until today.
This morning my mother had her bike stolen. It was locked to a bike rack outside the store she was in. She called the police and they said they she couldn't file a report for 24 to 48 hours. A couple hours she saw someone riding the bike and tried to get him to give her the bike but he refused, saying that he just bought it for a hundred dollars. She came home and called the cops, only to be disconnected twice. Once she got through, they said it was too late to do anything about it. Where she saw the bike was in a some what bad part of town on a busy street where the police are always around. My mother took me to the police station after this to ask why it took them so long to even talk to her. The whole time my mother was describing what happened, the woman at the desk was looking at her like she was crazy. She told her to fill out a complaint form. After we left, we drove around that part of town looking for the bike. During that time we saw three police cars potrolling the area, basically doing nothing.
My biggest complaints are the two day wait before she could file a report, the complete stupidity of the person on the phone, and watching the police cars drive around doing nothing.
Bike theft is one of the biggest crimes here in Eugene. It scares me to think that the police refuse to do anything about it. I have always respected cops and want to continue to, but I find it hard after what happened today.

rex, though i sympathize, i can't fault the cops here.
the waiting period is set up by design. imagine how many reports there'd be of stolen property if those it was missing from weren't even entirely sure it was stolen! say your little brother lent your playstation to a buddy of his. or your stolen wallet ends up being found back at work where you left it. or, in this case, say your aunt came over to borrow the bike, but no one was around to tell.
stuff like that happens all the time, and the waiting period is set up to help avoid confusing a real crime with a perceived crime.
unfortunately, there are only so many cops, and they don't know you or your situation well enough to be able to instantly judge if you're 1000% sure or 1000% crazy.
the cops driving around doing nothing could also be doing a lot more than you think. yeah, we've all seen cops loafing around or stopping for donuts or whatever -- but thats not an aspect limited to cops; look at construction workers and lifeguards and waitresses and the president and yourself. but, in this specific case, you don't know if they were really lazing around or actually on a patrol of sorts.
what i can agree with you on is someone acting rudely while your mother explains herself in person or on the phone. though there's certainly an explanation, there's simply no excuse for that, and its a trait unfortuantely all too common for various receptionists.

I can almost agree with that but I can't forgive them for hanging up twice. That was just wrong. If they had their shit together we would probably have the bike and criminal would be in jail right now.

Cops don't give a fuck about "pety" theft. My friend's Mom was without a home for a while so he had to store his musical equiptment at another friend's house instead. Someone broke in and methodically stole pretty much everything. Guitars, amplifiers, his whole drum set, a mixer, a couple microphones... EVERYTHING. Thousands of dollars. The cops said since they didn't have any idea who took it, they were pretty much out of luck.
To make it worse, it was someone who goes to the same college as us. We found a flyer in the hall advertising Andrew's drumset but by the time Andrew got ahold of the guy, the set was already sold for $500.
aNDREW'S Bicycle was also stolen out of my back yard.

We just had our garage broken into. Two bikes were stolen. I've had it. From now on, anytime I see a hippie or hobo riding a bike that is too expensive for them to buy, I'm confronting them. If I see someone walking two bikes, (which I see almost daily) I'm going to confront them.
The cop who took our report said that it was either a "transient" or kids on meth. I'm seriously sick of all this bullshit. Fucking parents should know where there fucked up kids are.
There's a mission here that houses worthless sub-humans. They have well over a thousand bikes there, but they don't let cops search them to see if any were stolen. I am going to change that. This bullshit has to end.

It sounds like the institutional leftism of Eugene has pretty much crippled the cops there.
I'd be careful confronting someone about this. In a city like Eugene, the odds are pretty good that the cops and courts, if not the public, would assume you're wrongfully targeting some poor homeless victim of society with your "hate."

BTW I had a bike stolen from my garage in a white middle class suburb in Orange County CA, one of the most conservative places in the country. The cops expressed sympathy and I never heard from them again.

Your point is not invalid, jay.
However, you must also concede that the police in any community are controlled in some part by the politics of the people who supervise them.
Police in any city are going to not prioritize a stolen bike, that's true. However, it ignores reality to pretend that a city's homeless policies are not going to affect how the police, or the courts, handle petty crimes by the homeless.
