along the lines of 'they're just a smaller quotient anyway, so why deal with them'.

Eventually, it's gonna degenerate. You make a singular splash, but the ripples will eventually end and the readers won't want to put up with cheap ass writing from the writer after that.
You know that saying about all publicity being good publicity? Not necessarily true.

Sorry, I didn't respond to this, but, frankfly, I don't read much... Quote:
the G-man said: And, you might have a point if the "stuck in the 60s" crowd was getting replaced by even more new fans.
But that isn't happening either.
How does that idea negate my point? Are we supposed to cater only to the fans of old since there are, in your opinion, no new fans replacing them?
I got news for you, the "stuck in the 60s" crowd does not represent all of the old-timers reading comics. There are a lot of people who have been reading Spider-Man from the very start that actually like this story and like JMS.
I can't say I've been reading since the 60's, but I have been reading for quite a while, and I think JMS is a breath of fresh air. The guy is helping put The Amazing Spider-Man back on the map.
Quote:
the G-man said: So, what you end up with is alienated long-time fans and a failure to attract new readers.
And, yet, some people want to pretend this is a success.
More news: this isn't keeping away new readers. You want to find that culprit, look to the people who insist comic books should stay in the past while the rest of the world has moved on. The readership has increased since JMS took over. People are consistently reading his run, and people are consistently buying his run. Readers are interested. That's the measure of a comic book's success, not whether or not it falls in line with every ideal.
Let me ask you two questions:
1. Have you been reading Spider-Man on a regular basis?
2. Did you read this issue?

You can argue that "nothing succeeeds like success."
However, making a comic book, or anything, profitable in the short term, at the expense of sustained or long term growth, is only a "good thing" if you don't care about the quality of the item in the future.
It's one thing to be against being "stuck in the 60s." It's another to applaud writers who do serious, and perhaps permanent, damage to longstanding appealing aspects of a character in order to generate short term interest.
Basically, you're advocating strip-mining.

No.
So what you are saying is: You would condone any piece of writing that outraged people no matter what kind of effort was put into it? Even if the book is wall to wall bad stories yet they still shock (because they breach "useless taboos") and annoy/outrage and have any kind of attention drawn to it for an alotted period of time?

To me, this basis on judging the worthiness of reading a book (and lets face it, your "lack of apathy" angle is a two way street for percieved quality--Yes quality--Of the book) just because it got any response facilitates further motivation for constant outrageous storylines simply because they're outrageous.
Now you say that you're stated perception of what he did and how good he did it are separate, but from what you say, it just seems inter-related is all. But if this wasn't your intention, I'll just stop now.

"Lance" being Lancelot...
BTW, Dave, there is no standard spelling of Guenevere's name. Standardization of spelling came centuries after the Arthurian romances were written -- not until the 17th century, in fact, when widespread printing became available.

I'm not condoning it. I'm saying it works. The guy wanted to get people to notice the comic: mission accomplished. Plus, even if it sucks, it's not such a big deal. As long as I don't read the piece of crap I don't mind the fact that it exists. Being outraged by a comic book is not only stupid (unless it's condoning rape or something like that), it also helps raise the sales of the comic itself.
