Who, other than INMM apparently, is the audience for this book?
The original series is 20 years old and anyone who really cares what sort of convoluted mess DC was in those days in buy the original series and scratch their heads over such now-obscure references as "Lady Quark," and "Psycho Pirate."

The problem is mostly the number of characters. It's much harder to juggle a large cast of characters in a novel than in a comic-book, because the visual cues are missing. I've attempted to read Tolstoy's War and Peace a few times but stopped when I kept losing track of the characters.
The only way I can see this actually working is if Wolfman picks a few important characters that are integral to the story, such as all the new characters he introduces: Monitor, Anti-Monitor, Harbinger, Pariah, Alexander Luthor, Lady Quark, etc, and really focuses on their characterizations. Scuttle all the excess bits of continuity that were in the original series and focus on the central story (which is at heart a retelling of the Gospels, with the Monitor as Messiah, his sacrifice enabling the world to triumph over the Devil, the Anti-Monitor). Leave in the tragic death of Supergirl and the self-sacrifice of the Flash, but don't even bother to describe any of the minor characters' deaths. Forget about all the bits of continuity relating to the various teams that DC had at the time -- the Legion, the JSA, the JLA, the Teen Titans, the Outsiders -- and focus on a few staple DC characters such as Superman. Cut down the number of Earths along with the huge cast of characters.
To try to make this a thorough retelling of Crisis is pointless -- an adaptation from one medium into another should always take artistic license, as the mediums do not translate equally in all ways with each other -- and if Wolfman attempts to be as thorough as possible he'll only be writing to an extremely limited audience of older superhero comic-book fans.

If you're interested in how it's possible that the book is told from Barry Allen's perspective, read the interview and find out, because you clearly didn't before saying that.
