No, it wasn't an out-and-out "comedy". It was a melodrama with comedic moments few and far between in some places. All the stuff between Giamatti and Virginia Madsen was certainly not meant to be comedic in any way. It was the interplay between those two actors which just fell flat for me. I saw no real connection, no "magic", and I just didn't buy it. When she did take him home with her, it seemed like nothing more than pity sex, though you know they were trying to make it out as more than that.

And the scene where Giamatti explains his love of pinot noir just seemed extremely pretentious to me. He was talking about the grapes but really talking about himself, and it came off as too obvious right away.

There wasn't anything intelligent about this movie. It had a few funny moments, but I'll never watch it again.
