Honestly, I didn't care enough for the Giamatti/Madsen plotline to remember it. I was thinking about Giamatti's relationship with Hayden Church, which is the central plotline of the movie in my opinion. The way that plotline ends confirms this is a dark comedy. I didn't find the Giamatti/Madsen plot interesting, but I don't think it's bad enough to hate the movie. It's just stuff thrown out there to fill the gaps and provide a romantic "happy ending", after everything else.
