Superman Dumped?! Quote:
February 28, 2005 - The Superman Homepage caught up with director Bryan Singer at this past weekend's Australian 2005 Tropfest Short-Film Festival and asked him about Superman, which begins filming in the next two weeks.
Singer revealed that all of the main roles have been cast save for a "female accomplice for Lex Luthor." (Might this have been the role that Famke Janssen was reportedly up for?) Singer also added that the story, which stays within the continuity established by the previous films, has Clark Kent/Superman absent from Metropolis from "between four and five years" but the director would not say how or why.
Singer also added that Brandon Routh's Clark Kent will be, like Christopher Reeve's, "playing the role of a bumbling fool." For more of what Singer has to say, click here.
Now please take the following with a huge grain of salt (one big enough to choke on) but a poster at Superhero Hype claims, via an acquaintance who allegedly knows people at Warner Brothers "public affairs," that the studio is poised to dump Brandon Routh in favor of Smallville star Tom Welling because "the WB is well aware of the fans disappointment in Routh."
The scooper also claims "that a HUGE board meeting is scheduled this week and even though Superman Returns starts 'production' in less than two weeks, that there is still a chance that Welling could be signed on as the star. ... Take this for what its worth everyone, something inside of me says that there is at least a 50% if not 60% chance that this is REAL news."
Needless to say, most of SHH's posters disbelieve the claimant. Early on during production of Singer's X-Men there was talk of dumping Hugh Jackman and recasting the part of Wolverine but Jackman ended up finding his character and stealing the movie.
Superman opens June 30, 2006.

If they are really going to do this, I will be very, very happy. Tom Welling should be Superman.

I totally disagree. Keep Tom on Smallville. He's too busy with that and a movie if I remember correctly. Casting an unknown for Superman in the movie is a great idea. And seriously, fans' disappointment? The movie hasn't begun shooting yet! He could end up being a great Superman. I have faith in Singer.

I'm not too excited about the Superman movie. Brondon Routh definitely has the looks, but I've been waiting four years to see Tom Welling in the costume. Sure, I'll still see the movie but I would rather have Welling in it.

There's an interview somewhere about why Singer wanted an unknown for Superman. Course I don't know where it is, probably at the SH somewhere.

Tom Welling is too young to play a Superman at least five years older than the one played by Christopher Reeves. I don't know how anyone can diss Brandon Routh if he's an unknown. I trust Singer's casting decisions (except Rogue, of course) and I hope they don't force him to use Welling. Even putting aside the age factor and the fact that making Welling put on a costume would kill the little magic left in that pathetic show, I believe the movie won't be as good as it could be if the director is forced to use an actor he doesn't want.

Yes, superman should be played by a 27 year old, 280 bald guy with no acting ability. BRILLIANT!

Tom has also expressed (many times I'm sure) that he does not WANT to play Superman. If WB forces him to do what he doesn't want to do, we won't have a happy director or a good movie. The fans want Tom? Tough. We've got Routh.

Welling is actually about a year or so older than Routh.
Anyway, Welling has repeatedly said he doesn't want to play Superman on the big screen. Plus, if Welling does do the movie, they'll probably cancel Smallville. The WB are kinda stupid that way.

I have a hard time dealing with internet fans bitching about Routh when I'm willing to bet hard money that most of them have never seen him act, and would have no understanding of what acting skill he may/may not possess. Singer would have a clear idea of what he wants, and has most likely been through a lengthy audition and selection process. Who's more qualified to cast the movie; the director, or some fat guy who likes Smallville and posts at Superhero Hype?
And Mxy: You have a problem with Anna Paquin?
Thing is- I can’t spell or type. I spell so badly my spell check doesn’t even know what I was trying to spell. And I have five Eisners HAHAHAHHA!!

I don't mind that Routh is an unknown actor with no hit films and only soap operas to his credit. that is exactly the resume that Chris Reeve had.
My problem with Routh is that he just looks...oily...in every pic of him I've seen.
