I think many (not "all" for you nitpickers) reject the idea of God out of fear. Fear that they don't measure up or a recognition that they can't live up to God's standard of virtue because not only do they sin against God's law, but they fail to even meet thier the standards they set for themselves. As they approach thier death-bed they begin to realise that pretending won't save them. Alot like a person who talks about bravery as long as they aren't faced with an acctual danger situation.
