A story out of Texas about an ex-beauty contestant/teacher accused of sex with a male student is raising questions.

Amy McElhenney, 25, is a former Miss Texas contestant who was teaching at a Carrollton, Texas high school.

McElhenney was arrested May 25 and charged with having an improper relationship with a student. The Spanish teacher and former Miss Texas contestant faces up to 20 years in prison, if convicted.

McElhenney's arrest was for allegedly having sex with an 18-year-old student and it has raised questions about the age constraints of the state's three-year-old law criminalizing student-teacher sexual relationships.

But some lawmakers say the Hebron High School student's status as a legal adult should exempt McElhenney from the felony charge. State Rep. Helen Giddings, D-Dallas, wrote the Texas law in 2003 that criminalizes sex between educators and students.

But she said she wanted the law to apply only to students 17 and younger — uncomfortable with making sex between two legal, consenting adults a felony.

But other legislators added amendments to Giddings' bill when it reached the floor of the House, making it illegal for educators to have sexual relationships with students of any age.

Rep. Warren Chisum, R-Pampa, proposed dropping the age limit, arguing that teachers wield a power over students that diminishes the pupils' ability to consent.

Neither McElhenney nor her attorney could immediately be reached for comment.

The woman's arrest attracted national media interest — which did not surprise Carrollton police Sgt. Pat Murphy, who cited the sensational elements of the case.

"It's about what I expected for what this case is," Murphy said of the media blitz. "You've got a teacher that was a beauty pageant contestant that is accused of having sex with a student."

But McElhenney's arrest also prompted debates around the nation concerning Texas' law and the criminality of student-teacher relationships when the pupil is a legal adult.

Dallas lawyer Jim Moore said he felt the age issue would make jurors less likely to sentence a defendant to the 20-year prison term for an alleged relationship with a consenting adult. Moore represents a Garland school district teacher accused of having such a relationship in 2005.

That's what steamy perv teacher Debra LaFave tells NBC's Matt Lauer about the "very flirtatious" middle-school student she first infamously seduced on her classroom couch in Florida in 2004.

In her first TV sit-down, set to air tomorrow on NBC, the buxom, bottle-blond babe, now 25, admits to Lauer that she "crossed the line that never should have been crossed."

But "I think he just became very flirtatious, and you gotta remember that at that period . . . in my life, I didn't feel like an adult. I was crashing fast," says the disgraced instructor, who cites bipolar disorder in a bid to explain her seamy actions.

The temptress teacher - who once seductively posed in a leather bikini and white high heels alongside a motorcycle - was married just three months when her torrid affair with the young teen began at Greco Middle School in the Tampa suburb of Temple Terrace in June 2004.

The young reading student has said he and LaFave started their relationship after she began cooing to him that "she had feelings" for him and "didn't know what to do with them."

The pair first shared a steamy sex tryst on a Monday, after LaFave asked him to help her clean out her classroom-trailer.

The boy said that as he sat on the couch, LaFave suddenly appeared in sexy, black, terry-cloth shorts and a thong and asked him if he wanted to have sex.

She wound up performing oral sex on him.

The panting pair had four more wild sex sessions over the next three days: once in the townhouse she shared with her unsuspecting husband, Owen, and three times in the back seat of her SUV.

Their last romp occurred that June 17, after the teen and LaFave drove halfway across the state to Ocala, where his 15-year-old cousin lived. At the time, "my cousin drove us around again and again [and] we had sex" in the back seat, the boy said in a police statement.

LaFave was busted after her young lover's aunt spotted the pair in Ocala and told his mom. LaFave eventually pleaded guilty to lewd and lascivious behavior in the explosive case.

But she managed to dodge prison time after her lawyer told the judge that putting his comely client behind bars would be like "putting a raw piece of meat in with the lions."

When questioned about how she thinks the boy will turn out in the long run, LaFave admits to Lauer: "I think he's going to have a hard time trusting women one day. I'm sure he has to be living with the guilt of quote-unquote ratting me out."

LaFave is still under house arrest for her crime and, considering her sex-offender status, had to be granted a special waiver to meet Lauer at the posh Westin Harbour Hotel for part of the interview.

LaFave - engaged to hunky high-school sweetheart Andrew Beck - insists to Lauer that she should have the freedom because "I committed a sex offense - but I'm not a sex offender."

"I made a really, really, really bad choice," she says.

At one point, Lauer asks LaFave why she thinks her case grabbed international headlines.

"Do you think it's because you're pretty?" he says.

"I think so. And sex sells," LaFave replies.

One of the jobs that 32-year-old Amy Burke held at a New Jersey middle school was sex-ed teacher - but she apparently took that job a little too literally with a 13-year-old male student.

The married mom was ordered held on $300,000 bail yesterday on charges of aggravated sexual assault and endangering the welfare of a child for allegedly carrying on a torrid summer affair with the youngster, who is now in high school.

The two met at William C. McGinnis Middle School in Perth Amboy, where Burke is a gym and health teacher - responsible for sex education - and also the coach of the school's cheerleading squad.

Not everyone was as shocked. Burke's father, Michael Haskins, seemed to think that the charges were par for the course for his out-of-control daughter.

"She's a good girl, but she does her own thing," he told the paper after she was arrested on Wednesday. "She ran with the wrong crowd in high school." (Sounds like she still is)

Yesterday, he refused to expand on his comments outside the Carteret, N.J., home where he lives with his daughter, and she lives with her husband and child.

A law enforcement source said that the alleged molestation came to light after the victim told a friend and the friend told his parents, who then went to cops. Authorities also said Burke then made statements admitting to the crimes.

The contact allegedly occurred in March and lasted through the summer. There is no indication the sex happened at school.

Prosecutors charged her with committing the acts in 2004 with seven students, both boys and girls between the ages of 11 and 15, while supervising them in a classroom during their teacher's lunch period. At least some of the children had mental disabilities, authorities said.

White has been jailed since her arrest in April 2005.

St. Joseph Superior Court Judge Roland W. Chamblee Jr. said he could not order a longer sentence because White had no previous criminal troubles.

A judge went beyond the recommended sentence and ordered 90 days in jail Wednesday for a former sign-language teacher who had sex with a 16-year-old student.

"I abhor what you have done here," 3rd District Judge Stephen Roth told Melinda Lee DeLuca, 30.

In an agreement with prosecutors, DeLuca last year pleaded guilty to attempted forcible sexual abuse, a third-degree felony.

DeLuca had sex with the boy while she was a teacher at Copper Hills High School in the Jordan School District. She was fired in December 2005.

Although not offering an excuse, defense attorney Earl Xaiz said DeLuca had been taking an anti-seizure medication that can change behavior.

Sex appeal has become a hot selling point, just as important as teaching ability and knowledge, in Hong Kong's hypercompetitive world of cram schools — or "bou zap se" in the local Cantonese dialect.

Attractive teachers are marketed like movie stars. Their schools show them off on billboards, full-page newspaper ads and TV screens in railway stations and on buses.

Some tutors have their own teams of stylists, fashion designers and photographers, Ng said. They also have personal Web sites, where potential students can see their photos, read their online journals and download video clips of "gag moments" in class.

Percy Kwok, a former education researcher of the Chinese University of Hong Kong who studied the private tutoring phenomenon in 2003, said tutorial centers closely follow the consumption culture of youths to catch their attention.

"They may even expose tutors' private life if necessary," he said.

But he added that while tutorial centers have become highly commercial, they provide useful techniques in tackling exams, such as predicting question types. Daytime teachers don't have comparable resources or the time to do that, he said.

Tutorial centers will continue, he said, "As long as university certificates and exam results are the best evidence to prove one's competence and guarantee a stable income."

Former Ware Shoals High School coach Jill Moore, 28, took cheerleaders to a motel, where they met guardsmen for sex, according to Greenwood County sheriff's reports released late Thursday.

Moore, a married mother of two, also is accused of having sex with a male student on a different occasion

A former Brighton Charter High School teacher accused of having sexual contact with a student faces arrest after prosecutors allege she contacted the victim.

Carrie McCandless's attorney, M. Trent Trani, told The Denver Post Monday that his client never contacted the victim.

McCandless, 30, is charged with sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. McCandless has been free on $20,000 bail, but an arrest warrant was issued after prosecutors on Thursday filed a motion alleging the former teacher contacted the victim two days after both attended a court hearing Jan. 22.

small South Carolina town was rocked by accusations Wednesday that a 23-year-old middle school teacher used her classroom — and other locations — to have sex with at least five male students.

Police arrested Allenna Williams Ward after school officials recovered a note containing inappropriate messages, said Clinton Public Safety Director John Thomas.

Ward, who is married, allegedly had sexual encounters with the 14- and 15-year-old boys at various locations, including in the school, a motel, a park and behind a restaurant, from December to through February, according to arrest warrants.

Ward was placed on administrative leave with pay last Thursday, acting district Superintendent Laura Koskela said.

They would meet clandestinely inside school vans. He was a 13-year-old eighth-grader, she was the school's headmistress about to offer a disturbing lesson in lust.

"She told me not to tell anyone," the victim, now a 24-year-old NYPD cop, testified in Manhattan Supreme Court, as he recalled the first time Lina Sinha planted a kiss on him. "She told me she could get in trouble."

Sinha, 40, is accused of having a near-decade-long sexual relationship with her former student at an upper East Side Montessori school. She is also charged with later putting the moves on a 12-year-old boy.

The schoolhouse stunner - whose family runs Montessori schools in Manhattan, Queens and Brooklyn - allegedly took special interest in the boys before crossing the line.

"Just after his 15th birthday, she says she's going to give him a birthday present," prosecutor Rachel Hochauser told the jury in her opening statement.

That, prosecutors contend, turned out to be a sex romp at the Brooklyn Montessori school.

The steamy relationship allegedly extended through the boy's high school years and as he entered college and the Police Academy.

"She wooed them both," Hochauser said. "The objects of Lina Sinha's affection, lust and greed were children."

Defense lawyer Gerald Shargel blasted the district attorney's case as "pathetic" - and said the teacher never had sex with underage boys.

But Shargel acknowledged Sinha did have a sexual relationship with the cop after he was of legal age and while he was in the Police Academy.
