A sport involves...
1. Control of one's body and its movements, and hand-eye, foot-eye coordination
2. Non-ordinary expenditure of human energy (for it to be a sport, it must be possible for one to get tired while doing it)
3. Outcomes determined within the field of play (no judging to determine a winner)
4. Competition: A winner and a loser
5. Rules governing everyone's play and specific goals to be achieved within the competition.
So that means football, baseball, basketball, and hockey are obviously in there. But so are golf, motorsports, and bowlling. But chess isn't. Chess is clearly a competition, but it's not a sport. Walking is not a sport.
