I don't doubt that Robin's daddy could be dyin', but I wouldn't put it past Meltzer and co. or DC to give us a red herring for a cover.

Yeah, yeah, Spoiler buys it in the 'Snore Games' and Jack Drake buys it in IC. Them Bat-characters gotta develop them dark anxious psyches, even the nice ones.

This isn't exactly a huge news flash. If DC had any balls, Jimmy Olsen would be a bloody smear as well.

I just wish Aunt Harriet was in current continuity, so she could get the axe as well.

This may have been covered before, but am I the only one who thinks the real point of this series is to bring back certain elements of the "classic" DC universe?

I'm thinking specifically of a greater emphasis on secret IDs in general and,in the case of Batman, the return of Robin as Bruce Wayne's orphaned "ward."

I also suspect that somehow this book ends with a mind-wiped Lois and a return to that status quo also.

Quite possible. The need for secret IDs and the lengths the heroes have gone to to try and keep their IDs a secret has definitely been one of the major issues of the series.

I'd actually like to see the characters forced to take on new IDs. Change up the status quo a bit. Have them have to adjust to events in this series.

Why can't Superman disguise himself as a blond guy, just as an example. I doubt it would happen, but I think it would be a very logical, and progressive move. Fuck some trademarks and worrying about film and tv tie ins.

BIG SPOILERS - Millarworld has a synopsis of the next issue written by a poster, here: http://www.millarworld.net/index.php?showtopic=29469&st=1600

Some interesting developments with Boomerang's son, and the issue of who his actual father/mother is.

I'm thinking Captain Boomerang had a kid with the Jesse Quick or somebody. Maybe. I'm not sure.

So, is Sir Justin's sword something special?

Looked like a set up (Robin's dad finding a gun & message to defend himself)

Not many female speedsters in the DCU old enough to have a kid (is there any?) So could Flash be the real father?

The whole Firestorm thing happened fast. Wasn't Ronnie already dead before the new Firestorm series started though?

Boomerang's dialogue seems to indicate that he is still the father.

Yeah. Seems like this was more of and editorial decree than something that naturally evolved from the story. Consider that the IC tie in issue hit the stands this week that reveals that Ronnie is dead.

If Flash were the real father that would abate the explanation of the kid's natural talent with boomerangs.

Yep, but I figure it's much more logical to conclude that the kid is the son of Boomerang and a female speedster.

Was there ever a female speedster, even in a one-book appearance, during the Barry Allen run (pun intended)?

Hey, what if Boomerang had sex with Kid Flash?

I mean, rape is kosher so pedophilia isn't that much of a stretch, right?

Since this series has a ton of mudding up the silver-age waters, I'd guess Barry is the father, but Boomerang didn't know it. Boomerang probably had his brain mucked with, too. I'd guess all of Barry's rogues did, they were mostly morons back then.

The Russian speedsters are also somewhat recent, though.

There was one female speedster who appeared in a single Flash story in the 1970s who gained her speed and lost it in the same story. Now that's a good possibility.

UPDATE: Well, maybe not so much:

http://www.hyperborea.org/flash/ladies.html#msflash

But that Joanie Swift might work... or even Doralla Kon.

I just quickly flipped through the story featuring Ms. Flash: "How to Prevent a Flash" from FIVE STAR SUPER-HERO SPECTACULAR (a one-shot from 1977).

It's interesting. The story begins with a recap of Barry Allen's origin story, in which a cabinet full of chemicals is struck by lightning and both lightning and chemicals hit him.

Then it shows how Barry's longtime lab assistant, Patty Spivot (who was apparently around at least since Barry gained his super-speed, according to The Life Story of the Flash), undergoes a duplicate accident as the one Barry (and Wally after him) had, though because there were so many newer chemicals adopted in the years since then, it wasn't an exact duplication. Because of this discrepancy Patty's super-speed powers came with unexpected side-effects, such as causing the creation of poisonous gases from water.

Then at the end it is revealed that Barry saved her from the accident with the chemicals and just IMAGINED the above scenario in the split-second it took for him to do so.

But it makes me think...

Remember how eerily similar Wally West's origin was to Barry Allen's? And that it happened in the very same place? Well, the fact that it happened a THIRD time in the SAME PLACE with Patty Spivot just seems too improbable to be a coincidence to me. I'm thinking Barry must have unconsciously influenced the events to occur, first to make Wally West a fellow super-speedster (the only one he was aware of at that time) and then almost made Patty Spivot a female super-speedster. A Secret Origins Annual from the 1980s actually hinted that Wally's origin was somehow directed by the unconscious powers of Barry Allen, who always had stranger super-speed powers than any of the other speedsters, such as the ability to completely control his molecular structure.

So getting back to the theme of I.C. -- that is, the JLA's removal of memories of several super-villains.... I wonder if Patty Spivot really DID gain her powers, but because they were so dangerous Barry Allen had her hypnotized not only into forgetting them but into believing that she could only do that which a normal person could do? Maybe Barry called in Zatanna as a favour? He would've done it because he thought it was the best thing to do, all things considered, but perhaps others wouldn't think so.

And this brings us back to Captain Boomerang's son. Maybe the mother was Patty Spivot? It's interesting to note that the mother in that gossip rag was supposedly the Golden Glider, a blonde... Well, Patty Spivot resembles slightly Golden Glider, being a blonde herself.

Interesting things to think about, but it will probably have nothing to do with the real story behind I.C. in the end. Still, it's fun to speculate.
