Well, he looks capable of beating the snot out of Starscream. Or whatever the robot version of snot is.

    Transformers Details Revealed

SCI FI Wire got a rare peek at the production of director Michael Bay's upcoming Transformers movie in downtown Los Angeles on Aug. 26, including the first up-close look at the disguised versions of four key Autobots: the chartreuse search-and-rescue vehicle Ratchet, the giant black GMC 4x4 Ironhide, the sleek silver Pontiac Solstice sports car that is Jazz and the muscle-y yellow-and-black Chevy Camaro that is the new Bumblebee—so new that the car in the movie is a prototype for a vehicle that hasn't even gone into production yet. Ironhide had an Autobot logo on his tailgate; Ratchet featured a fire department seal on its doors with the same logo in the design.

In interviews with cast and crew, SCI FI Wire also got a preview of the film and learned a few key spoilers:

•The film will offer background about the origin of the war between the Autobots and Decepticons. The plot will be set in motion when 18-year-old Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf) discovers his grandfather's pair of century-old glasses, improbably laser-etched with a map and information about the location of a key artifact, the "Energon" cube, which he then tries to sell on eBay. The movie will follow five separate storylines, which will all converge with a final battle between the Autobots and Decepticons, starting at Hoover Dam and ending in an American city that looks a lot like Los Angeles.

•The film is seeking permission to be the first production to film the exterior of the Pentagon since the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001; the movie will also shoot in various cities, including L.A., Chicago, Detroit and Washington.

•The film will feature a top-secret military unit called Sector 7.

•Voice casting of the Transformer robots is being left until later in the production, except for Peter Cullen, who was previously named to reprise his role as Optimus Prime. In particular, producers wouldn't say whether Frank Welker, who voiced Megatron in the 1986 animated Transformers film, would voice the character in the movie.

•The movie will use a mix of computer animation and large-scale puppetry to depict the giant robots. Megatron will appear as a plane, not a giant gun, as he did in early versions of the franchise.

•The film's first full trailer will appear sometime during the holiday season this year.

Overall, director Bay told SCI FI Wire that the movie strives for realism, despite its cartoony origins. "I only wanted to do Transformers if I could do it realistic," Bay said in an interview. "And from what I've seen and what we've done with our digital studies, putting it in real-world stuff, that is lots of effects around that are real effects, that's how we make it realistic." When Bay got the first call from producer Steven Spielberg, he said, "My first thought was, 'Nah, I'm not interested.' And just because I thought, 'OK, how am I going to do a toy movie?' And then I realized, when I went to Hasbro, 'OK, start over and go for [a] realistic alien-invasion-robot movie on Earth.' And so, with that thinking in mind, that's how I went about it."

On a hot Saturday, Bay and his crew shot a scene on a blocked-off street in the heart of downtown L.A. The scene featured the four Autobots, accompanied by military crews led by co-stars Tyrese Gibson and Josh Duhamel, and young stars LaBeouf and Megan Fox, who plays Mikaela, LaBeouf's love interest. In the scene, the commandoes see what they believe to be Air Force jets flying overhead, then realize that the coming flying machines are something else—Decepticons in disguise?—and throw smoke grenades to obscure their positions as dozens of civilians run screaming around them. Ironhide, the black truck in the lead of the column of Autobots, appears to collide with a delivery truck carrying Furbys (the talking furry animal toys that are also made by Transformers maker Hasbro). The truck is on a gimbal, which allows it to swing up and stand perpendicular to the street, as if knocked on its end. The idea is that the Furbys will be knocked from the truck, in flames, then activate when the Energon cube flies overhead. "We just wanted to have burning Furbys on the ground, you know?" Bay said with a laugh. "We're going to be blowing up a lot of little Furbys." Transformers is currently in production, with an eye to a July 4, 2007, release.

That Michael Bay has an uncanny knack to know what the audience wants.

Still, I kind of bummed Ironhide's not a Ford.

...and Ratchet is a Hummer.

So (other than Prime) the Autobots consist of a Chevy Camaro (Bumblebee) a Pontiac Solstice (Jazz) a GMC truck (Ironhide) and a Hummer (Ratchet). Yep, that's product placement. Not only are they all GM products, each one is from a different line.

And YET-----....I'm right. Those inital designs look horrid. Will the movie be cool? Is Michael Bay involved? Nevermind. Anyway, I'll be giving it the benefit of the doubt....when I see it. But, those designs do not appeal to me.

i dunno, i kinda like'em. especially knowing its an early still for a design specced out to look good in motion. and knowing how 80sish and boxy the cartoon design'd look. and taking into consideration how techy and robotty cyborgs and such have to (and should) look in movies now

what were you looking for? in an ideal world?

LMFAO!!!!!

A point-one-upgrade!

Rob : Honestly, what I was looking for was something resembling the Transformers. You know me. You know I'm not about reliving the past, or wanking over nostalgia simply for its sake. However, I'm vehemently against movies that use a franchise name, and, in substance, bear little-to-no resemblance to the actual material. Catwoman is a good example of this. If you like the look, that's cool. It's just not appealing to my senses. And, as I stated before, once I see it in motion, I may change my mind...

i dunno. to me, thats what a realistic, modern day, cgi'd version of the cartoon would look like. he's a truck. he's all mechy. he's got a paint job that more appropriately suits a world not limited to two colors.

i liken it to not making the movie batman a guy in gray jammies with his blue blanket tied around his neck, like the comics force feed. they just plop it into a more modern, more "believable" movie-friendly world.

with those grains of salt in, i think the design is good.

Ill wank over nostolgia goddammit! So far I'm not feelin these designs. They should have used 20th anni Prime as a blueprint given by divine command. I'm still going to try to keep an open mind about what theyre doing though.

Not saying it's not realistic, and never said I didn't like that sort of thing. What I'm saying is that it doesn't look anything like Optimus Prime. Pretty much at all. Thus, why call it Transformers?

This reminded me of the time as a kid I threw a transformer at a kid who was picking on me and split his head open..... That Prime woulda been sweet to have that day.

Tell me something. Is this Robin?

What about these guys?

By your logic it is. All the basics are there, right? It looks about as realistic as its going to get for someone to dress up in a costume, right?

So, why isn't that Batman and Robin, then?

See, I got to side with Rob on this one. I mean, there's a reason why it's called 'retro'. Besides, the original artists were a little limited in what they could do. There's only so many ways you can make a human-like robot out of a Lamborghini.

Frankly, I care more about how they act rather than what they look like. As long as 3/5 of the movie is Starscream and Megatron bitching at each other, I'll be happy.

Also, I check out those Dreamwave comics, which did a great job of bringing the old-school robots into this decade. They basically 'tweaked' parts of the old TV show. Frankly, the comic did a better job with the Insecticons than the show ever did. I hated those stupid bugs.

well, its not a fair analogy.

those are ...weird... people. obviously an attempt to look ridiculous. it would change the whole theme of the movie. they had a batman movie with a fatter batman in the 60s, and it worked on a different, campy level.

similarly, i think a prime design in the simplistic, bright red and blue, and unexplanable tire disappearance in a realistic movie would be equally as unpossible!

the 5 most recent bat films each had variant suits in various levels of realism (damn you, schumacher!)

the more off-the-wall the movie was reflected upon the costume design

Yeah...there's realisism, and then there's 'Hollywood Realisism'. Or 'Walking with Dinosaurs' instead of 'Jurassic Park'.

I would like to change my previous statement. As long as 3/5 of the movie is Starscream and Megatron bitching at each other, and none of the robots have nipples, I will be happy.

It's not checkers, Kampstein....it's chess. Stop moving your pieces all over the board!

Listen, the examples I used are absurd on purpose. My point is, and was, you can only stray so far from an established concept before it ceases to be that concept by any substance or stretch. Throwing Keanu Reeves in all black, and calling him Constantine, does not a Hellblazer movie make.

Again, I am perfectly open to checking this movie out, and being thrilled with the updates. The originals were silly, in retrospect. However, there needs to be something of the definite article there for it to be the Transformers.

And, as for any realism, and all that, CGI can work all magics equally. If they wanted to go with actual Prime look, and have the wheels deflate and slide inside his ass everytime he transforms, then, it could be done very easily. My greatest fear is that they are going so realistic as to ignore the "fun" of it all.

We will see, though...

to which i hold my reply.

yes, those characters were batman and robin -- all of the basics were covered in their designs. if the film's theme held to their regard, i.e; silly.

in a realistic film (with however many quotes y'wanna use) y'need a realistic costume.

megatron? i'll grant you. the design, if it pans out, is really nothing like the original.

Have any of these pics been official? From what I know they are all concept pics and will most likely be changed. I don't think they are that bad (for the most part) but none of them have changed how I feel about this movie.
