A 30-year-old teaching intern has been arrested after police found her with a 16-year-old male student in her car as the woman's toddler was strapped into a car seat in the back.

Margaret De Barraicua and the student are believed to have been having "an ongoing consensual sexual relationship for several months," Sacramento police spokesman Sgt. Justin Risley said.



The investigation began Saturday when police received a report of a car parked behind an elementary school, Risley said. Officers found the windows of the car steamed up and could see two people moving inside, he said.

When the car door opened, officers found De Barraicua, the teenager and the teacher's 2-year-old child, Risley said.

The teenager was in a language and arts class that De Barraicua has taught since September, when she started her paid internship at McClatchy High School.

De Barraicua, who is married, was placed on paid administrative leave Tuesday while the investigation is ongoing, said Maria Lopez, a spokeswoman for the Sacramento City Unified School District. The toddler was released to De Barraicua's husband.

Before the internship, De Barraicua worked in the district for about two years as a substitute teacher. Interns are required to undergo the same background checks as credentialed teachers.

Sacramento police don't believe De Barraicua has victimized other students, Risley said.

"We think this is an isolated incident," he said.

De Barraicua did not return a telephone call to her home Wednesday.

She is one of several female teachers across the nation accused of having illegal sexual relationships with male students.

A Braxton County middle school teacher is in police custody after allegedly confessing to sexual misconduct with five of her students.

Toni Lynn Woods, 37, of Strange Creek was arrested Wednesday on eight counts of sexual assault.

State Police said several students reported they had been treated or touched inappropriately.

In the criminal compliant filed against Woods, she admitted she had sexual intercourse with three students a total of four times.

She also admitted to performing oral sex on two different juveniles a total of four times.

Braxton County Superintendent Carolyn Long wouldn't comment on the allegations, saying it's a personnel issue. But she said district officials take allegations of abuse seriously.

"This school system acts immediately," Long said, "and follows through any way they can to see that that risk is removed."

Woods was being held in the Central Regional Jail in Sutton on $100,000 bond.

Braxton County Prosecutor William C. Martin said the State Police investigation began when a family member of one of the children complained.

Martin said Woods resigned her job as a sixth grade teacher and permanently surrendered her teaching certificate.

HONEOYE NY — A Honeoye man and his 14-year-old son have filed a notice of claim for unspecified damages against the Honeoye Central School District and a female teacher accused of displaying an inappropriate romantic interest in the teen.

The legal document filed last week accuses Grace M. Wood, 40, a tenured music teacher in the district, of writing unsolicited notes and e-mails to the youth and of inviting him to dine with her and join her at theatrical events and shopping ventures off school grounds.

District Superintendent William Schofield said on Monday that Wood recently returned to her regular teaching schedule after being placed on paid leave for about two months while the district investigated the allegations.

"We've conducted a thorough investigation and found nothing at all wrong," said Schofield. "We see no substance to the claim whatsoever, and we're going to actively dispute it."

As a result of the allegations and the investigation, however, the school recently adopted a written policy on staff-student interactions, Schofield said.

According to the legal claim, Wood began writing the youth notes and sending him unsolicited gifts in December 2004.

Included in the legal claim is an excerpt from a Christmas card Wood allegedly sent the youth alluding to "knowing looks, smiles, late jazz nights ... I love every moment we are together even if all is quiet and we are just in the same place. ... Too much feeling for words. Love. Thanks!"

The claim seeks unspecified monetary damages and charges that the youth, who is still a student in the district, "has suffered emotionally from these incidents, and still feels angry, humiliated, betrayed, embarrassed, and gets physically upset and nauseous when he sees Wood.

Other than stating that a school investigation found the charges without merit and acknowledging that the incident has prompted the district to implement a strict policy against teacher-student fraternization on a romantic level, Schofield declined to comment further on the legal claim.

"I can confirm that this legal issue has been raised, but I can't say anything further because this is a personnel issue," Schofield said. "We did implement a policy prohibiting interaction (between teachers and students) through e-mail or personal contact beyond the classroom."

A guidance counselor at a Manhattan high school is in trouble for having an affair with one of her students, officials said yesterday - the second sex scandal to rock the school this week.

Samantha Solomon, 29, was booted from the High School for Health Professions and Human Services after school bosses learned she was having sex with a teenage boy, according to the Education Department.



But Solomon, who was reassigned to desk duty last month, vehemently denied any wrongdoing and attributed the accusations to rumors gone wild.

"I never had a sexual relationship with a student ever," she told the Daily News last night. "I'm a good person, a nice person. I never signed anything saying I did that."

Solomon is set to meet tomorrow to discuss "disciplinary action" with educrats, who are seeking to fire her, said Education Department spokesman Keith Kalb.

Solomon said she had met with the student, currently a senior, to discuss college possibilities. "She did not do anything that was illegal or immoral," said her mother, Donna Solomon. "She's very pretty and very close with all the students."

The accusations were leveled as students and staffers reeled from a report charging that a shy basketball star got social studies teacher Rhianna Ellis pregnant.

Ellis, 24, delivered a healthy baby in February after a 10-month tryst with an 18-year-old student who graduated in June, officials said.



Students and staffers at the school, on E. 15th St. in Gramercy Park, identified the boy toy as Cesar Pozo, a good athlete who was popular with classmates.

Ellis was chummy with students, showing up at a sweet-16 party last year where she slow-danced with Pozo, and frequently letting kids skip class, students said.

"She was a very friendly person," said senior Brandon Simms, 18.

Brooklyn middle-school teacher - a married mother of three - was arrested yesterday on sex-abuse charges, becoming the third female educator nabbed in a week for alleged shenanigans with male students.

Joanna Hernandez, 27, was collared after allegedly embracing and kissing a 15- year-old eighth-grader in an empty classroom inside IS 55 in Brownsville nearly a week ago. She was charged with misdemeanor sexual abuse and endangering the welfare of a child.

Police said a fellow teacher saw Hernandez and the boy lip-locked on April 12 and told the principal, who went to cops and the district superintendent.

Hernandez was escorted out of the school the same day and reassigned to desk duty at a regional office, according to the Department of Education. It was not clear why more than a week passed before she turned herself in to cops.

She pleaded not guilty at her night-court arraignment — attended by her mother, father and husband — and was released without bail.

The judge issued an order of protection to keep her away from the boy.

Students said the teen in question was "the oldest kid in school" and he routinely stayed late for extra help from Hernandez, who has been at IS 55 since 1999 and is paid $45,583 a year.
