A couple of years ago, when I was staying in the Eritrean capital, Asmara, I went to the National Museums Office to organise some archaeology permits. As I wandered around the almost deserted building looking for the right office, I came across the unexpected sight of this gigantic skeleton, laid out against the wall along with several stuffed birds and animals. A group of cleaners were attempting to wash the tiles underneath the bones, treating the remains as they were just another piece of furniture.
After I had sorted out the paperwork I took some photographs of the whale. One of the professors caught me doing this and was absolutely furious with me for taking photographs in a Government building.
