A former high school social studies teacher on Tuesday reached a plea deal on charges that she had sex with one of her students.

Nicole Barnhart, 35, is accused of having sex with a 16-year-old male student at Ponderosa High School in Parker. She was arrested in March.

Barnhart has accepted the plea offer made by prosecutors and will plead guilty to felony sexual assault on a child and to felony criminal attempt to commit sexual assault on a child.

As part of her plea agreement, Barnhart will be sentenced to two years in prison and have at least 10 years of intense supervised probation. She will also have to register as a sex offender.

Barnhart will officially enter the plea on Jan. 3 in Douglas County and will remain in custody until that time. Sentencing will be about eight weeks after the plea.

The investigation had revealed that Barnhart, who is married, had sexual relations with the boy on more than one occasion, according to the Douglas County Sheriff's Department.



Friends of the boy said that he told them he had been having a sexual relationship with the teacher for at least two weeks and was text-messaging her. They said he told them that he thought the teacher was "hot" and he had a crush on her.

Barnhart was hired in the Douglas County School District in 1995 and had been a teacher at Ponderosa High School since August 2002.

She resigned after her arrest.

A 26-year-old former teacher from Kentucky who reportedly fled that state with a teenage student with whom she had a romantic relationship has been apprehended in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, authorities said.



On Tuesday night, Mexican authorities arrested Angela Comer after finding her at a Nuevo Laredo hotel with the 14-year-old boy and Comer's toddler son.

Mexican officials turned them over to officers with U.S. Customs and Border Protection at the Laredo International Bridge. Comer was taken to a hospital for observation and examination and booked Wednesday morning into the Webb County Jail, said Rene Salinas, spokesman for the FBI in San Antonio.

The 14-year-old was placed in protective custody by the Laredo Police Department, and the 4-year-old was taken into custody by Texas Child Protective Services, the FBI said.

Officers with the Tompkinsville, Ky., Police Department were to return them to Kentucky, Tompkinsville Police Chief Dale Ford said. Comer is charged with custodial interference.

Ford said the teen lives with his grandmother in Tompkinsville, population 3,000, and was last seen about 10:30 p.m. Friday when he arrived home and went to bed. The woman reported the teen missing Saturday morning, Ford said.

"(The grandmother) went to get her purse, and she couldn't find it," Ford said. "She went to his room to see if he knew where it was, and there were pillows under the sheets. He just took his clothes, slipped out, and slipped away."

Comer and her 4-year-old son, who had been staying elsewhere, turned up missing around the same time, Ford said. Comer was scheduled for a hearing Tuesday in Kentucky on a separate charge of custodial interference involving the same teen, Ford said.

He added that Comer also was wanted on a federal warrant for unlawful flight to avoid prosecution.

The teen was once Comer's student. Comer, also known as Angela Combs, had been an eighth-grade teacher at Monroe County Middle School for about 11/2 years. She resigned in early November, said Kevin Cloyd, principal of the 510-student school.

Ford said investigators believe that Comer, who was going through a divorce, had a romantic relationship with the teen.

"It would appear that way," Ford said. "We're still early in the investigation, but we have a lot of evidence that was on a computer, chat lines and such that will be brought out later."

Investigators also have determined Comer may have stayed at the teen's home without his grandmother knowing.

"She appears to have slipped in and out," Ford said.

Once the teen was linked to Comer, officers issued an alert to area agencies and requested assistance from the FBI. Agents got leads that she and the boy were in Nuevo Laredo, and asked Mexican officials to canvas hotels there for them, leading to their capture.

The FBI in Kentucky will review the case with federal prosecutors to determine what, if any, federal charges should be filed against Comer, according to the FBI.

Observers quickly noted the similarity of this case to the one involving Mary Kay Letourneau. A suburban Seattle elementary school teacher and married mother of four, Letourneau had a sexual relationship with one of her sixth-grade students in the 1990s, and he fathered two more children with her.

Letourneau served 71/2 years in prison, after which the couple married last May.

Other similar cases have been reported around the country.

"There seems to be an epidemic of that," Ford said. "It's bothering the community because we entrust our children to these teachers. That's the biggest kick. If they're not safe at school with a teacher, where are they safe?"

The Long Island teen accusing a Hamptons school psychologist of seducing him — while he was dating the shrink's daughter — enjoyed the alleged sex romps with the older vixen, his pals said yesterday.



The 16-year-old victim, whose name is being withheld due to his status as a rape victim, bragged of the exploits with alleged rapist Diane DeMartini-Scully, 45, friends told the Post.

"The law says he's a victim, but he sure didn't act like one," said confidant Jason James, 18. "He was proud of himself for getting with both the mom and the daughter."


The victim, a neighbor of the shrink, even slept over at DeMartini-Scully's Mattituck home when the couple was suffering marital trouble.

"He would go from one bedroom to the next when he stayed over," said James. "It seemed kind of weird to me, but he was enjoying it."

DeMartini-Scully, who was a shrink at the posh East Hampton Middle School, allegedly seduced the victim while he was dating her 13-year-old daughter.

"The daughter didn't know anything, but the mom knew he was sleeping with her daughter," said Melissa Miller, 25, the victim's friend. "I don't know why anybody would do that to their child. It's sick."

Police say an E.B. Morse Elementary School teacher in Laurens was arrested Friday and charged with two counts of criminal sexual conduct with a minor after a parent claimed the woman had sex with one of her 11-year-old students.

Police say the married teacher had at least three sexual encounters with her student since Christmas. In a statement to police, the student said they "had sex on her desk" at one time, and another time, there were about "six other children in the classroom."

Police Chief Robin Morse says that 36-year-old Wendie A. Schweikert of Belton resigned from her teaching position at EB Morse Elementary School around noon. He says she had been an employee of the school district for nine years.


Morse says Schweikert is accused of having sex with the pupil at the school. He says Schweikert had no criminal history and no prior complaints were made against her.

Khemwatie Bedessie, 37, repeatedly abused the preschooler at Veda's Learning Center in South Ozone Park, authorities charged.

The abuse stopped only a few days ago, when the child developed a rash and tried to describe to his mother what had happened to him, police sources said.

Parents with children from the center were stunned by the allegations yesterday.

The victim was allegedly abused on at least three occasions since January inside the 128th St. facility. The abuse occurred early in the morning when few people were around, sources said.

In the most shocking instance, Bedessie allegedly took him into the bathroom and tried to have sex with him, a law enforcement source said.

Police sources said Bedessie confessed yesterday to Queens sex abuse squad investigators and made a videotaped statement to prosecutors. A native of Guyana, Bedessie had worked for four years at the day care center, officials said.

She faces one count of first-degree rape and six counts of sexual abuse and endangering the welfare of a child.

Charges against a Tampa teacher who had sex with a 14-year-old middle-school student have been dropped in one of the two counties where the incidents occurred.

Debra Lafave, 25, was charged in Marion County with lewd and lascivious battery on a child and lewd and lascivious exhibition for having sex with the now 16-year-old boy in a sport utility vehicle.

As part of a plea deal, she is already serving seven years probation and three years house arrest for similar offenses in Hillsborough County for having sex with him in a classroom and her house.

But the state attorney's office in Marion County dropped the charges there on Tuesday after a judge rejected a similar plea deal that would have allowed Lafave to again avoid going to trial — and to prison. Because the boy's family doesn't want him to testify, the prosecution didn't have enough evidence to present its case.

"I believe my mental illness had a lot to do with my actions," Lafave said in a news conference Tuesday with defense attorney John Fitzgibbons, referring to bipolar disorder. "I offer my deepest apology. I am very remorseful. I want the world to see that bipolar is real."




Asked whether she thought men charged with sex crimes against children were handled more harshly by the legal system than women, Lafave said she didn't.

"I don't think there is a double standard," she said. "I think we should all check the statistics."

Even though the charges have been dropped in Marion County, Lafave will still serve out the terms of the plea deal accepted by the Hillsborough County judge.

In today's sexually permissive school environment, just how prevalent is the teacher-student sex problem?

Get ready for a shock. According to a major 2004 study commissioned by the U.S. Department of Education – the most in-depth investigation to date – nearly 10 percent of U.S. public school students have been targeted with unwanted sexual attention by school employees.

Titled "Educator Sexual Misconduct: A Synthesis of Existing Literature," the report says the mistreatment of students ranges from sexual comments to rape. In fact, says the study's author Charol Shakeshaft, professor of educational administration at Hofstra University in Hempstead, N.Y., the scope of the school-sex problem appears to far exceed the clergy-abuse scandal that has recently rocked the Roman Catholic Church.

Comparing the incidence of sexual misconduct in schools with the Catholic Church scandal, Shakeshaft notes that a recent study by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops concluded 10,667 young people were sexually mistreated by priests between 1950 and 2002.

In contrast, she extrapolates from a national survey conducted for the American Association of University Women Educational Foundation in 2000 that roughly 290,000 students experienced some sort of physical sexual abuse by a public school employee between 1991 and 2000.

The figures suggest "the physical sexual abuse of students in schools is likely more than 100 times the abuse by priests," said Shakeshaft, according to Education Week.

Indeed, more than 4.5 million students are subject to sexual misconduct by an employee of a school sometime between kindergarten and 12th grade, says the report.

Recently, there has been a seeming explosion in a special type of teacher sexual abuse – female teachers having sex with underage teenage boys, who as a rule are willing participants in the sex.

"Generally the male doesn't feel victimized," said Steven B. Blum, a consulting psychologist to a sex offender program in Nebraska. "A lot of teenage boys would see that as their lucky day," he told the Los Angeles Times.

Lucky day? What about the next day, and the next year and beyond? Experts say sexually victimized boys experience later difficulty in developing age-appropriate relationships and gravitate toward pornography and one-night stands. They are also more likely as adults to suffer depression, anxiety and drug addiction.

The 16-year-old victim of Margaret De Barraicua, a 30-year-old California teacher who pleaded guilty to four counts of statutory rape, did not consider it his "lucky day."

"I'm not the same boy," the boy said in a letter read in court in Sacramento. "At school I became the center of attention. Everyone knew my name." But the boy was so traumatized, his mother wrote in a letter read in court, that "his hair is falling out."

And the father of a Colorado boy molested by Silvia Johnson – who held drug-alcohol-and-sex parties at her home with teenaged schoolboys to be "cool" – told the court the 40-year-old woman "took away my best friend, my hunting buddy. I can't have him back now. He is gone."

Many theories and factors are advanced to explain the major upsurge in illegal teacher-student sexual relationships, including:

Two-breadwinner families mean children have more unsupervised time to be preyed upon.

Cell-phone technology, text messaging and e-mail afford opportunities for teachers and students to communicate privately that didn't exist a generation ago.

The explosion of hardcore pornography, especially online, has resulted in the exposure of children to graphic sexual images to a far greater degree than at any time in history.
But overshadowing virtually all explanations for adult-child sex is the simple fact that the perpetrators – and in the case of female offenders having sex with underage boys, the victims as well – often don't think there is anything wrong with what they are doing.

Essentially, the rationale is: Consensual sex doesn't kill, injure or rob anyone, so where's the victim? Why is "love" (remember Letourneau's book, "Only One Crime, Love") even a crime at all?

There's new information in the case of the Virginia high school teacher accused of having sex with two of her special education students.

9News has learned Bonnie Sue Davis was caught inside the home of one of the boys involved in the allegations. They were discovered by the mother of the other teenager. We want to make very clear, no sexual activity was witnessed. There was no drinking nor drugs. Everyone was fully clothed.

Nevertheless, 35-year-old Bonnie Davis was in a darkened bedroom with two of her male students, ages 14 and 15, on a Friday night in February. The mother of the 14-year-old, looking for her son, found him at the 15-year-old's home with their teacher.

That conduct alone is a violation of Spotsylvania County, Virginia school policy. But Davis now faces far more serious allegations: six counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor; two counts of sodomy and one charge of having sex with a 14-year-old. Her attorney says those charges are false.

Police brought the charges last week, more than a month after the parents of one of the boys informed the principal at Courtland High School they had heard one of the boys say the other boy was "going with a teacher."

According to school officials, Principal Michael Bedwell took that to mean the student had a crush on his teacher and did not constitute an allegation of sex. At Courtland, Bedwell interviewed the students and the teacher, all of whom denied any improper behavior.

The parents finally turned to a private investigator, who says he discovered Davis had given the two boys gifts and money. The investigator turned to Spotsylvania County's Commonwealth's Attorney William Neely after he became convinced the allegations were truthful. It was only after Neely became involved one week later that the sheriff's office announced the arrest of Bonnie Sue Davis.

The question is, should sheriff's office have been notified a full month earlier by the principal at Courtland? School officials contend the Principal conducted a proper inquiry into what he perceived as a non-sexual allegation.

TAMPA - Two former Hillsborough County middle school teachers are facing a state inquiry after students said they saw them having sex in a classroom during school hours.

Two students reported watching the Coleman Middle School teachers May 22 through a hole in a paper used to cover a classroom window. One of the teachers later tried to get a student to keep quiet about the incident, school officials said.

In detail, the students described to school officials how they saw Spanish teacher Frances Sepulveda, 30, and coach Bryant Wilburn, 29, having sex inside a locked classroom.

One student said he waited outside for five minutes. When Sepulveda opened the door, Wilburn exited.

Both teachers initially denied the claims of misconduct. But they later admitted having sex in the classroom on one or two occasions during school hours, according to the district report. Both teachers resigned a day before the school year ended on May 25, according to a letter sent home to Coleman parents.

It noted only that the teachers resigned "after they were interviewed about unprofessional conduct on campus."

"No students were directly involved and no students were harmed or endangered in any way," Coleman principal Michael Hoskinson wrote.

Hillsborough schools spokesman Stephen Hegarty said the resignations were "the best results that we could have hoped for."

"Not only is their job in Hillsborough County over with," he said, ''but there's a question about their certification."

Hegarty said school officials are sending information about the incident to state officials, who could look into whether Sepulveda and Wilburn should be allowed to teach in any of Florida's public schools.

Both teachers were in good standing before the incident, Hegarty said. Sepulveda had worked for the school district for more than seven years, and Wilburn had more than five years in the system.

"I'm embarrassed by the incident," Wilburn said when contacted Wednesday. "Everything is not what it seems."

Sepulveda could not be reached for comment. Public records show she was married in February to another man.

Sepulveda tried to keep the students from reporting what they saw, according to the report. It said she pulled a student who reportedly witnessed the act out of her next class.

The student said Sepulveda told her to keep quiet about what she saw. But she asked to call her mother and eventually told the principal.

A former middle school band teacher admitted she had sexual contact with six male students and entered a guilty plea one day before her trial was scheduled to start.

Laura L. Findlay, 32, pleaded guilty Thursday in Saginaw County Circuit Court to 22 counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct with a person younger than 16.



Under an agreement with prosecutors, she faces at least seven years in prison at sentencing Aug. 17, though the judge could sentence her to up to life in prison. Defense lawyer James F. Piazza said his client might withdraw her plea if the sentence exceeds seven years.

Prosecutors say Findlay had sexual contact with male students from Ricker Middle School in Buena Vista Township over five months in 2004-2005. She had taught at the school for seven years.

Assistant prosecutor James T. Borchard said the students and their parents agreed with the plea deal.
